Pretty bad
Submitted Saturday, June 9, 2012 - 11:50pm [Take-out]

The cart was really close by and it was rainy so I dropped in. Had one of the sandwiches and it was awful. The small portion offered was ridiculous for its price. A coworker had the soup and claimed it wasn't very impressive either. I guess I should have seen this coming.. french food from a food cart is a bad idea.

Looks great, tastes awful
Submitted Thursday, July 21, 2011 - 2:20am [Dine in]

I've come here a couple of times and usually with a large group of people so I've had a chance to sample most of their cakes. In the bright displays they look so good but in reality they all taste so bad. I don't think they use quality ingredients in the cakes because they don't have much flavor and have a plastic artificial texture to them. Plus they are so expensive too, stay away from the cakes.

The gelato on the other hand isn't so bad so that's all I get now on the rare occasions I visit. Depending on who makes your drink, it can be fantastic or terrible. Its pretty hit or miss, I've had some great cappuccinos and other times the milk is over steamed and the espresso sour.

Great Take Out
Submitted Thursday, July 7, 2011 - 1:45pm [Take-out]

I used to go to this place often for take out as it was close to work. The food is good, always consistent. Compared to all the other places on Robson this one is probably the best value for the food you get. The girls working there are very sweet and energetic. This is also probably the cheapest place to order takoyaki. They are deep fried but they still taste great.

Expensive
Submitted Thursday, July 7, 2011 - 1:32pm [Dine in]

I came here a little while ago so I don't remember the exact names of the dishes we ordered. However the most memorable (or, only things that I remember) about this place was that all of our dishes were way too salty. I know greek food is usually on the saltier side but this was over the top. Luckily the service was good and our cups were constantly refilled with water to wash down the salt.

The prices are expensive in comparison to the amount of food you get. We ordered the pan fried squid as an appetizer which was $10. We were served literally 5 tiny pieces of squid. My eyes popped when they served the dish, I can't believe the server wasn't embarrassed over placing the tiny little dish on our table. The squid was delicious, however at $2 for a bite it was a total rip off.

Terrible Pizza
Submitted Wednesday, May 11, 2011 - 1:48am [Delivery]

Ordered two medium pizzas and some wings for delivery. With the tip it came to $40, which is ridiculous for the crap quality of pizza. The cheese had this rubber texture and honestly tasted like it too. The crust was burnt and there were so little toppings. On my hawaiian pizza only half of it was covered in pineapples. Fully regretting deviating from my usually franchise pizza place to try this place.

Cheap and Delicious food
Submitted Thursday, April 14, 2011 - 7:57pm [Dine in]

You would never notice this place if you drove by. Its in a small grocery store plaza and off to the side. The menu covers a variety of food including chinese dishes, pho and mini hot pots.

I highly recommend to mini hot pots. They are packed full of ingredients and are so flavorful. It also comes with rice or noodles and the portion is quite big considering its only $8.99

My favourite is the chili hot pot served with pork with rice.

Definitely worth going at least once. Because then you'll get hooked.

Very good service
Submitted Thursday, April 14, 2011 - 7:44pm [Dine in]

I'm a bit late in writing this review as its been a couple of months since I came here for DOV 2011. It was our first time coming to trafalgars and I found the restaurant to have very pretty decor. It was simple but the mirrors, chandeliers and glass windows made a very elegant ambiance.

The food was good, I like how they used local sources for their ingredients. However what stood out the most were the desserts. We tried the chocolate cake, creme brulee and this passion fruit cake. All three desserts were of great quality and detail. I was then told the desserts came from the bakery two stores down (and I have since been returning to the bakery for their cakes).

The most outstanding part of our evening was the service. Our server was very polite, attentive and professional. Our glasses of water were never empty. He was knowledgeable of the food and when he wasn't sure he took the time to go to the kitchen to find out. He was particularity pleased with how well he treated my mother, english is not her first language so she usually has troubles communicating but he still connected with her and made nice conversation with her.

Disrespectful
Submitted Thursday, April 14, 2011 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

I've come here a couple of times mostly during lunch with friends and the food has been consistently good. I particularly like the complementary foccia bread and vinegar that they serve as an appetizer.

However the last time I had gone was on a Friday night and the restaurant was busy. I went to the hostess to tell her I have a party of 6 and she tells me that it will be about a 10 minute wait, which is fine and we were willing to wait for a table. Right after our conversation another guy speaks to the hostess and asks for a table for 6. She tells him it will be a longer wait because I had just come in front of him. The guy proceeds to tell the hostess how he knows a friend (a name she didnt recognize) in the kitchen so they should get a table first. After some confirmation, she turns to me to tell me that 'Oh they actually have a reservation for 6 so I will have to wait for a table after them' which was going to be a 30min wait.

I can't believe she had the nerve to say that to me while I watched their whole interaction unfold. It unprofessional and disrespectful. As this is the kind of bad business that Anduccis runs, my friends and I will never be returning here.

Ketchup or curry?
Submitted Thursday, April 14, 2011 - 6:51pm [Dine in]

Decided to try handi one night when we were craving some Indian food. When we first entered I noticed the bowls of curry on another patrons table and it was huge. Clearly I was mistaken as I later found it was actually a plate suspended on a warmer.

The food was terrible. We ordered the butter chicken, vindaloo and a vegetarian cheese curry as well as some naan. The naan was cooked fairly nicely and was probably the only notable dish. The butter chicken tasted like ketchup. The vindaloo was not spicy at all (we asked for medium heat) and the vegetarian curry was bland. To be honest all 3 curries tasted the same. No spices, no curry flavor, just ketchup.

The portions were so small. For $13 you get this small shallow plate of curry with about 5 pieces of chicken in it.

Will definitely not be returning.

Fresh Sushi
Submitted Thursday, February 3, 2011 - 1:45am [Dine in]

Been meaning to try this new sushi place for a while and finally had a chance to last night. The decor of the restaurant is tasteful. We sat under these paper lanterns that were very pretty, despite the fact that it casted giant shadows on our table.

We ordered 10 pieces of nigiri, some rolls, salmon sashimi and a donburi. The sashimi was very fresh and delicious. The tuna melted in your mouth and I have to agree with their 'perfect proportion' of the fish vs rice ratio. It is a smaller piece of sushi but they would be happy to make it a bigger size if you wanted to.

The server was very nice and constantly refilled our tea. She even came by a couple of times to make sure everything was okay (which doesn't usually happen at asian places)

The only downside about this place was the price. For two people our bill came to around $60. The prices matched a sushi place downtown not so much a sushi place in Burnaby.

Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House777 Thurlow Street, Vancouver
Good Food, Bad Service
Submitted Saturday, July 31, 2010 - 11:35pm [Dine in]

Joe Fortes seems to have made a name for itself sitting on the corner of Robson so we decided to try it out. We went during the Olympics and ordered a couple of appetizers, the chef's special for the entree and a dozen of oysters. Besides the oysters, the food was delicious. When we dug into one of the oysters and found that it didn't seem very fresh because it tasted fishy.

The service was very disappointing. After ordering I don't know what our server was thinking but after delivering our first place of the appetizer he hands me the bill, he apparently had forgotten the rest of our order. When I mentioned to him that the oysters were not very fresh he ignored my comment and told me to just try something else. The fact the the server tried to stick me with the bill before our meal actually began really dampened the entire meal.

Phenomenal Chinese Food
Submitted Saturday, July 31, 2010 - 11:24pm [Dine in]

This new restaurant tucked in the corner of the complex definitely has the best Chinese food on Hastings. Burnaby has no decent place for Chinese food so I will be going that little extra bit to come to Luda from now on. The servers were incredibly friendly when they were taking my order and constantly refilled my tea.

The wonton and noodle soup was one of the best I've ever had. The server explained to me their soup base breaks away from the traditional base and has been well received and I have to agree, it does taste a little different than your usual soup base but it is a nice twist to an old favorite. I could tell they used good quality ingredients in their dishes as they were very flavorful.

The decor of the restaurant sets a nice ambiance. Everything was very clean and sanitary. This restaurant is highly recommended. I will be bringing my friends and family here for our Chinese dine outs from now on!

What Happened?
Submitted Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - 11:27pm [Dine in]

I used to adore this little cafe. It had delicious cheesecakes, the most amazing cappuccinos and the owner was so sweet. However it seems like the owners have changed and so has the quality in the food and drinks. The cheesecakes are similar but the taste is off and often too sweet, the new faces can't seem to make a decent cappuccino and they are definitely not the most friendly bunch. I used to go often but rarely do so now, I miss the old owners.

Came here with a large group of people and we were seated in this nice enclosed table. The food selection was pretty good however pricey. Regular shrimp tempura that can be found at any japanese restaurant was triple the price here. The sake is served in a giant bamboo flask which is a nice touch. Would like it if there were more drink specials.

Best Pho in Burnaby
Submitted Monday, May 17, 2010 - 3:46pm [Dine in]

Taste of Asia is one of the best pho places around. The soup tastes authentic and not just packed with msg. Its a small place that is easily overlooked and does not have the best decor however they have the tastiest pho around. The people there are also very friendly, always smiling, which is rare for a pho establishment.

Terrible Steak
Submitted Saturday, March 28, 2009 - 6:02pm [Dine in]

I went around Christmas time with my boyfriend as we always pass the restaurant and notice that it looks very nice from the outside. Inside its actually really cramped. When we arrived all the tables were full and there was barely any space for us to stand and wait for a table. Luckily the awkward wait wasn't so long and we were soon seated.

We ordered the calamari for appies and the seafood pasta and steak. The pasta presentation looked very nice, unfortunately it tasted very bland it was almost cold. The steak was also a very big disappointment, it was barely warm and overcooked (i ordered it as rare). It seemed ridiculous that a steakhouse failed at making steak. Terrible food for its price. We will not be returning again.

Good food & Eye Candy
Submitted Monday, March 23, 2009 - 10:44pm [Dine in]

Everything about this restaurant is very pretty. From the amazing glass display in the front, to the food, the bar and of course all the good looking servers.

I've visited this Joeys location several times and most have been very enjoyable experiences. On weekends it gets really busy but I guess they are prepared for that as they have a large waiting area. I like how they occasionally go around with samples of food for you to taste while you're waiting.

Don't get the lobster ravioli as it tastes like shoe rubber. But definitely pair whatever you have with the crispy mashed potatoes and have the apple pie for dessert

Best Sushi
Submitted Monday, March 23, 2009 - 10:29pm [Dine in]

I came here upon recommendations that I would have the best sashimi ever with a side warning that it will probably be the most expensive as well. Both turned out to be true.
The place is run by a Japanese couple who were very friendly and nice. They helped me with the menu and the different types of sashimi. The portions were a bit small but I suppose this is expected in gourmet sushi, it really was the most delicious and freshest sashimi I've ever tasted.

At the end of the night the bill came down to $125 for two people. So perhaps just the occasional visit will satisfy my palette and wallet. Definitely worth visiting at least once.

Bad Service
Submitted Monday, March 23, 2009 - 10:13pm [Dine in]

We have passed by this bakery many times and finally decided to go in to give it a try. Upon entering the first thing we noticed were the rather large amounts of flies flying around. Mind you, this is during March as the weather isn't even that warm yet in Burnaby so it makes me question the cleanliness of the bakery.

None of the pastries displayed in cases had labels or prices which made ordering them very difficult. The employee who was serving us seemed really annoyed as we asked about the different pastries and scowled through the entire process.

When we asked to buy a loaf of bread off the shelf she just reached up and grabbed it with her hands without tongs or gloves. Very unsanitary, it didn't help that she was also wearing black nail polish which is really unsuitable for an employee who prefers to grab food with her bare hands. At the end of the transaction the employee did not smile or even say thank you.

The pastries and loaf of bread was alright. But the terrible service we received will ensure we won't be visiting again. Much rather go to Valley Bakery down a couple of blocks where the store is clean and the employees are much friendlier.

I had an excellent dining experience at Water Street Cafe. They have a wonderful location on the corner of gastown and the nice big glass windows allowed a nice view of everything. The night we went it was raining and it just added to the whole romantic atmosphere. We went for dine out vancouver and left feeling very full. Definitely must try their crab cakes.
