I am Thai!!!!! I enjoy eating noodles with chopsticks! Isn't it just as much of an assumption to conclude that because you are eating "Thai noodles" you have to be "culturally authentic" by using fork. Get off your moral high horse. if you are Thai as well then chill out you are making me look bad
this place is okay their meat dishes are dreadful and buns look like they came out of a costco bag. The Pizza's arn't bad, but way too much cheese and not enough topping, while service is excellent the food is passable and does not justify the prices. Thier martini list while large are served in very small portions (even though there are standardized sizes I really feel they are cutting corners here). There are places in town that have better food and drinks for better prices. However I think it would be a nice place to go for a romantic dessert and mayber a bottle of red wine
This place has been voted as having best burgers on the island and with good reason, thery are outstanding. They also make some mean armadillo eggs(better than Cafe Mexico) and very crispy and delicious chips and fish. They only downside is they are closed mondays and are only open til 7:30pm
John's place is the restaurant to come to when you have five different people with five different ideas about what they want for dinner. Try their burgers, pasta dishes, lasagna's, features such as a surpiringly decent Thai noodle bowl, chimichangas, Israeli gyros and even vegan burgers. Servers are always friendly and easy going. Plus the free bread and butter is always a deal sealer if you have people with you who are ravenous
This place is definately a western creation. When I asked for my meal without fish sauce the counter person said "No problem" then yelled to the cook "double the salt" when i asked if he was joking he said no and told me thats what they sub in when people request no oyster sauce. Ummmm.......HOW BOUT JUST ADDING SOME MORE SOY SAUCE OR LEMON JUICE!!!! This place is good for a quick bite but is definately a bit of a muck up in its attempt to "westernized" South East Asian Cuisine.
This place may be a favourite for its New York style comfort food, however I found the salad to be bland and uninspiring, and my ravioli with cream sauce thathad so much butter fat in it it began to harden before I even finished my meal. This restaurant needs to scale back the amount of dairy they put in their meals. In my case it drowned out the flavor of the pasta. My dining partner who also ordered a pasta dish agreed about the obscene amount of cream sauce. Service was alright, I wouldn't go back purely because the food didn't have any flavor and certainly could not have been good for my health or my legs.
This restaurant could use some work in the ambiance department, however the food is worth the visit. While perhaps buffet is not everyone's favourite choice (mine included) The selection is great especially for vegetarian. All in all and cheap and yummy place for lunch or dinner
Mediocre service, average food, but unbelievable ambiance. This place need a little reworking, especially with actually training the staff!!! This place needs a bit of a rework if it wants to avoid the same fates of Hunters and SYN. At least SYN had great drink prices.
A trip to this restaurant will will be a memorable experience. The staff is always very very friendly and well experienced. The food is absolutely divine and the ambiance is so funky and cute its a pleasure to eat here.
The Reef while having pretty steep drink prices is the best Carribean restaurant in the city. Curry plates are only $10 and come with a choice of chicken, goat or Ital (veggie), it is served with rice, slaw, mango banana chutney and yogurt. Its a great place for a late lunch as its pretty vacant around 3:00pm. Pluss they ahve introduced with habanero sauce that has a mustard base, it is unbelievable the best hot sauce I have ever tried, just ask for it!
Great place for lunch or tea, fabulous soups and desserts. One of the few places in town that still makes vegetable juices. There is also a wide selection of silkroad teas. If you don't know where to eat, rebar is always a good choice
I was very surprised that a high calibre restaurant such as this were not able to accomodate my vegetarian friend. Their was absolutely nothing edible for her on the menu and when we inquired with the waiter he said he would ask the chef to make a nice vegetable pasta for her. The vegetable pasta sonsisted of nothing more than linguini noodles with peas, and oil and way too much salt. My friend said she was used to somtimes having to make special orders but this had been the worst supstitution he had ever had. My husband was a chef for many years and commented that the ability of a chef to improvise shows his true talents. For meals that start at $20 and up it is not unreasonable to request the chef to accomodate dietary requirements addequetely (somthing Vista 18 is very good at). I would not attend again purely upon this principle
The Mint though being a great places to have some drinks is unfortunatley not a spectacular place to come for dinner. However I would say that one of the highlights of the restaurant is its chiles and chicken/tofu which is very good either way you order it. The tofu especially is well cooked and seasoned as is the chicken. Their cheese and cracker platters however are by far the best feature of this place. While perhaps its difficult to scew up a platter of this nature, The Mint uses some exceptional cheeses and pairs it with some very good breads and crackers. The bad points include first, the music is way too loud, second the meals are overpriced, lastly service can be sketchy uncless you are being served by CJ
Lotus pond by far serves some of the best chinese food in the city. Meat eaters and vegetarians alike enjoy the fabulous lunch buffet which is out of this world. Dinners can run a little pricey like all Chinese food restaurants however the combo plates which offer soup, a springroll, rice, and a set selection of two other dishes are affordable at around $10.00. The ambiance leaves a little to be desired. However the place is always spotless and the staff are incredibly well organized and you are always served quickley even when it becomes very busy.
This place has been growing in popularity in the past year. Having sampled Thai cuisine at most of the Thai restaurants in the city, the food here especially for the price is amazing. Two people can have a full and satisfying meal for under $20!! Rice is included with the curries instead of costing extra and the Phad Thai is sweet, sour and spicy. Great food, best takeaway in the city by far.
People who do not enjoy vegetarian or vegan food will not like this restaurant. It is the local hang out for the UVIC's Vegan society. You are also sure to meet an array of different sorts of people who go there from artists and hippies to college students and middle aged office workers. The food itself is a little over priced and I often feel heavy after I leave. The key is to target which items are a good deal here. *Their soups, at under 4.00 are generally quite good *their baked goods especially the muffins, I dare you to find better muffins in town than these
The only japanese restaurant in town to use brown rice. It's extensive menu provieds more then the usual run of the mill selections of tofu dishes (perfect for vegetarians). Thier miso soup is less salty than most other japanese restaurants and is loaded with vegetables. The way that waitresses were conversing with customers it appears to have a very steady cientele of regulars. I would definately try this place again the food was fantastic. My only complaint was of the server who was very slow and not very friendly, however she was the only waitress there that night and appeared to be quite pregnant so i give her a break on that one.
This restuarant appears to be a favorite of many in the city. The ambiance is nice and it can accomodate larger parties pretty well. Their salads are quite good. the one bad comment I could make is that they use way, way to much oil in their food. Their yam fries are mushy and theirpastas are over oily as are some of their appetizers, all in all though its not a bad place to grab a bite
The atmosphere is fun loving and the staff are always friendly, they also have "green stuff" that special fusion of spicy green peppers and whatever else that makes it taste so good. However I find the food comes in rather small portions which is unusual for a breakfast style diner, the hash browns are unimaginative and their scrambled eggs though delicious looked pitifully small on my plate. I would go If someone asked me to but it would not be my first choice for breakfast Shine and Lady Marmalade serve very good breakfasts with excellent portions. However this diner is a favorite in town and it is worth a visit to judge for oneself
Firstly I don't need to be bombarded with a television screen while I eat my meal I can do that at home. this place is typical of the the low quality western slop we white folk like to call food. A corporate chain infusing poor taste with middle class mediocre food tastes. Service was passable food was bland and the interior ambiance made me feel like I was in a really posh airport lounge (which i suppose is not necessarily a bad thing). There are far superior restuaurants in the city that are locally owned such as fifth street, the tapas bar and vista 18. Even Earls does a better job than this
