We went with a group of 4, and by far it was the best service we have ever received at a Vancouver restaurant. I highly recommend the West Tasting Menu - it's a wonderful medley of some of the best dishes they have to offer. We asked for a substitution with our main dish, which they happily obliged, and it was the best Beef Tenderloin I have ever had. I know it can be costly, but I also recommend being adventurous with the selection of wines available. A few of us also indulged in the Scotches they had available, great variety as well.
I would definitely return, it was well worth it! I know why people consider it the best restaurant in Vancouver.

We dined at Al Porto with a larger-ish group (8 ppl or so) for Dine Out Vancouver. Although the restaurant wasn't terribly busy, our waiter was impatient, inattentive and flat out rude. He seemed so annoyed that he even had to wait on our table. And when he came to tell us that some of the listed specials on the fixed menu were not available at the time, he didn't apologize or give an explanation, he merely told us that it was our bad luck that we couldn't have them.
We couldn't figure out what we had done to be treated so poorly, because we are certainly not a group of people that would leave a bad tip or even dine and dash! We are also avid foodies, always looking for new exciting restaurants to dine at. We enjoy Dine Out Vancouver because (normally) it's a chance for restaurants to showcase themselves. Unfortunately, Al Porto demonstrated itself to have absolutely terrible service, mediocre ambiance, and an uninviting atmosphere.
I don't recommend Al Porto, and strongly encourage others to eat elsewhere.
