We need more of these in the Lower Mainland

Too many chains in Vancouver. We need more independents who put out great food consistently.

I love coming here for breakfast/brunch. You can have your classic eggs/meat/potatoes or got a bit fancier.

The baguettes are fantasitic and perfectly flavoured. All the food is.

Only issue is if you're in a rush, I don't know if they can cater to that. They probably could use more help in the kitchen but that only adds to the cost, so come unrushed, relaxed and be ready for great food.

I did find the coffee a bit bland though, standard for North American I guess. Expected more as I find espresso's/cafes in france/europe much more flavourful.

Need to update to modern nutritional guidelines in terms of salt content
Submitted Friday, August 5, 2011 - 8:40am [Dine in]

You know, I realized I'm eating out less not because of money, HST, recession or whatever (cause I still spend a lot of money on food) but because too many places don't balance out the salt levels in their food. Da Mario I think puts out great looking food, good ingredients but the salt level has to come down.

The issue is mainly in the sauces and soups I think because if you get past that, there's a lot of pleasant flavours in the food. It reminds me of those people who get their food and immediately pours the salt on without even tasting it! It's not flavour, it's salt!

Otherwise we had veal which was cooked great, ravioli was a good portion but filling was pretty standard.

I want to come back cause I think it's a good little spot, good friendly service and good menu but only if they tone down the salt content or at least balance it out better.

El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant3853 Hastings Street, #A, Burnaby
blah location yet great food

it's one of those places where it just seems in the wrong spot and not very appealing to go into, however all these years I've been wrong. Finally went and will go again and again.

Flavours are well balanced and tasty. Doesn't make you feel gross like some Mexican restaurants. In fact you feel fresh and wanting to try other items on the menu.

Too many places explain it's the type of cuisine for the reason of overly seasoned or spiced food. El Mariachi proves you don't have to stick with traditional to have light fresh and authentic flavours.

don't come here expecting cheap eats but good food at fair prices.

Kind of like a good chinese restaurant minus the chinese food.

First review, the rating system here is not perfect. This place not quite what I expected from the previous reviews.

Anyways, it serves me right to think that an authentic tuscan italian restaurant exists in Richmond! The previous reviews are a bit over the top for the place it really is. Need to get a real rating in here.

Where it's good:
Food was good and for the most part well flavoured and well cooked (Only real knock was that medium rare steaks at our table were quite rare)
Portions are fair for the price. Pasta's range from $11-$17, meat dishes hit $27... normal pricing for the type of food.
You can get a decent meal here.

Where it fails:
Ambiance - Completely lacking in any Italian feel, nevermind tuscany. Decor is pretty plain jane.
Wine - ok selection, improper storage. Our bottle of Chianti PIscilli 06 was quite warm. Was explained to me that the lights are what made it warm. Well........
Servers aren't experienced in this kind of dining.
Menu didn't have an italian/tuscany feel to it as it was simply a selection of pasta and meats. You have to have a some kind of special type of pizza! They did have a tuscany soup but no one was interested in trying that.

So first impressions didn't set me off right. The food was good. I won't call it outstanding but with this rating system, I don't want to give them a 3 either. I was going in expecting a fine dining night. It's not a fine dining restaurant. Overall a solid experience, but not the incredible ratings that are being given so far. Kind of like a good chinese restaurant minus the chinese food.
