Central Bistro & Lounge1072 Denman Street, Vancouver
All was well till it wasn't.
Submitted Tuesday, June 1, 2010 - 5:04pm [Dine in]

This is a little over due, but I wanted to post this review.
After the May long weekend, my husband and I decided to try Central Bistro. We were told about their Monday Martini special through a friend who lives downtown. We thought it would be a nice way to
wind down our weekend.
Our first impression was pleasant. Our server (Ashley?) greeted us right away with a smile. The room had a gentle buzz, and the music was at a nice level. However, things started to go awry after our 1st drink.
Number One: The menu is quite confusing. Is it tapas? Italian? West Coast fine dining? The prices clearly are. $18 for Polenta Cakes? Absurd, seeing as how polenta is commonly referred to as peasant food. Their menu seems to be thrown together with little or no format ( for example, items like hemp tofu next to Italian style calamari). My husband has had a substantial amount of experience in the restaurant industry, for years he worked along side an amazing chef @ Le Bernardin in NYC. We also dine in every genre of restaurant, 'hole in the wall' diners to well rated fine dining establishments. It is always unfortunate to see a restaurant like Central, that has so much potential, stray down the wrong path.
Number Two: For the cost of a meal at Central one would think that this establishment would not attract the obnoxious and drunk, but alas, it does.
There was a man seated at the bar (I will abstain from using the word 'gentle'man as he was far from it) who seemed to be quite intoxicated. He yelling and making what we thought sounded like continuous 'horse noises'?! Even more appalling was the fact that he was also yelling obscenities and insulting the wait staff, yet he was not asked to leave.? The 'horse noises' and crude comments continued on for what seemed like an hour. He not only interrupted our evening (along with those around us) but we felt sorry for the poor wait staff as it became apparent that this ignorant individual was an employee there.
I am surprised they did not call him a cab home or that he was not reprimanded by the manager on duty.
It is unfortunate that we were witness to this, as our drinks were fabulous as was the service.

I don't think we will be returning. The unprofessional representation of this bistro paired with the confusing menu, unfortunately overpowered the positive efforts of the staff that served us. It really is a shame.

Pelican Seafood Restaurant1895 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
Pleasant Surprise!
Submitted Monday, May 10, 2010 - 9:50am [Dine in]

We went to Pelican for the first time this weekend. I made a reservation (thankfully, cuz it was packed with a line out the door) for 12pm. I was told over the phone that we may still have to wait and we did, but only 10 min. We were seated and immediately greeted by our friendly server (which was amazing because it was so busy). While we were choosing items from the Dim Sum menu, we were offered BBQ sweet pork buns on the house. They were really good, hot and tasty. Our Dim Sum came out quickly and was DELICIOUS! We were happy with all our choices (minus the spare ribs, these were pretty fatty with not much meat...the only disappointing dish). The service was excellent and very friendly, complete with quality checks, water refills and desert offers. All in all, this place is worth a visit. I would recommend it! For three people, the bill was a total of $50 (tip included) and we were STUFFED! I will be returning, there is so much more on the menu that I would like to try! Wonderful time!

Pacifico Pizzeria & Ristorante970 Smithe Street, Vancouver
Wonderful Time!
Submitted Sunday, May 2, 2010 - 9:47am [Dine in]

My partner and I went to Pacifico this weekend for dinner. I have to say that I believe this to be the best service I have had in Vancouver in a long, long time. The server was genuine and happy. Refills on our soda's/h20 were and automatic, we never had to ask. She was always smiling and although it was really busy, our dirty plates never sat on the table for more than a minute. She was lovely.

The food was almost as good, we a had the four in one pizza, and calamari. My only complaint in that department was that I would like the calamari to have red onion....I know that is typical in greek restaurants, and I am aware that Pacifico is Italian..but still I like a little onion :) The pizza was tasty, with a thin crispy crust, and everything can out in a timely manner. All in all, I will return the next time I am downtown!

Great Value!

I went to Nice today for breakfast. The decor is nothing much...but the value and food is awesome. It was really nice to look at a brunch menu and see the inexpensive pricing.. I think it is $7 for eggs benny ( great deal...not only in Vancouver but anywhere). I had the corned beef hash. It is served with 2 poached eggs, lovely, crispy shredded hash browns and sauteed onions. It was very tasty and priced at $6.75. The service although polite was lacking. I had to ask for everything (water refills, coffee refills etc...things that should be just topped off every once in a while)...it was really busy..so that could of played a role. When I was served however, it was genuine and always with a smile. I will return for sure!

I decided to review Enigma as my 1st on dinehere. I have been here many times for brunch (although it has been awhile since my last visit). It is always great. The service is always solid (however there was one time where I found it a little on the slow side) and the food is always delicious. I love the banana bread that they start you off with. A very nice touch. All in all a great place for brunch....I will return soon.
