Service needs help
Submitted Saturday, January 10, 2009 - 4:55pm [Dine in]

The service here is I guess, old fashioned because a French man greeted us and sat us down but he didn't greet us again at our table until after 15 minutes only to tell us he would be right with us. I was a little peeved but I tolerated it. He was good at recommending dishes but seemed a little rude, probably because he had other tables to attend to because he was the only server there. The food was decent but I don't think I will go back. It wasn't anything special that would make me go back there. I would much rather go to La Regalade or Chez Michel in West Vancouver.

Great selection of Belgian beers
Submitted Saturday, January 10, 2009 - 4:46pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is very cute and is easy to miss because it is so small. They have a large selection of Belgian beers which I enjoy. I always order the mussels because they are consistently excellent. They also have a good selection of cheese. I don't have bad to say except that it should be bigger! The portobello mushroom tart is really good too.

This place looks amazing. We went there pretty early and there were a lot of people there. The decor is beautiful and service is excellent. I shared 3 appetizers with my friends: prawns, mussels and foie gras. The prawns were good except the sauce was too overbearing and salty, the mussels were overcooked and I've had better foie gras. For my main, I had the duck entree and it was excellent. It was probably one of the best duck meals I've had in a long time. My friend had the scallops and those were very good as well. My other friend had the venison risotto. She didn't particularly enjoy it but when I tried it, it was alright. She said it was too salty. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I think for the most part, you pay for the atmosphere and decor but it is a nice, trendy place to go.

I am always excited to go here because the service is excellent and the food is even better. The waffles are to die for. I have tried many desserts and they are all so tasty. I don't have anything bad to say about this restaurant. Great place to go before a hockey game, it gets packed but they will try their best to accommodate you. I definitely recommend Chambar to anybody.

Mixed reviews

I have been here many times with my parents who speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese. Whenever I go there with my parents, we are treated with the utmost respect. It makes me ask my father if he knows them. The service is amazing when I go with my family, the food is always excellent and consistent. The food comes quickly and is of the best Chinese food I can get in Vancouver. At the end of a dinner, they always offer us dessert of our choice, it is complimentary, or so I thought.

I always rave about this restaurant to all my friends who are not Chinese. So I decided to take them. I do look young and so do my friends but we are in our mid-20s. I know how to order Chinese food but for the sake of my friends, I ordered in English. I went twice with 2 different groups of non-Chinese friends and they were both horrible. We spent 2.5 hours there unwillingly waiting for our food. Chinese food comes out all together once the soup and seafood dishes have passed. But this time, they came out one by one. I thought this was very peculiar having been here at least 75 times in my lifetime. I told the waiter that we were catching a movie in 1/2 hour, after the crab had arrived and left, giving them plenty of time to get the food out. We waited for what seemed, forever. We spent over $250 of food between 6 of us and I left very disappointed. I asked for dessert because my friends had never had red bean dessert always given at the end of dinner. The waiter told me that there wasn't dessert. I asked him "not even oranges?" that I had seen on other tables. He replied no. Everything had gone wrong and my previous raves about the restaurant was of course, not taken seriously. I don't think my friends have been their since. The food was good but I couldn't enjoy it because of my frustration. I had emailed the restaurant about my experience and he refunded my dinner. I was grateful for that but I felt really let down because it was one of my favourite Chinese restaurants. From now on, I am never going there again without my family.

Take what you want from my experience and act accordingly.

Waitress was really bad
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 9:51pm [Dine in]

I usually come here because I like the food. It is upscale and has a good atmosphere. I have been here about 10 times but now I will never go back. There was a halibut special on and I ordered it. We were sitting by the kitchen and I overheard the cook say that they didn't have any halibut left even though it was 6pm. We were in a bit of a rush but it was alright if we were late. I assumed the cook would replace it with something of the same type of fish like sablefish. (They also didn't erase the halibut on the board of featured dishes so everyone else was being fooled).

The waitress informed us that it was going to be a bit of a wait longer than usual because the kitchen was "slammed". The dish came 1 hour later and it definitely wasn't halibut, it was cod. Paying $28 for a cod dish expecting halibut is not acceptable. The waitress didn't tell us because she didn't want us to wait even longer for another dish. I don't mind a change in my dish, it happens all the time but tell me and I will always accept it and especially in this case, I can't help it because they didn't have any halibut left. I asked her if I had received halibut because it didn't taste like it. She admitted it wasn't halibut and that it was cod. She offered us coffee for the dish, I declined because I don't drink coffee at night. But offering us coffee for a halibut dish isn't sufficient for me to come back. When I went to pay the bill, I was surprised to see that she had the halibut dish on it after I caught her serving me cod instead of halibut. I was very disappointed. Having being a server myself, I want all my customers to leave happy, I was most certainly not. I not only waited 1 hour for my meal, but I waited for cod. Needless to say, she did not receive a tip on a very expensive tab.

Kansai Japanese Restaurant1315 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver
best japanese food in town
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 9:39pm [Dine in]

This place has the best value and the best japanese food ever. The salmon is only wild and is a good price considering most other japanese restaurants would charge regular farmed salmon for the same price. They have other options on the menu I have never seen in other places. I tried some places up the road it wasn't even close to comparing to Kansai. I have never gone anywhere else since I came here. The food is amazing.

The atmosphere was great and service was good. The ambiance was a little loud and a little too dark for my liking when I sat inside for dinner. The service was like any other young staff, energetic and motivated to suit your needs. During the summer, they open the patio and when I went with my friends, the patio was full of smokers and I don't smoke and we sat on the patio to enjoy the sunshine but all the smokers go out there to enjoy their meal and smokes at the same time. It was not a good experience outside so I recommend inside for non-smokers. The food is pretty good too and they have an incredible wine selection.

Outstanding

The atmosphere is very inviting and the service is really good. The one thing that was very interesting was the 2 or 3 tiered seafood towers. All the seafood plates are incredible and it was really hard to choose which one. The decor is very modern and different from other restaurants. The desserts are divine and all look so appetizing. I highly recommend this restaurant when you are in Whistler.

Awesome
Submitted Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 2:48pm [Dine in]

I have heard many good reviews about Lumiere and when I went there, it was incredible. The food is overpriced but I guess it is the price to pay for a very good dinner. I would have liked the dishes to be more filling because they tend to be smaller portions. The service is second to none and it had a good ambiance. The butternut squash ravioli is really good but the 4 cheese macaroni is not special. The Barbeque duck broth is really good also. I recommend this restaurant if you are going with a small group and willing to splurge on a good meal.

Fabulous

I love this restaurant. The food is excellent and even though the restaurant is small, it is well worth the wait for a table. Everything on the menu is incredible and even though the food sometimes is SO spicy your nose is running and you're about to cry, it is so good it makes you want to eat more and finish it. I highly recommend any prawn dish. There is also an eggplant dish that may not sound appealing for those who don't like eggplant, it surprisingly doesn't taste much like eggplant and is really good. The atmosphere is enlightening with nice furniture.

Manager's Response to the food
Submitted Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 2:30pm [Dine in]

I love the Keg and go there all the time especially when it is lobster season. I had never been to the one in Richmond and decided to take some family who live there. We ordered 3 lobster dinners and I have had plenty of them from the Keg. This one was overcooked and the meat was hard and VERY chewy. The service was great like always from the waiter. When we asked to see the manager if their lobsters were live, he said "of course." then he told us that they were just swimming right before they cooked them. I believed him because I know they are always live. Then he told me that he didn't like the lobster promotions they have every year because he always get small, bad lobsters. While he was telling me this elaborate story of him not liking the promotion, I was thinking, "you are the manager, you are suppose to promote this product. Don't tell me that the reason why it is bad is because of the lobsters but because your staff overcooked the lobster." It didn't make sense on my part for him to be telling me that I'm taking your offer on this promotion and you don't like it. In the end, he gave us 1 other lobster that was good but after all the talking, it wasn't worth it. I am never going back to this particular one.

Not that great
Submitted Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 2:21pm [Dine in]

I went to Hy's and reserved the morning of the day for 7:30pm on the phone. When I asked for 7:30, the woman who I recall when I saw her was an elderly woman, told me to come at 7 but I couldn't because I was catching a movie with my family. I told her 7:30pm because if I reserve for 7, I will be late. To me, people from the restaurant are not suppose to tell me when to come but I am doing them a favour by telling them I will have a party of 10 so they can prepare and so I can get a table when I come. I ignored her remark to me because I thought it was just an inexperienced person on the other side of the call but when I got there at 7:30, SHE told me that I was suppose to be there at 7. Excuse me? I told you that I was going to be here at 7:30 and I was. Please do not tell me when to come when I told you 7:30. I didn't say that to her but I was tempted to. I was turned off by her comment. A restaurant like Hy's should have a young, sophisticated woman as a hostess, not an elderly woman. As I sat down, everyone else at the table was wondering why the woman was so rude. We were all dressed appropriately and I did not feel out of place.

The food was not spectacular as I have heard many good reviews from friends. I can get better service and better food for my money at The Keg. If I do go there next time, which will not be soon, it will not be because of my recommendation but someone else's and maybe next time I will go with a postive attitude and their reputation will be right.
