Push Cart Dimsum! Yum Yum!
Submitted Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 10:00pm [Dine in]

Food: all the traditional dimsum dishes are offered via push cart. no dish really stood out as "exceptional"...more average than anything. would like to try this unique dish that's deep fried chicken wing stuffed w/ sticky rice. glutinous balls w/ red bean inside was good. egg tart a little too "flaky" for our liking. the lotus leaf fried rice is a favourite of ours as is the hot ginger milk.

Service: not bad for a dimsum joint. it's usually staffed appropriately. the boss lady is around and about greeting her regulars and is quite friendly.

Ambiance: busy, noisy, loud...the way we like it! fairly clean too.

Overall: wouldnt mind returning to try other dishes. if i had a dimsum craving this place would satisfy it.

Cold Buffet
Submitted Thursday, November 29, 2007 - 1:17am [Dine in]

Food: buffet only ran to 9:30pm and we got there just after 9pm and everything at the buffet table seemed cold and old under the lamp, but i guess it's to be expected considering the hour. not that much selection available which was a disappointment.

Service: there were too many functions going on and understaffed. thank goodness we were doing buffet so didnt require much service.

Ambiance: busy. been here 2X and both times there were functions going on here. i guess it's a popular place for bday parties. needless to say it's loud and busy. nothing special about decor.

Overall: we left full but convinced there must be something better out there.

Good Value for AYCE
Submitted Thursday, November 29, 2007 - 12:52am [Dine in]

Food: $21 for week nite dinner. quite an extensive menu for AYCE. had quite a few things we dont normally see elsewhere for AYCE (ex. unagi rice). didnt see anything on menu limiting sashimi which is always a plus. food is quite average which is to be expected at AYCE and i think when ppl are evaluating restaurants this should be kept in mind. i would avoid the beef tataki (too thick), tuna tataki (mushy) and beef ribs (fatty). items we enjoyed were bbq blk cod, salmon & tako sashimi (fresh), chicken karage (juicy), red bean spring roll.

Service: standard. sashimi took a while to come out since there was only 1 sushi chef on a wed nite.

Ambiance: wasnt that busy on wed nite which was good. not too loud and plenty of servers. music was a nice classic mix. there are rooms available if you want privacy or for larger groups.

Overall: def will return for AYCE fix.

Dumpling Galore!
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 12:40am [Dine in]

Food: noodle soup w/ beef tendon was a bit pricey ($7.95) but it's a fairly large bowl and there was lots of tendon! def worth the price. plus the soup was fairly light, no msg. it came w/ a free order of potstickers, not sure if that's just a dinner thing. steamed dumplings were yummy! they were perfect juicy bite size and the skin was so thin! the beef pancake wrap was ok, i have had better. my b/f loves the longan & glutenous rice sweet soup. it's got longan, lotus seed, blk jasmine rice, and i cant remember what else, but it's not too sweet which is perfect.

Service: u beckon, they come. nothing special. your order is printed out and taped to your table and each item is checked off. this way you know what u ordered and what is left to come. our desserts came a little slow, but our other dishes came fairly quickly.

Ambiance: clean and simple. furniture looks a little cheap, however, i do like the big windows and open kitchen decor. i have heard this place can get pretty busy during peak times, but we went on a wed nite and there was no wait.

Overall: i would def return to try out other items on their menu.

Late Nite AYCE
Submitted Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 3:25pm [Dine in]

Food: we were there on a friday to try their $13 late nite AYCE. food came out super fast...i guess since they had pre-made a lot of the food earlier like the rolls and cones. hot foods still came out quite warm. nothing to complain or rave about. standard chinese jap food. i would have to say tho their AYCE quality is still better than Rmd Sushi.

Service: all about efficiency. dont expect anything more and you wont be disappointed. surprisingly there was no wait, but they do take reservations.

Ambiance: nothing special. good place to grab some food w/ friends. it's noisy fr all the ppl. cleanliness is decent...but i try not to look to too hard!

Overall: i'd do the late nite AYCE here again. for $13 u can't go wrong! it's like ordering an entree at most places nowadays.

Cant Go Wrong!
Submitted Wednesday, November 14, 2007 - 11:55pm [Dine in]

Food: HK cafe style food. large menu to choose from at a great price point. i like my baked porkchop on rice...it's actually on fried rice. most places have it just on plain rice or rice w/ a few peas. portions are satisfying for the price.

Service: they take your order, bring your food, refill your tea when you ask, and bring your bill when beckoned. nothing extraordinary.

Ambiance: it's busy and loud and i dont care! what do you expect?!

Overall: i come here every few wks depending on the wait. it's been fairly consistent every time and have yet to have any complaints.

Wow! Service At A Chinese Restaurant!
Submitted Wednesday, November 14, 2007 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

Food: ordered from the combo menu. had 3 dishes for $35 which includes rice, soup, 1/2 free range chicken, and dessert. we had the seafood w/ tofu, porkchop w/ orange sauce, and gailan w/ beef. gailan was ok...some pcs tasted a little bitter. i liked the porkchop dish... most of the pcs were not that fatty. not that much seafood in the tofu dish...was like the sauce for fookien fried rice ontop of tofu and broccoli. soup had better ingredients than most restaurants. the dessert was the lotus seed sweet soup which is way better than the usual red bean soup. all in all, we were satisfied w/ the food.

Service: we thought it took a bit longer than expected for food to come out since it wasnt that busy, but when the food came, everything did come at once. it was a wed nite afterall so maybe the kitchen wasnt fully staffed. i dont know if he was the owner/mgr, but he came by frequently to pour tea, ask us if we had enough to eat, introduced each dish that came, scooped our soup for us... much better service than most chinese restaurants.

Ambiance: cafe type setting. it's tidy and simple. somewhere to go for a casual meal.

Overall: i would go back to try some other items on menu. they have cafe food which i would like to give a try.

Good Dimsum!
Submitted Monday, November 12, 2007 - 9:05pm [Dine in]

Food: Dimsum variety is pretty good. they have a good selection and some unique dishes. it is a little bit pricier but worth the quality.

Service: Lots of servers around. not that personable but efficient...which is all u can ask for.

Ambiance: busy. interior decorating is considered quite nice compared to most chinese restaurants. great place to get together with friends or family for dimsum.

Overall: def return for dimsum again...but maybe only for a "special" occasion b/c of the $$ factor. u can park in the parkade and kirin will reimburse you $1.

I'm Still Eatting! Calm Down!
Submitted Saturday, November 10, 2007 - 2:19pm [Dine in]

Food: my b/f and i shared the chicken pesto penne and blackened bbq chicken pizza. pizza was on a thin crust which was nice but a bit too much bbq sauce for my liking...had to scrap some off. pasta came w/ 2 wedges of garlic bread and both were pretty good.

Service: for some reason we had 2 waitress serving our table...may be one was to make up for the other which did not seem genuine or on the ball. i think the owner was seated next to our table b/c they kept checking up on us too much after he was seated...we were asked 5X if we wanted to pack up our pasta!! 2X by each waitress then the owner had to say to the waitress not to pressure us to leave...then the mgr asked us if we wanted to pack our pasta! OMG! there's no one waiting for a table and we've only been there 30min!

Ambiance: were there during game nite so ambiance was great. they had lots of TVs in the lounge area for everyone no enjoy the game. great casual place...too bad about the guy next to us that had this dirty feet on up on the stool and menu...some ppl have no class.

Overall: still a good alternative for casual dining it ur bored of cactus club, earls, red robins, and the like.

Give it a Try!
Submitted Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 11:39pm [Dine in]

Food: All you can eat for just under $14. You have to pay $1 for sauce which i thought was fine. The menu is a bit small...but i guess for $14 you get what you pay for. The beef and pork slices are very good and very finely sliced which i like. Some of my hot pot favs were absent like the tofu puffs, the enoki mushrooms and of course there is no seafood or dumplings for this price. BUT what is available and what we did eat was fresh and the quality pretty good.

Service: Anything we ordered came quickly and servers were very nice, friendly, and patient. I was very impressed with the service here. By far one of the best i've experienced in Rmd.

Ambiance: Very small place but cozy and comfy. Decor is nice and appears to be fairly tidy.

Overall: I would definately return for their cheap hotpot. Since i dont eat seafood it doesnt really bother me that it is absent from the menu, but for others it might be a reason to not go, but for the price why not give it a try. i do suggest making reservations since it is pretty small...and especially on cold nights it can get pretty packed!

Worth Returning
Submitted Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - 1:53am [Dine in]

Food: had the deep fried bun which i though was pretty good compared to any i've ever tried...nice and crispy on the outside. salt rock/pepper ribs was more like battered covered pork cutlets. altho flavourful i prefer the little riblets or pork cutlets minus the batter. 3spiced chicken pot was very flavourful. had this crispy duck dish...i'm not usually a fan of duck but this one is not that fatty so it was ok. finally had this broccoli dish w/ fluffy egg whites which was a big hit at our table. this dish has a decent amt of egg whites on top and even seafood inside which most restaurants dont!

Service: very busy. altho we made reservations we still had to wait at least 15min. servers are not much of conversationalists...i guess they're more about efficiency.

Ambiance: nice and clean decor. try to get a booth if you plan on making table convo cuz it can get pretty loud.

Overall: i wouldnt mind trying some other items on the menu. the price is reasonable and the quality quite good. but def would make sure i make reservations AND dont have any time sensitive plans after dinner as it may take longer than expected.

Better Than Tropika!
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 12:20pm [Dine in]

Food: Flavourful and tasty. Original dishes made fresh to order. (Ex. we ordered this pork neck dish which took a bit longer but that was b/c they had to bbq the meat! Most places have it predone and just heat it up!) We tried a variety of diff't dishes and there was something very unique about each one we hadnt tasted elsewhere. The brisket was really tender, the curry just had so many extra ingredients we didnt expect! The presentation of the food was good too.

Service: Nothing good or bad...altho we did find a hair in one of our dishes but not sure who it came fr tho...hum...

Ambiance: Cafe type setting. Not much room for large tables. We were a group of 10 and most of the other tables were for 4 or booths for maybe 6 or so.

Overall: I would def recommend those of you who like Tropika to give this place a try...I thought it was way better and it was cheaper too! If you are a large group maybe make reservations b/c they only have 2 tables they can convert to seat larger groups.

I'm Sold!
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 11:51am [Dine in]

Food: I had the Special Combo which consisted of a BC Roll, Cali Roll, and Kappa Roll for $5.95. My b/f had the Assorted Sushi Combo (14pc) for $9.95. Everything was sooo good! The pieces of sushi were big and fresh w/ not too much rice. The cali roll was kidda diff't in that the rice was all rolled in the middle w/ the seaweed outside, but tasted delicious! The ginger and wasabi are in little containers at each table for self serve. We had no complaints about the food at all!

Service: Small enough you can waive anyone down for service. Everyone was polite and courteous.

Ambiance: Very small little restaurant. I can see ppl doing take out if it's full. We ended up having to sit at the sushi bar, but we didnt mind.

Overall: Definately coming back for the great food at this reasonable price!

So Slow...
Submitted Sunday, September 9, 2007 - 1:27am [Dine in]

Food: all fairly tasty and hot...too bad the food took forever to come out. we'd get one dish, finish it...then wait 10min w/ no food for the next dish. kitchen way too short staffed or slow. they also ran out of red bean soup at the end of the night and gave us orange slices instead. meh.

Service: too slow and disorganized. took us a while to get tea. flagged ppl down to take our order, they'd start walking over then disappear. we ordered soup and the female server just dumped it on the table and left. we had to scoop it out ourself...then a male server walked by and saw us scooping our own soup and he looked confused.

Ambiance: fairly nice and clean inside for a chinese restaurant...i think it may have been renovated some time ago. busy busy busy.

Overall: the food was alright and the restaurant is pretty nice inside, but def not worth the long wait for our food. we use to walk by this restaurant all the time and see the crowds of ppl waiting outside, now we know why...cuz it takes so long to get your food! not worth the wait. other restaurants we can go to.

Dim Sum...Nothing Special for $$$
Submitted Sunday, September 9, 2007 - 1:07am [Dine in]

Food: when it's early or not that busy, you just order a la carte, but later if it gets busy they'll bring food out on platters. we ordered assorted dishes, steamed mushroom rice rolls, chicken feet, gai lan, steamed bbq pork buns, shrimp on toast, veggie dumpling, and some others...nothing really stood out as being really "good" for the price

Service: servers were very attentive and polite.

Ambiance: nicer than most chinese restaurants. it's fairly clean and tidy. has a great view of the water right now, but once the hotel goes up it'll be all gone!

Overall: for the price $20+/person for dimsum it's not really worth it for the quality of the food. it wasnt horrible, but it def wasnt worth the price...i'd rather walk a couple of blocks and go to kirin.

I Recommend!
Submitted Sunday, September 9, 2007 - 12:57am [Dine in]

Food: My b/f had the assorted sushi combo and chopped scallop roll which he thought was pretty good and fresh. I had the teriyaki chicken box. The chicken was skinless and grilled w/o too much sauce which I liked. Came w/ salad which had a nice refreshing citris like dressing, 2pc deep fried gyoza, assorted tempura lightly battered and cali rolls. All in all food was pretty good.

Service: It wasnt too overwhelmingly busy when we were there and the service was pretty good. The came by to see how we were doing and poured tea, etc.

Ambiance: Small little place...nothing special. There's a lot of ppl that just do take out.

Overall: I would come back for sure again and recommend it to others based on my experience today.

Food: nothing extraordinary. very typical. had chicken tandoori and this other chicken curry sauce dish w/ naan. had a veggi samosa.

Service: the one waiter whom may have been the mgr or the owner was very attentive and polite. i think he may have been afraid it was our first indian food experience, but he was also very attentive to everyone around us as well.

Ambiance: No strong theme inside. Nothing special or adversely negative.

Overall: Not sure if I would return. I think we would rather try some other Indian places. If you have an Entertainment book, remember to bring your coupon to save some $$$!

AYCE Weekend Lunch
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2007 - 12:44pm [Dine in]

Food: The menu contains about 20 items. There's a good variety. At our table some of the favourites were the beef salad, calamari, green chicken currie, blk rice dessert. The food is made to order and is not buffet style so it's hot and freshly cooked.

Service: We went w/ a group of ppl that couldnt read the menu and the waiter was really patient and just bought us a little of everything. Everyone was really attentive and polite.

Ambiance: Nice decor and cleanly maintained. Nice mix of music from english to chinese to thai.

Overall: I would recommend anyone to give this a try. For around $11/person for AYCE lunch it's pretty good deal.

I feel tricked!
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2007 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

So for Father's Day we decided to take my b/f's dad to Guu in Aberdeen to give it a try. We had been raving about Guu to his dad and since he doesnt eat raw stuff we thought Guu would be great b/c they've got so much tapas that are "cooked".

We went in for lunch and were seated promptly. Took a look a the menu and were shocked at what we saw b/c the menu was completely different. Totally not what we expected. So needless to say we left. We told the waitress and she was fine w/ it. She said they have a diff't menu fr the Guus downtown...

So if you're going to Guu in Aberdeen expecting to eat some of your Guu downtown favourites...be forewarned...only the name is the same!

Angel? Def not Angelic Service!
Submitted Thursday, May 3, 2007 - 11:11pm [Dine in]

Came here for a friend's bday for some drinks.

Food: Didnt have any food but drinks were standard. Nothing that really stood out.

Service: Awful is all I can say. Our waitress/server never came around. Lounge was less than 1/2 full. She took forever to get us our drinks. Ppl that joined our group after we ordered our drinks got theirs much faster at the bar...infact, some of them had multiple drinks before our came. And when she brought the drinks she had no idea whom they were for nor cared to find out. She had a really bad attitude problem. I saw her trying to open a bottle of wine for like 10min. It looked really embarrassing b/c the couple was trying to have "romantic" glass of wine and she just could not open the damned thing! Later she brought a bunch of drinks on a tray walking by one of our chairs knocking over my g/f's jacket and stepping thru it! then kicked another chair out of the way. And when i say "kicked" I mean kicked! Not pushed aside. My b/f asked to settle his tab, she never came back w/ it. He had to hunt her down himself!! Other ppl in our group had negative comments to make about her in terms of her poor and slow service and bad attitude.

Ambiance: nice enough inside. I think it has a lot of potential. it's suppose to be a lounge...no real dance floor...and they put the strobe ball on...that kind of confused me. it's kind distracting for ppl just wanting to sit down for some drinks...a little difficult to talk over the loud music too.

Overall: The bad service from this one person really made a strong negative first impression on me. Really doesnt incline me to want to return, however, I know this is one experience, it's just too bad it's also the first one. If I were invited to another function here I def wouldnt turn it down b/c of the location, but I do hope the next time I will encounter better service.
