Service lesson to be learned here
Submitted Monday, August 17, 2015 - 10:11am [Dine in]

J, her hubby and their son stopped in while enjoying the sunny Vancouver weather. For an early dinner, the place was packed. After a good half an hour wait, we finally managed to get a seat. Normally I wouldn't feel the wait but the kiddo was really getting worked up about not getting served. Really want to thank the server for being comprehensive and talking to him all the while. Brownie points for that!

Once we were seated, things moved rather quickly. Our order was taken and appys started arriving. For the first time, I liked the pakoras over the samosas. Kudos to the one who recommended it. J and I especially enjoyed our chicken methi. It was probably one of the best I've had in a while.

More than the food, the service was excellent. The waiter was patient with us, even when the kid spilled all his drink on his shirt. Water constantly refilled was probably a sign from J who found the food a bit too spicy.

Don't know what happened this time
Submitted Monday, August 17, 2015 - 7:06am [Dine in]

I am usually a sucker for comfort food, and so every time I make it to Vancouver, the Flying Pig is the place go to. Without question. There's something about this place that keeps on drawing me back, not sure if it is their pulled pork poutine or what, but the ambience is great. I love the nonchalant feeling to this place - it's like everyone is not too worried or hurried in having a good time - but all within the limit of course.

This time around, things weren't such as pleasant. We arrived for an early dinner only to find ourselves with a line-up at the door. Comprehensive and normal. Nothing to worry about. We were told the wait was going to be half and hour maximum but ended up waiting more than an hour. Okay, we can deal with that. What we couldn't deal with was the rude staff and manager. Had it not been for my friends, I would have left. Hoping this was a one time thing and won't happen again.

Slow and spicy
Submitted Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 1:08pm [Dine in]

Someone recommended me this place for good Indian food, so I expected it to be top-notch, at the least. First of all, I had to wait an excruciating amount of time to get a table. And to make matters worse, we were only two people waiting for a table.
When we finally got a table, we ordered out appetizers and drinks. Then, it was another wait…for our actual food. When I told the waiter he made a face like if he had forgotten or something. The meal starts to get expensive when you start to order sides and drinks. The lamb vindaloo was too spicy for me. I had ordered medium, so I don’t know why it was so hot. The prawns were okay in terms of taste and size. The matter paneer was too much sauce for me and so I had to give it to my friend to finish. In their defense, their breads were really good (naans).

And I don’t even like coffee
Submitted Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

I do not consider myself much of a coffee person but I loved the coffee and service offered here in 49th. Their Venezuelan coffee was fresh and didn’t taste anything fabricated, like in many other coffee shops popping up here and there. The baristas know their stuff, which made me fall over for a cup. Their lattes also looked pretty good. I also indulged in some donuts (peanut butter and jelly in case you were wondering), on insistence of a friend, and found them delicious. Making the line was worth it! Before leaving I even bought an extra pair Lucky donuts to take home. Caution though, they were a bit expensive! But worth trying.

Very slow service
Submitted Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 2:56pm [Dine in]

I usually come here for dates, but came here the other night with my family. We were a group of 7 total with my sister's fiance and had a reservation but still had to wait to be seated, despite calling beforehand and arriving on time. I love Italian food, and so does my mom, so we decided to stick around.

The service was extremely slow, and the waiters did not seem to be very engaged or interested. Usually I don't care, but for the occasion and prices we were paying, I expected more. This Italian was always slow but this time it left me disappointed. The food was alright, but my linguine pescatore was a little off. There was very little shrimp and the mussels were so-so.

Homey and great
Submitted Wednesday, September 10, 2014 - 3:14pm [Dine in]

Cerezo cafe and bar is the perfect little cutesy place for japanese fusion-style tapas. I love coming here because there is a very comfortable, kind of homey vibe to it. The restaurant is a formerly old house that has been turned into a business. You don't feel like you are dining at a restaurant here, but rather at a friend's place....or your own home if you like. The waiters always stop by and make sure you're fine and understand what you have ordered.

The good vibe of the place also oozes through to the food. Each plate is made with utmost care; I often feel a little pained at having to eat food that looks like a piece of art. They have the best toro sashimi I have tried, and their negi miso beef doesn't disappoint as well. The desserts, however, are the winners. There is not one dessert I have tried which I have not liked, but my favorites are the carrot cake and or anything with chocolate in it (chocolate Mousse Cheesecake, etc).

Not my pick for take out..
Submitted Tuesday, September 9, 2014 - 11:44am [Take-out]

Like Maurya. I consider myself to be a fairly regular at their lunch buffets because they actually serve good food., unlike other indian restaurants that offer buffets. But seriously, their take out left much to be desired. They let me down. I ordered early but nonetheless my food took forever to come. I called to check whether they had forgotten or something and they just said it should be on its way. Seriously?!? No sorry nothing. The jhinga vindaloo was way too spicy despite me ordering a mild or medium.

Mercato2224 4th Street SW, Calgary
Best Italian in the city
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2014 - 10:15am [Dine in]

Mercatos is one of those pricey restaurants in the city, but I don't say that to complain. It is definitely worth it. I have been coming here for years and it has consistently been a reference for its good quality of food and service. So it has gained itself the reputation for being expensive, in my opinion. I can come here when it is busy or kind of empty (because it is never empty, getting a reservation is a problem) and still get the best of the service. The waiters are extremely polite and very well-trained to handle huge numbers of people.

I usually come to mercatos for lunch. Their pastas are very yummy and fresh, be it the gnocchi or the risotto. Or the bistecca. All with a good glass of wine of course!

Disappointing! Won't be back
Submitted Wednesday, September 3, 2014 - 3:19pm [Dine in]

The title says it all. Bowness used to be so great...the food was amazing but this time around it is sup-par. I had heard about things going downhill here, but didn't expect it to be so.

Wait times are ridiculous, even though me and my friends arrived rather quickly and knew exactly what to order, our order took forever to come. One hour! And when the waitress brought our order, she even mixed up one of our orders and didnt even appologize when she tried to charge us for it. Seriously? How do you guys stay in business!?!?
