Who the Hell Likes This?
Submitted Friday, August 29, 2008 - 1:22pm [Dine in]

Ok, I don't know who the idiots are that voted this place the best burger in Vancouver. It doesn't even merit a runner up position. We've tried this place 3 different times over about a year. As so many people rave about it, we tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. But 3 chances are all they get. 3 times terrible. Service is rude and unhelpful.
The burgers are packed full of filler, I'm assuming bread crumbs, and cheap meat. It taste terrible. Proves that just being fresh isnt all it takes for good tasting meat. The buns are cheap generic buns, think that being a chain they could actually get a quality bun, I think that's almost as important as the meat.
Fries were a greasy soggy mess, very unenjoyable. I really see nothing to like about this place, the prices would be fair, if it was quality, but it is not. They are direct competition with fast food burgers, and I'm not sure they would win that competition either.
Whoever thinks these burgers are good, needs to quit smoking 2 packs a day, and stop drinking a gallon of coffee a day. You clearly have no taste buds left.

Befond Expectations
Submitted Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

Well it's taken a lot longer than a couple of months to re-review this place...not for any fault of their own, just life. I am glad I have finally made a return visit. They clearly have got things going right now.
The service has improved dramatically, very attentive and helpful, but also was very friendly and personable-what I find a huge rarity in this city. We let our server choose our wine for us, and were able to just enjoy the experience.
The aged beef was impressive and delicious. Presentation here is impeccable, and it is a truly fine dining experience. And I still love the room, nice and clean...not busy like many restaurants in this city feel they need to be.

Poor for Italian
Submitted Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 2:54pm [Dine in]

The watered down pastas do not make for good Italian. I love Italian food, just as it is the easiest food to make taste good. Yet I make much better pasta at home.
The marinara sauce was very bland and tinny in flavour, and very runny. The bread was dry and bland as well.
There's nothing wrong with the room, but its nothing special either, which considering the lack of food quality there should be something else...there isnt.
It is relatively cheap here, but there are much better Italian joints for not that much more money.

Go For the Games Only!
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:58am [Dine in]

This is simply a terrible bar, and no more. Go here to drink and watch the game for sure-just dont eat anything. The food is sub par bar food, definitely NOT up to our local standards.
The service is terrible, we got our own drinks from the bar all night-seriously, I think the server just chose to ignore us the entire evening. Even when we ordered some food from her, it took almost 45 minutes to get it.
I rate the atmosphere so high, only because we're here on a hockey night and the energy was great. Other than that, I dont think I will ever be here. This is for watching the big games, and nothing else.

Bad Service Ruins it.
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:48am [Dine in]

This is a great location, in a posh neighborhood, but I think they rely too much on that fact. The food is average Vancouver food. Nothing spectacular, especially interesting or out of the ordinary. The service is atrocious. Seriously, this girls IQ must've been unscorable she was so stupid. Try to ask her for wine recommendations, her only response is "I dont know anything about wine." Ok, honesty is good, but she should offer to get another person on staff to help out, or a manager, surely someone there must know something about wine.
Then we tried to order salads to come with our mains-well that was just too confusing for her. We got our salads with our appetizers instead.
It almost seems a standard that any restaurant in a great location had ok food at best, and terrible service. I guess they figure they dont need to invest in these other factors, sadly from how busy they were, I guess they're right.

Total Contentment!
Submitted Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 4:08pm [Dine in]

I was surprised to see how many reviews are alread here for this restaurant. A friend of my wife's had told us about it a couple of weeks ago, and before that have never heard of it. We discovered we had a 2for1 from the Entertainment guide website for it, so we decided to give it a go that same night.
It was a wonderful cozy little room, there were only 2 other tables in while we were there, but it felt nice and intimate, a perfect setting for our romantic little date.
The waitress was stellar, very friendly, and helpful, and seemed to know just when to jump into our conversation. We had the highly recommended Butternut squash fondue as a starter, and considered ordering a second for the next course...it was so amazing rich and creamy with a wonderful sweetness.
I had the Peppercorn Turkey and my wife had a mushroom ravioli. Both absolutely acceptional dishes.
Even though we didnt have any room left, our very persuasive waitress talked us into a corn cake. I never thought of a corn cake before, but it was amazing.
This is a wonderful date restaurant, with spectacular food and friendly service. My wife is already planning our next vist.

I've had enough people rave about this place that I guess my expectations were raised. There was nothing wrong, the calamari, was calamari, the cheesy pasta, was cheesy pasta. The chicken, was chicken.
Everything was standard flavours, nothing disappointing...but I wasn't blown away. This is definitely a good neighborhood restaurant. If you live in the area, sure why not pay it a weeknight visit. But dont, like me, go out of your way to visit here.

Very Good Food
Submitted Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 1:44pm [Dine in]

I've given Montri a 3, but I think is I could I would give it 3 1/2. But it doesn't quite make a 4.
This is definitely the best Thai food experience I have had, the food is quite enjoyable, not just flavourful. I have been to other Thai places where the food had lots of flavour, but not necessarily good flavour. This one very good. I think they have done a decent job of being authentic, but still appealing to the North American palate.
The atmosphere could be a more intimate and comfortable. But again, will easily give up decor and design for good food.
Montri is definitely worth a visit, or two.

A Damn Nice Burger
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

I must say the burgers here, may not be the Best Burger, but they're definitely amongst the best. My burger was juicy, very flavourful and rich. They definitely great points on the food. And the feel of the space is great, nice and kitchy. Sadly the service really pulls it down. Maybe they're going for the fast food/diner service style, but they can still be friendly. Our server was quite rude, and to the point, I understand they're busy and they have a line up, but still...service is very important. Hopefully, she was just having a bad day, or wont be working there much longer. That's the only thing that really soured our experience here.

A Lousy Overpriced Tourist Trap
Submitted Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 5:59pm [Dine in]

Every so often I hear buzz about this place, and it varies from praise to intense hatred. Sadly, when we finally decided to give it a shot, we had an experience closer to hatred.
The place was busier than other restaurants in the area, but you could tell just by looking that most, if not all, of these people weren't local.
The service was just OK. No special attention, or treatment. No carefor customers, no personal touch, nothing. Just take our orders, bring us our food, settle our bill...end of story.
I like to be served by someone who can at least pretend to enjoy what they're doing. If you dont like this job why are you doing it?
The food, now that was the real shocker. You'd think a seafood restaurant would know how to cook fish. Everything was over cooked. We had prawns, and salmon, the prawns were soft & rubbery, and salmon was bone dry. terrible!
On top of the poor quality of the food, it was very expensive...priced closer to fine dining.
Clearly these people target the tourist, gouge them and serve crap, who cares, they'll never be back.
I wish now, I had followed my instincts and not dined here...but again, it's taken about 15 years before I finally decided to give it a try...and it was definitely either 15 years too late, as its gone downhill, or just a visit that never ever should have happened,

Most Romantic Restaurant
Submitted Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 3:39pm [Dine in]

Over last 10 years we have spent 5 Valentines dinners, 3 anniversary dinners and 3 birthday dinners here. The restaurant is very cozy and comfortable, and very intimate. It is the perfect romantic venue. I even proposed here.
The quality of food and service has been consistent over all these years. They've even been cooperative when they changed how they made a dish I loved, they were still able to make it the old way. That was very impressive.
I always get foie gras there, and we also get carpaccio when available.
Had the vennison chop, which was the perfect amount of gaminess, and surprisingly tender. My wife had the free range chicken last time, surprisingly full of flavour.
The service is totally on the ball, our water glasses are never less than 3/4 full. They make amazing wine suggestions.
If you have that someone special you want to take somewhere special, this is the perfect place!

Bad Blockbuster Syndrome
Submitted Friday, March 16, 2007 - 6:50pm [Dine in]

Maybe the same problems that plague big budget movies plagues big budget restaurants. They've spent tons of money on the pretty imagery, design, layout etc, but saved no money for the food or service.
The food here is Earl's food. Its boring, low end, and not very good quality. There is nothing special about the food. Why couldn't they spend the money and hire a real chef and put out some interesting food.
And the service is no different than Cactus Club. They obviously had a ton of money to make a space look really nice. Very similar to some decadent restaurants I've seen in Cali, but there is no substance. Just another Big Budget Action flick with no substance, and bad acting....that's Saltlik in a nutshell.

WHAT? I Can't Hear You!
Submitted Sunday, March 11, 2007 - 1:21pm [Dine in]

Tried this place last night, and way too loud. Bad design for accoustics. We had to yell with our faces right up to each other to talk. The room feels cold, vacant, loud, and empty even with it full.
The food is bunch of meats and cheeses, nothing special here. Cant complain about it, or criticize the preparation, cause they dont really do anything with it.
Obviously this is a Wine Bar, the whole purpose here is to come and drink. Its not about a great time, or enjoying food.
If I were in my late teens or early twenties, I might like this place, but I just like a place now where I can relax and enjoy the company of the people I'm with-and you cant do that here.

Good Food, Ok Service, Cramped Room
Submitted Saturday, March 10, 2007 - 2:18pm [Dine in]

Well, I dont know if its authentic south of the border cuisine, but it's definitely some great flavours, and not the typical mexican restaurant fare. I appreciated that. Service was ok, but not spectacular.

My big complaint with this place is how they pack the people in. I dont know if it's legal to have that many people in such a small space, I guess they need to pack em in like that to make money? I dont know.

But I really dont like it when I keep getting elbowed by the guy sitting at the next table. This is just too close, way to uncomfortable.

Unless they stop seating so many people, or move to a bigger space, I dont think I will be a regular, maybe go at a quiet time, though I dont know if there is one. Place always looks packed.

Great Place, Service Needs Work
Submitted Saturday, March 10, 2007 - 2:07pm [Dine in]

This is an excellent spot to go for drinks and a bite to eat. The food is very good for a pub environment. I had a duck confit that was delicious. You do not often see items like that in a pub. The feel of the room is equally impressive. I love old buildings and that timeless feel. I prefer this to the moderne feel of most new places. This has a coziness to it.
The service on the other hand is lacking. I dont know if its simply they cant find enough staff, or if they purposely keep a low level of staff on to save money. There was 2 serves when we were there, and the place was hopping busy. If they had just 1 more on, it probably would have fixed a lot of the problems of service.
Hopefully, they staff a little better, I think that's all they need to make this a great place.

Love the Feel of Room, Hate All Else
Submitted Saturday, March 10, 2007 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

We've been to Subeez a number of times, mostly because its a great place to be ignored and have a meeting. On the flip side of that, the service is attrocious. It's very difficult to get their attention. If you're not ready when they come by, it could easily be another 10 minutes before you will see them again. They are very skilled at ignoring customers.
The food quality is equal to a low end pub at best. Very greasy and salty. But again, we really dont go there to eat. We will nibble on a few items and have a couple of drinks and thats about it.
So, if you need a spot for a meeting in Yaletown, its good. If you're looking for a good meal and service, stay away.

Mongolie grill is excellent for exactly what it is. It's you play the chef. You get to create your own meal, then they cook it infront of you. It's simple, the room is ok, but suits the environment.
The servies is quick and attentive. I've been back several times. It's a great place to go for a party, or fun with friends.

And I love hot and sour soup...and this one is very hot and very sour. Good Fun!

Not Impressed
Submitted Monday, February 26, 2007 - 1:08pm [Dine in]

I always see the line ups and finally one day, we walked by and it was early enough that we beat the lineup. We decided to take the opportunity and see what brings so many people in. I honestly failed to discover it.
The lamb souvlaki tasted like mutton, and was not very tender.
The kalamari tasted like it any other deepfried squid. A little greasy. Service was too focused on pumping us through-as The Line started forming almost immediately after we arrived.
I guess people see a lineup and thats enough to bring them in.

Good Place for the Poor
Submitted Saturday, February 24, 2007 - 12:08pm [Dine in]

I rember about 15-20 years ago we came here frequently. Recently we went back, more for nostalgia than anything.
I can honestly say it hasn't changed in that time. Really cheap, bland, overcooked pasta (overcooked makes it absorb more water, and makes it more feeling-cheaply) No real flavouring in the sauce.
Nothing wrong with the service, but nothing particulary special about it either. This restaurant is the perfect place for the college kids out on their own for the first time and cant afford to eat at a real restaurant. But for anyone who has developed taste buds and can afford a couple more bucks for dinner, I would recommend not to disappoint yourself here. No matter how low you set your expectations, you will be disappointed.

Nothing Stands Out
Submitted Friday, February 23, 2007 - 3:37pm [Dine in]

Went here during DOV. I think when we didnt order any alcoholic beverages they decided to just pump us through and ignore us. I guess here if you arent drinking you arent important.
The waiter took our orders, our food came. We asked several times for refills on our pops and never got any. I understand they dont make money on pop, but just because we werent drinking tonight doesnt mean ignore us and treat us like crap. For all they know we could be going out and drinking the next night, and we wont be going back to their place now, because they dont treat us well.
You should not treat nondrinkers worse than drinkers. Apart from possibly hurting future business, its just not right.
Food is ok, nothing special. Room is fine. I will not return, there was nothing here to grab my attention other than the lack of attention.
