A group of us decided to try out Capone's for dinner and drinks:
- Ambiance: Good. Live Jazz band playing. Music isn't so loud that it drowns out conversation. Kitchen is open and occasionally scents of fish and spices waft across your table. Appetizing.
- Drinks: Nice martini menu but the pricing is outrageous in spite of the fact they are all served as doubles.
- Food: Here's where things really start going downhill. The portion sizes are small. Don't expect to get full here. In fact, you may want to have a snack before coming here. I had the appetizer Navajo bread. Nice flavour in this but the serving is far too small to justify the price. Followed this up with the spaghetti bolognese with meatballs. Bland! No flavour whatsoever. The meatballs were cold. The spaghetti lukewarm. A couple of friends are also served cold food. Flavour is not there. We're all hungry and just finish it off anyways. Disappointing.
- Value: Martinis are $10+. Appetizers are $10-18. Entrees are $20+. The portion sizes and quality of food don't justify the price. Eat first.
- Service: From bad to worse. We were helped in fifteen to twenty minute intervals. The restaurant was NOT to capacity. We spent twenty minutes waiting for our first round of drinks. A member of our party sends his lasagna back because it's too cold. The chef re-cooks it. Puts it on the counter under the heat lamp for the server to pick up. The server is nowhere to be found. When the server appears fifteen minutes later, the cook takes the plate back because he realizes the food is cold again. Inevitably, the lasagna came back a half hour later. Unacceptable. I have to flag down the hostess twice because once again our server has gone M.I.A.
- Icing on the Cake: I use my tip to reflect my disappointment with the food and service experience. I check my credit card statement this morning and come to find that my bill has been topped by 10% after the fact. A slap in the face.
- Conflusion: I would recommend avoiding this place unless you really enjoy jazz and have already had dinner. The dining experience was only memorable for how bad it was. It's a shame because the ambiance is actually nice. But the rest of the experience fails to deliver on every point.
