James Street Cafe & Grill3819 Canada Way, Burnaby
There are better places to have a meal.
Submitted Sunday, March 10, 2013 - 10:53pm [Dine in]

A small group of us went here for dinner. Sometimes at a restaurant the service is bad and sometimes the food is bad. However, at James Street Café on this particular evening, both the food and the service were very bad. When the food arrived, I asked for extra napkins and by the time we left was still waiting for them. The food was cold and the beef was very tough. Some pieces of the meat were undercooked. Other people in our party said the meat smelled bad but I didn’t notice this myself. When the bill came the waiter insisted we must select 15 % or 20 % for the tip. Personally, I don’t think the servers or the kitchen staff deserved any tip but we gave 15 % as that was the mandatory minimum. Would not return here again. There are many nicer establishments in this city with better food and much better service.

Not so good service.

We thought we'd try this place out so we went there one Friday night. The young lady who seated us seemed like she was doing us a big favour. She appeared very rude although I'm sure she didn't mean to.

Our server was totally disengaged and did not appear to enjoy what he was doing at all. After placing our order, we noticed that other tables, including the one right beside us, were given a complimentary dish to start on while they wait for their food. Our server did not extend the same courtesy to us. We waited a very long time for our meal. The food was good but not spectacular. I've had much better Indian food in this city.

The service was horrible. Not once did our server check up on us. We needed more naan but the server never came so we managed without. He did not even check if our water needed to be refilled. The other servers seemed much more attentive, checking up on their tables and being friendly to the customers. When he brought the bill, I mentioned to our server that the food was good but I was very disappointed in the service, or lack thereof. He apologized and started making excuses by saying on Friday and Saturday nights they're very busy (the small restaurant was only half full and I counted at least four servers), if I came on a less busy night, I'd get better service. He also said they've advertised for more servers but no one is applying. I personally don't care if it's a busy night or if they have staffing issues, the service wasn't just slow it was unacceptable as our server was so disengaged. I would not return here again.

I love this little place!!

This place is amazing. The food is delicious, the portions are generous and the service is exceptional. Furthermore, the prices are very reasonable. I called ahead for a pick-up order and when i got there my order was prepared and all ready to go. Soup, salad, and even napkins and chopsticks were all in the bag so i could begin eating right away when I got my order home. The owners are so welcoming and friendly it feels like home. This has definitely become one of my favourite restaurants.

Very inconsistent service
Submitted Wednesday, July 27, 2011 - 9:14am [Dine in]

I have been to this establishment a few times (due to convenience) and the service has been very inconsistent. Some of the times it was acceptable and some of the times it was really bad. Once an employee wanted to seat us at a small dark table near the bar. We asked for a nicer table. We noticed this guy was trying to seat everyone at that little dark table and everyone asked for another seating except for this elderly couple who just sat at that small dark table. The restaurant was not busy and there were lots of tables available. That same day, during my meal, I paused to talk with the person I was dining with and the server comes from BEHIND me and picks up my plate. I was still eating. My napkin was not in the plate to indicate that I was finished. She did not even ask if I was done. She just came up from behind me so I couldn't see her and picked up my plate. I thought this was very rude.

A disappointment
Submitted Friday, September 4, 2009 - 9:52am [Dine in]

I've passed Shagun Sweets in Burnaby many times so thought i'd finally give their Indian Sweets a try. I was very disappointed. I bought some higher priced sweets and some lower priced sweets but my order was weighed together and I was charged the higher price per pound for everything. After I paid for my purchase and was walking back to my car I counted the change and realized she rounded the total up to the shop's benefit and had not given me my full change. If they are going to round off the amount to avoid dealing with small change, they should round down to the customer's benefit. When i got home I tried the Indian Sweets and found that they are only so-so. They don't taste as fresh or as good and are way overpriced. The service also left a lot to be desired.

New Novelty Restaurant & Sweets6669 Fraser St, Vancouver
Best Indian Sweets in the City!!
Submitted Friday, September 4, 2009 - 9:38am [Dine in]

I've only tried New Novelty's sweets and they are superb. They are very reasonably priced, always fresh, and taste so much better than those at other sweet shops. Everytime I'm in the area I buy a box of sweets to go and share. I've tried a lot of Indian Sweet Shops and I'm convinced that New Novelty is one of the best in the city.
