Kettle of Fish, A900 Pacific Street, Vancouver
Mediocre seafood downtown
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:55am [Dine in]

A Kettle of Fish doesn't live up to its reputation. Great location but mediocre food, service and ambiance. Expensive for what you get. I felt disappointed with my meal so it was not a memorable one. Living on the west coast, we are fortunate to have so many fresh seafood restaurants in Vancouver. I would recommend many but not this one.

Keg Caesars595 Hornby Street, Vancouver
Expensive for mediocre steak
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:52am [Dine in]

I have been to every Keg in town and even Whistler at least a couple of times. It's never my idea but some guys love that place! The best things on the menu are the prime rib and the Caesar salad - very consistent at every location throughout the years. I find the prices high for the quality of the food, service and establishment. There are much better steakhouse alternatives.

Kamei Royale1030 W Georgia Street, #211, Vancouver
Great Japanese been around for years
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:46am [Dine in]

I have been to all the Kamei's in town. The food is good authentic Japanese at reasonable prices. Service is fine though I have only been at dinnertime. It's a place where I have introduced many friends to sushi for their first time. I suggest for first-timers - order the California roll so you'll be back for more.

Original wonton noodle hole in the wall
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:42am [Dine in]

This is the original wonton noodle hole in the wall and the food, service and decor has not changed one bit. Lots of tasty noodles and congee served up hot and cheap. Barbeque pork or soy sauce chicken to top it off with a plate of Chinese rapini on the side. It's busy but fast. You can gorge yourself for under $10. I go at least a couple times a year - just to pick up barbeque pork sometimes.

Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House777 Thurlow Street, Vancouver
Salmon served medium rare
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:37am [Dine in]

I love it that they ask you how you would like your fish done! I have not had the experience anywhere else in Vancouver. They do know fish here despite their snobby ways. The rooftop patio is nice. In the old days, I ate there more frequently but nowadays, I can find great seafood without the attitude all over town. Plus the corner of Robson and Thurlow isn't that quaint anymore.

Best cobb salad in town
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:33am [Dine in]

Conveniently located, the food and service are good here and the prices surprisingly reasonable. My favourite lunch here is the cobb salad but the salmon clubhouse is huge and tasty too. Service is quick over lunch hour so as to respect the business day crowd. It's never packed so easy to run in and out if you cannot afford a long lunch.

Honjin Sushi138 Davie Street, Vancouver
Best fish of the day
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:28am [Dine in]

Both the Honjins in Yaletown and North Vancouver are great sushi places. For the last three years, I have gone in at least weekly and have had consistent service and exceptional food. I highly recommend ordering off the special board because that is what's freshest and best. Slabs of fresh red tuna and wild sockeye are two favourites of mine. I was once accidentally served tuna tataki which has since become a standard. Occasionally, I will order take out lunch and the combos and bento boxes are great value. My teacup and belly are constantly full here. I sit wherever they put me and the service doesn't waver. I think they're going to start calling me Norm.

Hon's Wun Tun House1339 Robson Street, Vancouver
Cheap Chinese food
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:18am [Dine in]

Large quantities of tasty Chinese food for very little. There is a constant line-up at this one on Robson. The menu is huge and so is the restaurant. The dessert selection is great too. I would suggest pigging out on savouries, take home the leftovers and some desserts to go.

Pricey alright hotel food
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:15am [Dine in]

The staff are there to please so try to fulfill your custom requests. In general, I find hotel restaurants to be more about service than food. The food is fine here but not exciting. The ambiance is pleasant, similar to that of most nice hotel lobbies. It's a bit pricey here but not outstanding so you don't feel like you get great value.

Commercial Drive experience
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:06am [Dine in]

This is one of the best place's to really experience Commercial Drive. The food and service are fine but the ambiance is the differentiating factor here. It's a bit grungy but hey, it's the Drive. Not a bad place to stop for breakfast or lunch.

Mediocre Yaletown eats
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:03am [Dine in]

I've been here for lunch and dinner on someone else's pick and the food and service are alright but next time I would protest. It's not expensive but not cheap for what you're getting. There are many better options in Yaletown both casual and more upscale.

Great buffet
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 2:00am [Dine in]

This is a great place for breakfast or lunch. The buffet is one of the best in town - so many hot and cold options and the desserts... I have had many business meetings here for which this is ideal. Nice hotel, good parking, central location, reliable food and service.

If you like it spicy
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:55am [Dine in]

This family-run business makes you feel like you're having a home-cooked meal in their home. Great service, great food - spicy! What an array of unique dishes. Everything on the menu is good. If you like Asian and you like spicy, you will love Green Lettuce.

Overpriced pub food
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:52am [Dine in]

The service and food are alright and not memorable. I went there once and have not returned. It is quite expensive for what you get in terms of quality. I would not recommend it and the location is a bit out of the way anyways.

Gotham Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar615 Seymour Street, Vancouver
Steak but at what price
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:49am [Dine in]

The long-debated Gotham - it's not really as expensive as the myths but I wouldn't say they offer good value. It's a bit pretentious as to be expected. The lounge is unassuming so not a bad idea to have your meal there; otherwise, I would choose the Boardroom. My favourites there are the raw oysters and the porterhouse.

Alright Asian in Kerrisdale
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:35am [Dine in]

The food and service were fine but not memorable. The menu is varied and inexpensive. My first experience didn't wow me so I haven't been back. There are too many good places to eat in Kerrisdale to return to mediocre.

Still the best mushroom burger
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:32am [Dine in]

I have gone back occasionally since being a teenager for their mushroom burger - they still pile it high. The surroundings look exactly the same but it is getting pricey for what it is. It seems not as popular or busy so the display case section looked a bit empty the last time I was in.

Great Montreal smoked beef
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:28am [Dine in]

Great Montreal smoked beef sandwiches and easy to take out too. It's a fast and casual place to grab lunch and go. It's a really nice change to the other sandwich joints - doesn't taste or feel like fast food. Great service for a casual place.

Food with a view
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:24am [Dine in]

Yes, this is a great place to show Vancouver off to visitors. The food, service and ambiance are good here and in the Canada Place lounge too. I venture over more rarely now because I prefer the quaint standalone restaurants versus the ones in hotels. Great place for special occasion family brunch.

Overcooked fish
Submitted Saturday, January 14, 2006 - 1:20am [Dine in]

My last time at the Fish House, my fish was overcooked so I sent it back - only to get the same piece returned to me. I don't mind giving a place a second chance but please don't insult my intelligence and respect my time and money.
