Very pleasant surprise

Driven past this restaurant for about 20 years but decided to try it about a month and a half ago. It just moved a few blocks over into a nicely renovated building. I always thought that it was more suited for non-chinese clientele but when we showed up...there was a good mix of 50-50 (asian vs. non-asian). Our family really liked the food and the value ...you cannot beat. We've been back 6 times since and have recommended many asian friends who have become 'regulars'. Their menu does miss some favourites that we normally order at other chinese restaurants but the Manager just told us to order in advance and he can accommodate us. We have been placing our special orders and the Chef has yet to disappoint. We get huge portions of tasty food and the dining room is clean and relatively spacious. The service is outstanding for a chinese restaurant. It does get very busy so it is best to book a table in advance. They have a good mix of authentic and 'westernized' chinese food. All of which I enjoy eating.

I don't come here for the Pho and have never tried it. However, I am a big fan of the combination dinners and their other standard fare. I have been going to this restaurant for nearly twenty years and I find the food is reliably good. The roll dip, imperial prawn spring roll, crepes, deep-fried wontons, etc...have never disappointed myself or my family. We have taken friends and family to the restaurant and they have all enjoyed the experience and have asked to go back.

Ambiance is not great but it is one step-up from their fluorescent-lit contemporaries. The friendly service can be slow but to be honest...I like what I get so much that I really don't mind and I expect a possible delay. It is a family-run restaurant and is one that I will continue to go to.

False Advertising and Poor Customer Service
Submitted Sunday, July 12, 2009 - 2:52pm [Dine in]

Had breakfast with my family this morning at Happy King. After about 10 minutes of waiting and trying to flag down a server...we finally got to order. We decided to order a breakfast special that was listed in a plexi-glass stand (that stood on the table). It was for "Spam" and eggs with toast. Along with the plate of food you would get a bowl of noodles and a choice of coffee, tea or soft drink. When the server took our order down, she said that the soft drink that we requested would cost an extra 0.50. That didn't make any sense because the ad for the special said it came free (no mention of extra charge). The server argued saying that was the policy despite what the ad said. We then asked to speak to the Manager. During that time, we also spoke to another Server who told us that was the restaurant's policy despite what is advertised. At the end of our meal, the Manager finally appeared at the til and we went to speak with her. She unabashedly argued that they always charged 0.50 for a cold drink order despite what the ad says. She insisted on leaving the charge on the bill and didn't seem to care about customer service or what others thought around her. For us, paying the 0.50 was not a burden but ethically, it is not right to advertise something that you aren't getting.
