Fiddlehead Joe's Eatery1012 Beach Ave., Vancouver
A summer favourite
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:14am [Dine in]

This is an ideal place for a summer meal. The entire restaurant is open to the wrap around deck even if you do not manage to get a seat outside. This place is popular and the post renovation decor brings it up a notch. You can wear flip flops or not. The food is consistently tasty and well-priced. I love the lamb sandwich; the fiddlehead soup and salad variety is great. You can pick from an assortment of hot entrees too. I would love to close the place down for a private party - maybe this is the year.

Trendy diner
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:10am [Dine in]

The food and service are not bad here though not memorable. It was not expensive considering it is Rob Feenie's. It is a unique and interesting place for lunch if you are looking for something different.

It's not about the food
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:06am [Dine in]

The food is not memorable nor is the service. It is completely about the entertainment and you have got to try it. Great place for a unique large group celebration. I wish we had more supper clubs in Vancouver where you could eat then stay awhile - Frederico's is one of the very few. Dress anyway you like, many do to the point of outrageous. Be prepared to dance and laugh all night.

Sushi with a twist
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:02am [Dine in]

This is sushi art that tastes exceptional. Everytime I have dined here, it has been an experience. I always sit at the counter and eat what the chef recommends - mainly the raw stuff. You can't go wrong by dining this way. You have less control over the bill but it's worth it. The people here really pay attention to detail when it comes to both the customers and the food. I don't even know what to recommend because I don't know the names of what I've eaten there - most of it is probably not on the menu anyway.

Most reliable casual meal
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:57am [Dine in]

I have been to every Earl's in Vancouver and then some. The Paramount has the best ambiance with its design and crowd. The guys always pick this joint and I'm starting not to mind because the baseball cut steak, the thick pork chop, the wings, the pasta and the edamame are all pretty good. For a casual and quick meal before a movie, you can count on Earl's for consistency. The margaritas and bellinis are great and they have an exceptional wine list for this calibre of restaurant - fairly priced too.

Alright barbeque
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:52am [Dine in]

If you feel like barbeque downtown, this is not a bad place to grab a casual meal before a game. I have been there a few times on someone else's pick and it's a satisfactory meal but not overly impressed nor disappointed. The ribs and collard greens were okay.

Ideal for the business lunch
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:48am [Dine in]

Food is beautifully prepared and tastes good! Service is outstanding and ambiance, even at lunchtime is wonderful. Yes, the desserts - that's because of Thomas Haas - the dessert artist of Vancouver. If you just want to try their desserts, go up to Senses for vanilla bean creme brulee and the perfect latte.

Best naan in town
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:43am [Dine in]

They have an authentic naan oven here. That's why the naan is perfect and yummy! The owners are friendly and service great. I have enjoyed casual lunches and dinners here. You come for the food and they will bring it to you. Butter chicken and everything that I have had on the menu were exceptional. I would say one of the best Indian restaurants in town.

Dessert alert
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:40am [Dine in]

If you like dessert and haven't been to Death By Chocolate then you're an imposter. Oh boy - mile high everything... Cakes and pies that taste as good as they look. It is hard to decide what to have - truly the kid in the candy store phenomena. Start this week and try something different every week then go on a diet.

Pancake craving place
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:36am [Dine in]

I have been to most of the Pannekoek Houses and the pannekoek is very consistent everywhere. My two favourites are the Apple or the Canadian. They serve fresh squeezed orange juice - got to like that. Cheap and cheerful breakfast and don't expect too much ambiance. It's clean and comfortable for an hour.

Architecture and ahi
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:32am [Dine in]

The layout of this restaurant is great but the high ceilings and bare floor do increase the room's volume. Fine ambiance for pleasure but not business. The staff are great here; especially if you sit at the bar - you'll meet more of them. Great seafood options - raw oyster selection is great. Food is consistently good. If you like Glowbal and seafood, you'll like Coast. I would like to sit at the communal table one time - looks fun.

Best prosciutto in town
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:24am [Dine in]

I love the prosciutto and melon served here - have it every time. Whether I have sat at the bar for drinks and appies or dinner in a private room, I have enjoyed the food and service here. The chef/owner really takes care of you as reflected by the bill. You do get a great quality Italian dining experience here every time. The architecture and design really creates the atmosphere here but dinner on the patio in the summertime hits the spot too.

An Italian dining experience
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:17am [Dine in]

I say it's not just about food here. It's an experience - the ambiance is warm and luxurious - a little bit of Tuscany right on Robson Street. The food is great Italian. This is the place where I have lengthy dining experiences with great company. It's more upscale but not snobby.

Conservative but consistent
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:12am [Dine in]

The food is good here but it's never my pick because the atmosphere is a little on the mature, stuffy side. My godparents love it - yip. I can't complain about any of the meals I have had here. I think if you are looking for a civilized meal with no surprises and a mature clientele, this is your place.

Great casual eats
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:07am [Dine in]

I like the Cat's Meow. The staff and crab cakes are great. It's one of the few places in town where the servers are attractive and nice. It's a great place for lunch, dinner or a late night snack or dessert. Summer on the patio is popular.

Always a crowd
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 12:03am [Dine in]

If you're looking for hubbub where the food, prices and service are fair, Cardero's is one option. It's always busy and noisy so I prefer coming here in summer for its deck. I like lunch better than dinner here and overall the staff are great. The wine list isn't bad for a more casual place.

Okay expensive seafood
Submitted Friday, January 13, 2006 - 11:58pm [Dine in]

I find the prices high here for what you get - neither quality nor quantity. It was one of the original great seafood places in town but now we have so many better options. The people stand out more than the food and ambiance. It's not located in the most desirable area.

Summer drinks option
Submitted Friday, January 13, 2006 - 11:54pm [Dine in]

Bridges has a great deck for a summer meeting place. The food and drinks are satisfactory; actually the nachos are pretty good - heaped full of stuff, perfect for sharing with drinks in hand. I think it's everyone's summer hooky hangout. I never go in any other season.

Cool before it was in style
Submitted Friday, January 13, 2006 - 11:49pm [Dine in]

This was one of the first cool spots in town before it was in style - what we now call trendy. The ambiance is great because it is minimalist and that's pretty much how the food is too. If you want a low key yet interesting place to hang out over a plate of food, the Alibi Room is suitable. The food is fine but not memorable - no complaints anyways.

Great breakfast
Submitted Friday, January 13, 2006 - 10:11pm [Dine in]

Prepare to line-up with everyone else for weekend brunch at Barney's. It's popular because it's good. Lunch and casual dinner or drink at the bar are great too. The food is consistent and reasonable. The staff are great - casual and friendly. All the breakfast items are exceptional - the omelet stands out. Daily specials are my favourite since it is hard to decide what to have.
