Not bad....but not great
Submitted Monday, August 15, 2011 - 8:12pm [Dine in]

Went there today with some family members for the first time. The chicken and vegetable noodle soup and the radish cake were the standouts both in flavor and size of the dishes. The pan fried dumplings (woh-teep for you Cantonese speakers) and deep fried pork soup noodle were pretty standard. What was surprisingly disappointing were the XLBs. We all found them to be too salty. I probably would have given this place 3.5 for the food if they had a choice. The XLBs dragged the food down from a 4 though. For XLBs I would have to give the nod to Shanghai River, but everything else was pretty good here. Ambiance is better at Shanghai River as well.

How does this place survive?
Submitted Saturday, October 2, 2010 - 6:31pm [Dine in]

I had been warned about this place before, but I went with a couple colleagues who said that the quality has improved in the last few months. It was lunchtime and the restaurant was fairly full. It was a fairly cold day and we were on a tight schedule, so we all decided to get tempura udon. The tempura was actually pretty good (prawns were large) and the batter crispy. The noodles and soap base were totally horrible as it had a mild soapy flavor to it....uggh.... As for the service, you are no better off than going to Hon's....Never ever again...

Gone downhill a bit...well except the prices

This place was pretty good before, but over the last few months the size of some of the dishes have gotten smaller and the prices have gone up. Last time I went there I ordered a baked fish over rice dish. The flavor was a little on the bland side. Service is always hit and miss here. I used to go here 3 times of month since it is so close by. Nowadays I go there once every 2 or 3 months if we are too lazy to cook or in a hurry

just okay

Went there today for lunch with the Mrs. The Mrs. ordered lunch Box A (chicken teriyaki, gyoza, dynamite roll, gomae, etc.). There was a little too much sauce on the chicken teriyaki. The gyoza didn't taste very good. The dynamite roll was fairly small, but the favor was decent.

I ordered the Box C (beef teriyaki, california roll, misc sushi, chicken karaage). The beef teriyaki and karaage were pretty standard stuff. The california roll was quite small and had too much mayo. The sushi tasted quite fresh, however was a little warmer than I like it. If I could give the restaurant a 2.5 for food I would have given them that rather than a 2.

Service and ambiance were pretty solid. I may consider going back to try some different items.

This was the first visit to Tandoori Kona for the wife and I. During our dinner we ordered the butter chicken (which many people had recommended previously) and Aloo Palak (vegetarian dish). I agree with many others here that the butter chicken very yummy. The aloo palak was pretty good as well. Having the naan, rice and poppadum included as part of the meal was really great value for $12. Naan was light and perfect with the sauces. My wife especially liked that the sauces weren't salty. Service was friendly and respectful. Very good first experience at Tandoori Kona and will be going back.

Went there for dinner tonight (Tuesday) with my better half. We both ordered off the dinner special menu. My wife ordered the chicken souvlaki and I ordered the roast lamb. Portions we quite big and the food itself was quite tasty and well prepared. The ambiance is better than your average Greek Restaurant. Our server was pleasant/attentive but not pushy ... hard to find nowadays. Price for the dinner specials were $13.99... in my opinion, worth it for the service, ambiance and food.... I believe they are also are in the entertainment book (but the dinner specials aren't included)... Will be going back

Not Bad
Submitted Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

Went to Sushi Town with an out-of-town friend (who happened to go there about 6 times in 2 1/2 weeks). We ordered the Awesome Roll, chopped scallop roll, Toro sashimi and 1/2 order of Spicy Tuna. We received the Toro first. By appearance it does seem big, but in reality it is standard size once you get past the huge mound daikon (white radish). The Toro itself was a little frozen...so i'd have to say it was a 2.5/5. The Awesome Roll was next and I must say it has a great variety of flavor 5/5. The chopped scallop roll was next. The scallop was diced to oblivion and the roll itself was tiny 1/5. 1/2 order of Spicy Tuna sashimi was next. The size of this dish was quite impressive and the flavour was decent too, 3.5/5 for good value. Since we went there at almost 2pm on a Monday, service was decent. Would go back there just for the Awesome Roll and maybe the Spicy Tuna.

I went there with two other people on a Sunday night. We ordered the XLBs X 2, the beef and broccoli, pan fried pork buns and the beef wrap. The XLBs were very good with the most juices of any XLBs i've had. My mom actually squirted juice all over her shirt. They are the best i've had since Green Village shut its doors. The rest of the food was pretty solid as well and for $30 for 3 people which includes tax and tip you just can't go wrong with that. Service is decent considering how busy it is and for the price.

Pretty good
Submitted Saturday, May 10, 2008 - 5:07pm [Dine in]

Went to Vera's for the first time yesterday night. I had the BBQ burger with fries and the wife had Veggie Burger and sweet potato fries. My burger and fries were very good. The beef tasted fresh. My wife thought the Veggie burger was just alright though. My only complaint was the fact that the guy handling the cash was also handling the toasting of the buns...not exactly food safe. The meal was very filling and worth the $22 between the both of us.

Went there today with the parents and the inlaws to celebrate an early mother's day. The food quality are above average but so was the prices. The squab was fairly good, but the congee is better at Ho Yuen Kee on Fraser. The service isn't as good as Kirin on Cambie, but again better than your average dim sum restaurant. The table we sat on was fairly spacious, which you can't say about most other Chinese Restaurants. If they had an overall rating of 3.5 I would have rated it as such.

Thai House Restaurant4940 No. 3 Road, #129, Richmond
Pleasantly surprised
Submitted Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 11:47pm [Dine in]

I wasn't particularly looking forward to eating here because I am not a huge fan of Thai food and I have heard the downtown location is pretty bad. The wife and I had some gift cards that needed using so we decided to look up the Thai House that had the best reviews and it was the Richmond one. Service was attentive as the restaurant was only 30-35% full on a Saturday during lunch time. We ordered the spicy green beans, Red Curry Seafood (forgot the name of it but it was one of the day's specials) and two bowls of the coconut rice. The beans were pretty good but the Red Curry with coconut seafood dish was simply amazing....We ate up everything even though my wife isn't a big eater. The prices are a little higher than what I would usually pay for a meal but the seafood dish really made up for it. Service was pretty good as well.

Good japanese food
Submitted Sunday, February 10, 2008 - 9:48pm [Dine in]

I have gone to this Japanese restaurant many many times and is my favorite restaurant. There is nothing fancy on the menu, but the food is good quality and the prices are reasonable. The wife and I went there for lunch today and had bento boxes. The sashimi in her bento box tasted very good and the chicken terriyaki is always yummy (not too much sauce and crispy skin). I don't think you can find better bento boxes for the price. Unagi rolls and chopped scallop rolls are our favorites. The chopped scallop they use are plump in size. Tempura udon is another favorite of mine. Service is almost always very pleasant even when they are busy, which is most of the time.

Went to this place for lunch today with the wife. I had the Miso chicken meal (which comes with miso soup and rice) and a Gomae. The wife ordered a salmon and egg over rice bowl, which also came with miso soup. Both were entrees were quite flavorful without being too strong on the saltiness. The place was full and for good reason. Good quality food for the amount you pay. Including tax and tip lunch was $20 for both of us. Service was also solid. Good experience.

Very good gourmet pizza
Submitted Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 8:05pm [Dine in]

I had been reading such good things about this pizza place that I just had to try it. I have driven to this place from Marpole (20 minutes each way will my lead foot) on three occasions in the last month or so. This is definitely something out of the ordinary from the average pizza joint. The Japanese and the West Coast are fabulous. I have also tried the Italian and the Caveman, which are both a little on the salty side but given that those pizzas are mostly meat toppings, it is expected -- but they are both good still. Crust is light and good amount of toppings. I am sure that the pizzas would taste even better if eaten shortly after it comes out of the oven.

Watch how much they charge you!
Submitted Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 7:21pm [Dine in]

Went there on a few occassions. Food was decent everytime. On my last occassion I went with the wife and her sister. My wife happened to order water and they decided to bring her bottled water without even asking...I ordered the special which was decent. My wife ordered a taco salad which was fairly tasty but nothing extraordinary. As I was paying for the bill I was watching the lady ring in the items and noticed that she may have been overcharging for my wife's salad. When I asked her "Is that right?", she said "Yes it is". Upon talking to my wife after we left, we had realized she did overcharge us. My honest opinion is that she overcharged on purpose.
