Save your Dine Out Dollars
Submitted Thursday, January 24, 2013 - 10:42pm [Dine in]

Tried this place on a Tuesday and have a few things to share for your consideration before you go here. First, you will need 2.5 hours for dinner. Second you will not get all of the food you are even though it is a set three course dinner. Third, you will not get all of your change. Fourth you will be charged for salad instead of fries when the website clearly states it is included as an option to fries. Fifth, management will not respond to your complaint. In fairness the live music was great and the food we did get was tasty but not so amazing it was worth 2.5 hours of waiting. Although 25 minutes was us just waiting for the bill after requesting it. Did I mention there was only two tables or so in the restaurant.....Unless you love the band playing go elsewhere.

We buy our coffee beans here every week. The store owner is always delighted to see us and hops up with a smile to get us our usual order. There is an eclectic collection of coffee/tea related gift-ware to purchase. It is not a fancy place to take a date but you won't find better coffee or more friendly service anywhere else. It is a community treasure.

Not so cheap and delicious
Submitted Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 7:26pm [Dine in]

Based on the recommendation in the Vancouver Sun as a cheap and delicious place in Vancouver we decided to try this place out. We were shown to a table as the people before us were leaving- meaning they never wiped down our table. We ordered the Mojo fries which were supposed to come with a dipping sauce....but didn't. They were cooked well enough but came in a fast food style basket and no sauce. We were told we could season them with the chili salt on the table.....okay.

Our entrees were both butter chicken with Naan and at 12.95- not really a steal pricewise. They tasted alright but there was more sauce than anything. I counted five little cubes of chicken in my serving. My companion took her leftovers to go and she was given the container to pack it up herself. A bit of work on presentation and service would go a long way here.

The area to wait for a table is at the back of the restaurant which was odd cause it meant people kept being escorted past us and then just standing around at the back near our table. The waitstaff wander around a lot but don't really check on you and seem unsure of what to do.

It was pretty busy and all the patrons seemed to know each other so it must be popular with some people but don't go looking for cheap or delicious. With no drinks for two people the bill was $40.00.

We both spent the rest of the night and most of today with an uncomfortable feeling in our stomachs and the leftovers met the garbage can about 30 minutes after our meal when we started to feel gross. Keep going East on Kingsway...Saffron is worth crossing the border into Burnaby for what I guess the Sun would consider Cheap and Delicious.

3 strikes you're out!
Submitted Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 7:04pm [Dine in]

We tried so hard to like this place and have been three times since it opened. I understand it is just opening and will have kinks to work out which is why we kept trying again. We would say to ourselves let's try again.....I am sure it has improved since last time....only to discover we were wrong. Today's experience takes the cake and I am not even sure where to start.

This is a place that bills itself as a sportsbar so we went to watch the Canucks game.(note-we had to ask for the sound to the game to be turned on-Sportsbar?) I ordered a beer and 30 minutes later when I had a chance to ask where it I learned it hadn't been ordered and shortly appeared. (Strike 1) With my beer we had ordered the Spinach Dip. We were told it was on its way twice...then sent someone to look for it. Then it arrived....40 minutes after ordering and we were told at that point that the first one had been burnt. Fine, tell us that 20 minutes ago and I would have been understanding.( Strike 2) Then we ordered entrees, the homemade Mac and Cheese. They arrived and plate was super hot so I ate the salad first as did my companion. When I tucked into the Mac and cheese I realized the ramekin was cold as was the pasta- to its core. Same with my companion....back to the kitchen.(Strike 3). You will notice so far there is no offer of anything being comped or taken care of by the server. When we did get hot Mac and Cheese we were told 25% off the total bill. That sort of placated us........and maybe would have done more if the following other experience hadn't already added to our frustration:

This is a large restaurant and at the time there were about five tables in use and the whole back corner of the restaurant empty. The manager/owner chose to have an interview for a line cook at the table behind us as the hockey game was starting. The volume on the TV's behind us wasn't on so we could hear the entire interview. The owner talked down her own restaurant and the interviewee slammed the food all within very easy earshot. As they walked away from the table for a tour of the kitchen the table behind us asked how we thought the interview went-we all shared a laugh. It was SOOOO awkward. Then she hired the guy....we could understand since she explained that one line cook was currently also the dishwasher. We also learned the bartender is moody(which we saw demonstrated when he spoke to the waitstaff) and the restaurant runs out of ingredients regularly.(THEY NEED HELP!) But why they had the interview right there in a half empty restaurant blows my mind.

We get the bill only to learn that 25% off the entire bill meant only the food bill and the beer I waited 30 minutes for had no discount. No offer of free dessert although the merits of dessert there were explained to us in much detail. We saved $7.22 which was less than our 40 minute appetizer or our drinks. Comping something would have been way better!

We were so uncomfortable we had to leave during the second period. It obviously wasn't our night to eat or drink there. I wish them luck in their endeavor but they have just lost a couple potential regulars in us by not handling the situation properly from the beginning.

I will say that the food we had once it was served and hot was pretty good, and was the only saving grace of a horrible dining experience.

Lovely Friday Meal
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 4:02pm [Dine in]

I was a little hesitant at first glance of the menu but was pleasantly surprised by the meal. Our server was great and fixed drinks that weren't on the cocktail menu at our request.

I had the pork of the day and my partner had the duck. Both meals were beautifully presented and delicious although my porkchop was 40% fat that had to be trimmed off.

The dessert special was advertised as a homemade stuffed crepe with local cherries but would take 20 minutes as it was made fresh. Our strategy was to order the almond cake and share that while we waited for the special dessert. When it arrived we realized it was more a cherry upside down cake baked in a skillet. It reminded me of dessert at guide camp and the cherries hadn't been pitted and so we were pretty disappointed in the 'special' dessert.

Overall the ambiance was great, it was quiet and comfrotable and the food was delicious.

a true taste of Japan
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 3:53pm [Dine in]

Sushi isn't on every menu in Japan and neither will you find it here. This was a true taste of the Japan I remember. Great attentive service. Delicious simple food that are a bit of mix and match.

I had the Washu Hamburg and didn't need to turn it into the set meal to be full. So for 6.50 dinner was more than satisfying:)

Instead of mints you get pocky to end your meal!

It is a cute little place that has a great little Japanese menu that tastes like Japan.

mmmm...polenta balls!
Submitted Monday, January 21, 2008 - 5:47pm [Dine in]

I was here for a big Birthday party on a weekend. We had a pre-arranged menu of platters. The food was fantastic. The polenta balls are unbelievable and have a sauce that was divine. We were stuffed by the end of the night and the dessert had to be forced down but was worth the work.

Beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, great food. I will be sure to go back.

A surprising gem
Submitted Thursday, May 24, 2007 - 3:56pm [Dine in]

Constantly hearing this place mentioned on the TEAM 1040 I decided to drag my friends along to try it out. I was really pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The decor is not fabulous but the food was fantastic. The bread basket was really fresh and came with homemade cheese and yummy olives. My whole group ordered different things and everyone was totally satisfied. We mostly ordered off of the tapas menu and added the sides for 1.95 which was a great deal. I had the flaming chorizo which was great.

The wine was delicious and the desserts were memorable. Probably the best rice pudding I have ever had. The service is casual so I wouldn't go if you were in a rush but we felt completely comfortable staying for almost three hours. I had wine, full meal, dessert , tax and tip for $25.00.

Can't wait to go back.

Pleasantly surprised
Submitted Friday, April 20, 2007 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

I really enjoyed my dinner here. We had five dishes plus rice and it amply fed our group of five plus room for desert! Service was good but they stopped refilling water after main plates were cleared. Atmosphere was good, it was easy to talk, and it felt private which is a bonus. I highly recommend the calamari and the sambal green beans. It wasn't too expensive $25.00/person for five dishes, desert and cocktails so no complaints here. I would happily go back.

Yum, Yum , Fast and Cheap
Submitted Friday, March 30, 2007 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

We decided to try this place last week, especially since there is a two for one coupon in the Straight. The decor is really sleek and clean and the service is fast. The waiters are very attentive and efficient. We had chicken curry and steamed vegetables with rice and the bill was $15.00 with the coupon for both of us. Everything was fresh, hot and tasty. It was a better overall experience than the Thai House where we usually go but the main appeal over the Thai house is that they take Debit!

We will definitely be regulars.

Great Dine Out Deal
Submitted Monday, January 29, 2007 - 10:36am [Dine in]

A few friends and I chose this place off of the $15.00 dine out list because we thought it maybe seemed to be in the wrong category. We really felt we got a great deal as the food was certainly worth the $25.00 dine out price. We had a fabulous Squash soup and then between the three of us there was the venison, chicken and scallop meals. We all loved our meals and desert too although we could have used slightly larger desert portions. Apparently the coffee was also amazing.

The atmosphere was pleasant, quiet, well decorated and clean. The bathrooms are beautiful and there is cream and hairspray etc in the washrooms which is a nice touch.

Service was efficient but our waitress when asked for a wine recommendation froze and for a restaurant named UnWine'd I think the the waitstaff should have a bit more wine training. But if you can overlook that it is a great deal.

All in all I recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly!

Please rinse the lettuce
Submitted Friday, November 25, 2005 - 11:39am [Dine in]

This place has pretty good atmosphere and a decent menu. I tried some of my friends 'jerked'items and it was ll pretty tasty. I however oredered the salmon salad and while I have no complaints about the salmon I do not appreciate the taste of bagged lettuce in my dinner when I am at a restaurant. If I want old bag lettuce Iw ould stay home. Other than that a good time was had by all and the bread and drinks were great.

This is a nice restaurant with good decor and a solid menu. The menu is creative and delicious. I have been in a large group and small group and everyone always finds something they like. The service is a bit slow but the peanut butter creme brulee makes up for it. They have some great deals for dessert and coffee and the lounge in the back is a nice place for a drink if it isnt game night.

This is certainly a hidden treasure in South Vancouver. They have a great set course deal and it is a great place to go with friends or visiting relatives. I have never had something I did not like and the portions are huge. It is a quality dining experience.

Submitted Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 3:54pm [Dine in]

Overall this was a nice restaurant. The menu is lacking a bit of diection as we were not entirely sure what the theme was. The food was good and portion size was good. The really strange thing was that it was 7:30 on a Thursday night and we were the only table in the restaurant which was a bit uncomfortable. I would go back just for the sangria.

Great atmosphere!
Submitted Friday, September 23, 2005 - 12:04pm [Dine in]

I went with a group and we were super happy with the food and atmosphere/decor. Make a reservation! It is a small place and if we hadn't we would have never got a table even if we waited. They won't seperate bills and add 15% to groups of 5 or more. Between the 6 of us we tried the Seafood Paella, Paprika and MAsala Fries, Chicken Skewers, ceviche and hot pot. The Hot Pot was the least favourite while the ceviche, chicken and paella were big hits. We would all definitely go again. But not regualarly as it was a bit pricey at $20/person without drinks. But is was a great place to chat and we did not feel rushed out even though it was busy.
