I live in New West and there is generally very slim pickins for fine dining to begin with which is I guess why I keep thinking I will get a different impression of the Boathouse and continue to give it a try. As I sat there eating possibly the most unevenly cooked piece of salmon I had ever experienced I could'nt help thinking how Chef Ramsey would have the staff running for shelter within about 5 minutes. My salmon and halibut combo I swear was bundled up fresh at some point in the past month or so and then frozen until moments before hitting the grill. It smelt of bad fish and was raw in some parts and over cooked in others. The "wild rice" was about as wild as Stephen Harper and even more bland and dry. I'm sure it came from a box pre-made. The real kicker was I ordered salmon and fries from the kids menu for my daughter and hers was much better than mine for $29! (albeit very dry but what do you expect for 8 bucks?) The service was a little on the lacking side as well. The waitress completely forgot our appetizer and then asked if she could bring it out after our meals arrived. We did'nt get any bread, which would have most likely been the best part of the meal, and all the tables around us did.
When I first moved to New West The Boathouse was top notch for what you paid. It has consistenly gone downhill since (about 10 years). I have noticed it is a lot less busy as a result so maybe capitalism does work. It is really too bad because it is a great spot with a very nice ambience and would be a perfect place for family events and get togethers. This is about the 5th bad experience out of the last 7 for me so I won't be going back anytime soon or recommending this place to anyone as it is in need of a complete overhaul staff wise from management right down to the mice.
