WOW! Their sandwiches sure are popular...
Submitted Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 7:46pm [Dine in]

Food: Not much selection for pho, but it seems most ppl are interested in their sandwiches! I swear when i was there, every table had atleast 1 sandwich and they were constantly taking orders over the phone! I have to agree that the sandwiches are tastier than most places. The pho was average.

Service: Cant expect much from this small cafe. Easy enough to get someone's attention. Nothing that stood out.

Ambiance: Busy. Busy. Busy. Dont be surprised if you have to wait. Dont be surprised if you sit really close to the next table.

Overall: Def worth returning.

Thank Goodness For The Food
Submitted Monday, February 5, 2007 - 12:17am [Dine in]

Food: had the Californnia and BC Roll Combo, edamame, and gyoza. everything tasted great. the sushi pieces were larger than average places and very fresh and tasty. edamame was not over salted as some places are.

Service: horrible...but that was to be expected after reading many of the reviews. as soon as we got in we went straight to the cashier to put our names down...i got that tip fr one of the reviewers! Thanks! b/c if we didnt do that, for sure none of the servers wouldve paid any attention to us or cared! our server forgot our miso soup...that stuff is premade! u just have to pour it into a bowl and bring it out! the servers are just very "blah". the dont look or act like they want to be there at all.

Ambiance: busy busy busy. small and cramped.

Overall: if it werent for the food, we wouldnt go back...and even when we do, i think we'd avoid the peak hours...the lack of service during the entire experience may stress me out too much to enjoy the food.

Are You A Sports Bar?
Submitted Monday, February 5, 2007 - 12:09am [Dine in]

Food: instead of trying the tapas i went for the set menu. $25 for crab salad, steak w/ teriyaki sauce, dessert. the crab salad was good...i was expecting artificial crab but it was real soft shelled crab. steak was cooked perfectly (they even sliced it into bite size pieces!). the presentation was terrific. by the time i got to dessert, i was already pretty full. it was some sort of chocolate mouse cake or something...

Service: when we arrived through the doors, the hostess thought we were w/ some girls in front of us so left us standing there. we had to flag down someone else to seat us. the waitresses were very nice for the most part...but there must have been some sort of miscommunication somewhere b/c we were asked if we wanted our dessert 2X and then had to follow up another 2X!!

Ambiance: kind of hard to describe what kind of statement this place is trying to make. it's not quite a hapa izakaya or guu feel, not quite fine dining, not a full sports bar...i cant make up my mind!

Overall: i dont think i'd come back for dinner, but maybe for drinks to watch a game (there is a big screen TV). a pint is only ~$3.33 and wings ~$7.77.

Nothing Special...Typical
Submitted Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:56pm [Dine in]

Food: offers typical HK cafe menu. had the baked pork chop w/ fried rice...instead of the usual casserole dish it normally comes in, it came on a dish. i thought it was wierd. i didnt like how my slab of pork was kind of fatty.

Service: efficient. wasnt horrible...wasnt outstanding.

Ambiance: busy.

Overall: if i have a craving for HK style food and dont feel like driving to Rmd then this place would satify that craving.

Dont Eat At This Location!!
Submitted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 12:34am [Dine in]

Food: salt and pepper wings were pretty good. lone star bbq chicken salad says mixed greens but i just had head lettuce in mine! i felt deceived! they also forgot to give me my banana bread which i usually just love, but this time it seemed as if the banana bread wasnt even baked all the way through! in the middle it was still gooey. yuck! my b/f had the penne carbonara...and he found hair in it!! we had it returned to the kitchen and got a new one...and then there was another hair!! and i'll tell you, it definately was not his!!

Service: there was no hostess when we got there. i think an employee that just got off work wearing street clothes just decided to seat us b/c no one was around. our server needed lessons on just about everything. we had to ask for our waters to be refilled and she filled 1 glass but not the other. we had to practically beg for an apology when we found hair in the pastas...twice! after happening 2 times you would also expect the mgr to come out to make a personal apology which didnt happen. mgr must have been aware though b/c he had to override the dish being removed from our bill. server didnt even realized i didnt get banana bread and when asked, she said "i think it comes w/ it". she never apologized when she did bring it out either.

Ambiance: Nice decor and washroom...sorry, the rest of the night really put a damper on the evening

We've come to this particular location before and been disappointed by the service, but we thought it was just the one server...perhaps it's just the training, lack of training, or management that needs much work. In the meantime we will NOT be returning nor will we ever recommend this location in the future.

Dine Out - Average Experience
Submitted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 12:11am [Dine in]

Dine Out Experience

Food: The 5 spice spring rolls was pretty good. It was diff't and had a bite of a kick to it. My b/f thought the toast that came w/ the ahi tuna dominated the taste a bit too much...but that might have been b/c the tuna was pretty small. I had the pasta which i thought tasted fairly good and my b/f enjoyed his fillet which was cooked perfectly. The creme brulee was very light and we didnt find it too sweet unlike some of the previous reviewers. The cheesecake was good...the texture was very diff't...very light and creamy in my mouth...almost as if it wasnt even cheesecake!

Service: Our server seemed very indifferent. You would think that since this is Dine Out and it's their chance to gain new customers that would try harder but apparently not. However, i did notice that the other 2 servers did appear to be more "friendly".

Ambiance: Diffinately a lounge feel to it. At times it seemed as if the music was a bit too loud. Had to strain to hear and raise my voice to to be heard. It was very busy and I could see that some had to eat at the bar...which i think is strange..."fine dining" on bar stools...

Overall: The main intrigue about this restaurant is that every dish has alcohol in it, but to be honest, you cant really taste it at all. The food overall was pretty good, but i dont think the complete dining experience really made a strong impression or convinced me to return. I believe there are many better options for food and service in Vancouver.

Good First Experience
Submitted Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 5:08am [Dine in]

Went to Saltlik for the first time tonight. I had made reservations as i didnt know what the volume would be like. We got a great seat upstairs w/ a view of the entire layout of the restaurant.

Food: We started off w/ the dry ribs which werent quite dry b/c they had a glaze on them, but boy were they good! Each piece was very lean and tasty! I had the Butcher's Cut Prime Rib ~$27 and my b/f the California Cut New York w/ peppercorn sauce (10 oz) ~$28 and both cooked exactly the way we asked.

Service: From the moment we stepped into the restaurant we received fantastic service. Our server was attentive, polite, friendly, warm, fantastic to say the least! Normally I get overwhelmed by too much attention, but she was excellent at keeping it lite yet sincere.

Ambiance: The decor was nice and modern...what I would expect at a downtown steakhouse. We had huge comfy seats, nice mix of music, not too loud so we could still have a conversation.

Overall: I would def return and recommend others to give it a try. I wanted to try the desserts but was just too full...maybe next time!

It's Ok...
Submitted Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 11:59pm [Dine in]

Food:i had the small #10. decent size for a small. tendons, tripe, brisket was good, but there was this fatty flank which i didnt enjoy too much. i think next time i just wont have the fatty flank. had the pork/shrimp salad roll which was kinda bland had it not been for the peanut sauce.

Service: typical. nothing extremely bad nor outstanding.

Ambiance: decor is a little strange b/c it use to be a greek restaurant i think but doesnt bother me.

Overall: the pho was pretty good except for my choice of the fatty flank. i'd come back for the pho should i be in the mood.

Worst Service Ever
Submitted Saturday, July 22, 2006 - 3:41pm [Dine in]

Food: had the hedgehog cake. was expecting something that was very chocolatey but it was actually very light. the layers of icing/cream and the cake itself fell apart w/ every fork. i dont think that's suppose to happen. almost seemed as if this cake i was having had been on the shelf for a day or two...not fresh. this cake as paired w/ the apple/cinnamon fusion tea which was good. my b/f had the lime/raspberry flan w/ the verbana mint tea. flan good, tea too strong! dont do this pairing!

Service: horrible, horrible, horrible. they're too busy or too inept to notice when new ppl seat themselves so they never know to come service you. had to go up to counter to ask for menus. had to go up to counter to tell them we were ready to order b/c they cant take our order at the counter! and even after telling them we were ready to order we still had to wait another 7min+ for someone to actually come to our table! they gave us 2 cookies as compensation but i'd rather have adequate service than 2 measy cookies.

Ambiance: nothing special. cafe type setting.

Overall: Service really ruined it. No matter the quality of the dessert the service experience was so horrible we wont come back again b/c it put us in a bad mood for the rest of the night.

Submitted Sunday, June 25, 2006 - 12:16am [Dine in]

Food: beef wrapped in grn onion cake which i thought was pretty good. i didnt think that it was too doughy at all unlike the last reviewer. shanghai dumplings were ok. nothing special...i usually like it when there's a bit of "soup" after you bite into it, but their dumplings dont have that. pan fried rice noodle w/ beef kinda tasted funky...couldnt put my finger on it...but the beef was nice and tender. szechuan pork w/ spinach was very tasty. the pork was very soft and not that fatty...almost tasted like beef brisket!

Service: had to wait 20min on a sat nite for 2 which is actually not too bad for this restaurant. although the pork dish was fine, it really wasnt what we ordered, but it's ok. miscommunication i guess...not all the servers are very competent in english and my canto wasnt good enough to describe what i was really asking for.

Ambiance: nice modern looking decor. clean and strong AC!! good for small groups but can also accomodate large groups w/ some of their tables.

Overall: i've eaten here before and have always thought the food was pretty good. sitting there looking around at some of the other dishes on other ppl's tables makes me want to try them next time! some of them look very yummy!

Get Rid of Battered Tempura Chicken!!
Submitted Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 1:07am [Dine in]

Food: i had the club salad which was a good entree size. dressing was a little heavy for my liking. next time i would ask for it on the side. came w/ tempura battered chicken which i didnt like at all. way over battered little 3 strips of chicken. wouldve tasted better w/ grilled chicken. came w/ banana bread which was still warm and very tasty. shared the blackberry/apple puff pastry which is very comparible to joey tomatos. made to order so was fresh and yummy!

Service: our server was fairly attentive. didnt have to wait too long to order, mains came at reasonable time, glasses never went empty...our dessert did take a while, but our server was very apologetic and compt it for us! we didnt even mention anything and didnt think it was necessary, but i guess there was a mixup/miscommunication in the kitchen regarding the order.

Ambiance: cool place for drinks, hangout, casual dining. bar is great to catch some games. i'd def come back...as long as i dont have to wait too long! can get fairly busy evenings and weekends!

Worth the $$$?
Submitted Saturday, June 24, 2006 - 12:46am [Dine in]

According to my dad, there is a restaurant w/ the same name in China that is very famous for it's good eats, hence, the prompt to give this place a try.

Food: tried a variety of dishes all were quite tasty. med hot/sour soup was kinda expensive for what i thought was mid class type of restaurant ($17) but it was good. in general all the dishes were a couple more dollars than the typical chinese family restaurant but i didnt mind for better quality food.

Service: started off kind of rocky but improved after we ordered. they were very busy when we first arrived but then settled down. the servers were very polite...kinda diff't fr some other chinese restaurants!

Ambiance: very typical...loud chatter amongst tables. clean interior. a little small. horrible parking. you'll prob end up having to park on the street or around the corner of the gas station.

Overall: i wouldnt mind taking my 'rents back again and i dont even mind the slightly inflated prices, but my 'rents being old fashioned prob wouldn't want to go back...the typical, "many other restaurants w/ great food for much cheaper!" line...oh well, i tried!

Submitted Friday, June 9, 2006 - 3:51pm [Dine in]

Last time i came here was over 5yrs ago! i remember it being pretty good but it's just kinda out of my way i guess...until this week.

Food: tapas style so be sure to order more! the dishes are small and meant for sharing. everything was good! beef tataki, chives & pork gyoza, beef short ribs, oyako don, beef yakisoba, stuff mushrooms, deepfried chicken...some of the dishes are so simple and basic yet they were able to add a unique flavour to it! presentation was good too.

Service: nothing bad...nothing outstanding either. went on a tues nite so wasnt too busy. sat at the bar first then was seated at a reg table so it would be easier to share.

Ambiance: nice quaint little place. totally casual hangout spot. feel free to go w/ good friends for a couple of drinks, good food, and good conversation.

Great View!
Submitted Tuesday, May 30, 2006 - 9:37pm [Dine in]

Food: the comp sourdough bread came out slightly warm which was nice. my friends shared the roasted chicken & curried chickpea soft taco and tandoori chicken & butter lettuce salad. the girls that had the chicken didnt finish it and altho they said it was good the fact that they left it half untouched makes me wonder. the salad however was completely devoured except for the huge slab of brie which was had to be paired w/ the comp bread. i had the roast prosciutto wrapped chicken breast which i thought was absolutely perfect! i substituted the roast potatoes for garlic mash which wasnt an issue. for dessert everyone gave thumbs up for the truffle and fudge cake, trio of sorbet, and little brownie mountain. the truffle and fudge cake come w/ 2 slices so you would def be able to share b/w 2 ppl as is w/ the little brownie mtn. the trio sorbet altho very refreshing was a bit expensive for such a small slab in my opinion.

Service: Our waiter was polite and knowledgeable. i was impressed w/ the way she handled another customer that was being rude and waving her down while she was talking to us! damn tourists!! she acknowledged him and asked him to wait while she finished w/ our orders first even though he was obviously impatient but couldnt he see she was busy w/ us?!! so rude of him! our glasses never emptied. food took a bit long but we did go at a busy hour and we were a larger group of 6ppl.

Ambiance: it is clean, classy, and the view is just amazing!! when u make reservations see if u can request a window seat or if it's nice sit outside to enjoy the fresh air!!

Overall: Def a place to take a date or to go for a classier type dinner. i can't afford to come here often but i'd def recommend it for those special occasions. now, my g/f said she got food poisoning fr the salmon she ate the next day so u might want to steer clear of that, but she did say it was good at dinner! i didnt eat the salmon so i still think the food was great! ha!

Reliable Lunch
Submitted Friday, May 26, 2006 - 12:05pm [Dine in]

never been here for dinner yet but lunch has always been consistent.

Food: usually have some sort of congee or noodle. my fav is chicken w/ mushroom congee. i like how the tea here kinda taste like lychee or something. no complaints about the food so far fr all the diff't occasions i've been here.

Service: the have a lot of regulars so know a lot of ppl by name. food has always come out at a reasonable time. take out is fairly quick too. try to make reservations around lunch or dinner time b/c they do get quite busy.

Ambiance: its a family oriented restaurant so it's always quite lively. they made some improvements on the interior so its fairly nice for a chinese restaurant.

Overall: i havent been disappointed yet for lunch so this is always a place i'd be willing to go to for lunch. after reading some of the other reviews i think i'll have to come by to try dinner some time too!

Cheap Eats!
Submitted Sunday, May 21, 2006 - 2:49pm [Dine in]

Food: i had the small beef sukiyaki $3.50 (which came w/ miso soup) and california roll $2.95. for those prices i was satisfied! they've got lots of little donburi and sushi combos.

Service: they mostly do take out but u can sit and eat if there's rm available in their limited seating area. u basically order at the front counter, sit down, and they bring the food to you. the tea is self serve and altho they dont ask you to put ur dishes away most ppl do...

Ambiance: dont expect much. it's small and can get hot in there. there's polaroids of all the dishes and special menu items posted on the walls. u eat, then get out!

Overall: great place to eat for quick and cheap jap food on robson. also, if you work reg on robson this is a nice alternative to McD's, breadgarden, steamrollers, or starbucks.

Submitted Sunday, May 21, 2006 - 10:09am [Dine in]

Food: honey garlic spareribs were fairly good. some places it seems like it's all batter or fat but no one at our had any complaints here including myself. i really enjoyed the pork w/ the spicy jalopenos & rock salt...it was actually spicy! fried rice w/ the the fish was popular at our table too. everything else was fairly average.

Service: like any other typical chinese restaurant not much service...but no complaints either.

Ambiance: nothing special. kinda small for a family restaurant that has large tables to seat 8+. there's a flat screen TV above the bar that plays old school karaoke videos which i found kind of amusing.

Overall: i may consider coming back during lunch to try out their lunch menu. i thought this place was alright but my parents didn't think that it was that great of value...they had just as good quality or better for cheaper elsewhere so they wont be coming back. There are just so many other great chinese restaurants in Vancouver to try!!

Not Just Bubble Tea!
Submitted Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - 7:59pm [Dine in]

Been to a couple of the Bubble Worlds but never tried this one out in Surrey before nor have i ever tried any of the eats.

Food: had the deep fried chicken leg lunch combo that came w/ a bbtea drink, meatless springroll, chilled veggie bowl, n fruit. very good deal for the price. in my opinion there was a bit too much batter, but that's easy to fix.

Service: basic give you your menus, take your order, serve your food, give you bill, and clean off table. it's a bbtea house, what do u expect?!

Ambiance: ok for lunch i guess. kinda wierd to see an "older" crowd at a bbtea house tho. this girl seated at a table infront of me took off her shoes and had her feet on the seat. they should've said something about that. didn't realize that it was necessary in any venue to require putting up "keep your stinking shoes on" signs. def disturbing, but atleast i was finished eating and about to lv...

Overall: every bubble world i go to is fairly good. it's a little out of my ways but if i'm in the neighborhood and have a craving i'd come by again for food or drinks.

Mother's Day Dinner
Submitted Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - 7:21pm [Dine in]

Came here for mother's day dinner w/ a party of 4. We come here occasionally but haven't for a while so this was a nice change.

Food: had the combo w/ 3 dishes, rice, comp quail and soup. really enjoyed this one dish w/ shredded chicken, crispy wonton shell shavings, jellyfish, and sesame seeds. very tasty! everything else was alright...it was the chicken dish that kept calling my name all nite tho.

Service: fairly fast and efficient, nothing more, nor did we expect anything more from a chinese family style restaurant.

Ambiance: nothing special. family oriented so it's loud and crying children are to be expected. considering it was mother's day i was expecting it to be packed and was even afraid we werent going to be able to make reservations, but at any given time during peak hours it was only 50%-75% full.

Overall: i'll come back for a family style dinner. there was 1 round table that was seating 13ppl!! and i'll be sure to order the chicken again!

Tummy Hungry...
Submitted Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - 6:24pm [Dine in]

We were planning a girls night out of dinner, drinks, and dancing. This place had been burnt down and had just recently reopened again. My g/f lives nearby and had always wanted to check it out so we took this opportunity to try it out.

Food: everything here is small tapas portion. wasn't what i was expecting considering i was very hungry and sick so didn't want to share my germs w/ anyone. i ordered the stuffed chicken which was pretty good but portions def left my tummy unsatisfied.

Service: we were a party of 8 and it took over 1hr to get our food. 1 of the girls even ordered a salad! in my opinion that's too long. if it hadnt been for the drinks and company i think we would have been a lot more cranky. the server was nice, but forgot to add 3 of our drinks on the tab. we mentioned it to her tho b/c we believe in karma! perhaps they're still reworking out the kinks since reopening??

Ambiance: cool spot to hang out w/ a couple of drinks and good company. we took up all but approx 3 of the reg tables/chairs, the rest were all bar tables and stools. there was someone in the corner playing the piano and when we left there was a band just about to set up. this spot is small tho so i wouldn't suggest going there if your party is larger than 4. anymore i would recommend reservations.

Overall: not a place for a party larger than 4. not a place for dinner. not a place for romancing. under the right circumstances tho this place could be perfect for you and exactly what your looking for.
