Harambe Ethiopian Restaurant2149 Commercial Street, Vancouver
I really like this place!
Submitted Wednesday, August 6, 2008 - 11:24pm [Dine in]

Before eating here, I'd only had Ethiopian once, several years ago, and I didn't like it and never tried it again. Until tonight, when I decided to give it another shot.

We ordered a chicken dish and a lamb dish. The chicken was similar to an Indian dish but the injera bread complemented it perfectly - it was delicious. However, the lamb was not as described on the menu and was not good. Very chewy and not flavorful. But the chicken was SO good that I would go back and try other things on the menu.

The waitress was sweet but once we got the food we had to ask for more water when we ran out. She was the only waitress for the whole restaurant.

Foe 2 entrees we paid only a total of $23. Not bad for a filling dinner!

We stumbled into this place not knowing what to expect. They gave us a sample of their hot chai which was out of this world. We ordered a shake that was also really delicious.

My bf couldn't agree on which wrap to split, so they made a wrap half-and-half for us. It was good but not outstanding - but I would like to try some other varieties to see if they are better.
The lentil soup that came with is was absolutely delicious. Splitting one wrap was enough for both of us and was something like $11.

The servers were friendly and nice. I would go back again.

The decor is very interesting and pretty, but if you don't like sitting in anything other than normal chairs, beware.

I also think this would be a great place for vegans/veggies.

Just another felafel/kebab shop...
Submitted Wednesday, August 6, 2008 - 7:19pm [Dine in]

I was so excited to eat some Lebanese food before I got to Nuba, then saw it was just a little felafel shop run by a couple young white kids. :) It didn't seem like anything expecially Lebanese. The plate I got was tasty and fresh but not much different than any other kebab shop. Seating was very limited.
Staff was courteous and friendly.

Ok, but pricey

We thought we'd try this out as we'd never really had African food before. The dishes we got were like Indian food - my chicken dish was exactly like chicken vindaloo. Maybe that is how African food is - I'm not sure... but we were expecting something much different.. .so be aware.

Our dishes were tasty but not outstanding, which I expected for the price.

The weirdest thing is that "Simba", the owner/chef or whatever, was standing around the whole time and going from table to table--which you'd think was really nice -- but he was just sort of mumbling and very unfriendly. He overheard my boyfriend say he didn't think the hot sauce was very hot, so Simba went and brought out some hotter sauces. Again, that seems like a courteous thing to do - but he did it without a smile and barely a word. Very strange, and it made us a bit uncomfortable.

Some people tried to come in the restaurant right before closing and he basically yelled at them to leave and pointed at this watch!! I couldn't believe it! He also went out to put up the "Closed" sign to make sure no one else came in.

The food was definitely tasty, but not outstanding; I wouldn't go back.

Worst Indian I can remember

I got the chicken biryani and it was so incredibly bland, even after telling the waitress we wanted it spicy. I've never gotten bad biryani before. Also got an appetizer of breaded veggies that was ok. The waitress rushed us and wasn't very pleasant. I was mad at myself for wasting my hunger on this place!! Would not go again.
