Pretty Happy Here
Submitted Sunday, February 13, 2011 - 9:22pm [Dine in]

First time back here since the renovation. It was busy but we did get a table right away. I was in the mood for comfort food so ordered the grilled cheese- big smile, it was great. Lots of cheese plus some extras that made all the difference. You have to try it. The salads were also a hit. Our server was exactly right! Fun, attentive and not intrusive.

Will definitely be back here. I am not telling you what the extra is in the grilled cheese-be surprised.

Enjoyed it

Wasn't sure what to expect based on other reviews but we were pleasantly surprised. The service was good and the service was just right. The price matched what you would expect in this city so all good here. We had the pizza and it was good fresh-I took the leftover home and very much enjoyed it for lunch the next day. Will go back at some point.

Fifth Time unlucky
Submitted Friday, October 22, 2010 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

This was my 5th visit here and unfortunately the food simply was not good. It was 2:30 Sunday afternoon, the restaurant was about 60% full. My hamburger was overcooked and so dry, I am not a fan of well done meat at all so this disappointed me. I never have thought the food here was anything more than average but it is a good place to visit with friends, generally a good vibe.

The service was very good though so that was a positive.

Oddly enough people at three different tables within hearing of ours complained to their servers about their food and everyone had something different, so maybe the kitchen was having a seriously off day?

The more unhappy thing though was the menu showed the burger plate at $13 but when the bill arrived I was charged $16 with no comment. I debated questioning it then realized I needed to go and did not want to take the time to sort it out. However this is the second restaurant I have been in where the menu price and the bill differed and I did not order any extras or changes at all. Is this sloppiness on the restaurants part?

I did question it in the other restaurant and they adjusted the bill so perhaps the Sandbar would have if I gave them the chance to- who knows?

With the added cost of the HST this type of error makes eating out more complicated-not only is it costing 7%. More but you have to keep sorting out stuff. Time to eat a home I think.

Disappointed
Submitted Friday, September 10, 2010 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

I really hoped that this place would be 4th Avenues answer to Moderne burger but in spite of very good service the food was a let down. I ordered the "standard" plus cheese ( you pay an extra 1.50 for cheese). The burger was quite dry and not very tasty, could barely see the cheese and could not taste it at all. The fries tasted okay but were likely frozen based on the small even cut and the taste. The bun simply does not stand up to the filling so they could try something better for that. You pay an extra .60 for the dipping sauce (I ordered garlic) which arrives in a small tiny cup with about a half teaspoon of sauce. You do get quite a decent size dish of fries for $3.00. So while they have the service factor down right they have a long way to go to get even close to other burger places in town.

Something has changed recently
Submitted Monday, August 2, 2010 - 11:46am [Dine in]

I used to eat lunch here about twice a month. I very much enjoyed the friendly service, the food was consistent and it was a nice break from a busy workday. I went here for lunch about two weeks ago and was surprised to find that all the staff were different from the last time I was here. I am not sure if the ownership has changed or what is going on as there has been no signage or news about this.

While the food still tasted the same the service was strange and trying to say the least. The "hostess" did not speak English at all and basically just shrugged, smiled and walked away. So, I sat at the only seat available at the counter. Eventually, about 15 minutes later the man who seemed to be the server and perhaps manager came over with a menu. I said I know what I want so no menu needed. He walked away? About 5 minutes later the non-English speaking hostess brings me a menu, which I again said - not needed can I please order now? She shrugged and walked away. About 10 minutes later, the man comes back and tries to give me a menu again-I said, I would like to order please, I know what I want. While ordering he interrupted me multiple time with odd questions so in order to ask for a very simple meal and a glass of wine it took six tries before he finally let me finish my order. The men sitting beside me were rolling their eyes and shaking their heads-they had had the same experience. The person who took my order then refused to bring me a glass of wine because he said it had only been in the cooler since the day before so in his opinion it wasn't cold enough. I said it was fine by me I would like to have it anyway. He walked away. Fifteen minutes later I asked again for the glass of wine-he gave me the same story and said he would not serve it because it would ruin the restaurants reputation. I said, no problem I will be fine with it. Ten minutes later he brings the wine and my food arrives across the counter; I had to ask for cutlery.

After finishing my meal (no one came by to ask if I wanted anything else during this time) I then had to stand in a line up for 10 minutes to pay my bill. Eek! Given the number of tourists I see in there lately I wonder what they are thinking. For me, unless I see the old staff back I won't go again.

Does anyone know what the story is? What happened to everyone?

Nice Try but won't be back
Submitted Monday, May 24, 2010 - 9:47am [Dine in]

The room now has a lot of very small tables very close together. The table behind us was one inch from one of the chairs at our table. We had reserved a table for four and the small size meant it was a real challenge to get 4 breakfasts, 2 coffees, 1 juice, 4 glasses of water and one tea on the table. It just felt too crowded and awkward trying to pick up coffee cups etc.

The food was okay, but not outstanding, and the prices are pretty high. While my bennies were pretty close to the same price as many other breakfast places $13, the eggs, toast and bacon two in our party ate were also $13.00. The one above average feature of the bennies was the sauce-you rarely get it done right in a restaurant but they did here. Otherwise everyone reported the food was fine. Our bill for brunch for 4 was over $100.00

The service was average, again for an expensive restaurant it was not quite up to par. While our water glasses were refilled a little too often, I waited a long time for coffee. We arrived before our friends by about ten minutes. In most restaurants the server would have asked if we wanted something to drink [coffee, tea, etc.] while we waited for our friends. All we were offered was water and she did not come back to our table until about 10 minutes after our friends arrived. We were there about 45 minutes before our order was taken, and strangely enough our coffee/tea were not brought immediately but only when the food was served. Again, there was no sign of our server in the interim so we could not ask her to bring our beverages earlier. It was another 30 minutes when our breakfast arrived, so in total it took one hour and 15 minutes to get breakfast.

A second cup of coffee was requested and took 15 minutes to arrive. The coffee and tea are served in exactly the same small cups. While appropriate for tea, I for one, prefer my coffee in a taller container.

There are a lot of excellent places to go for breakfast in Vancouver so we won't be back here. The food and service do not justify the prices.

Maybe it is a curse of the location but Feenies had pretty bad service as well and we thought new owners would improve on that.

Like to Shop Here
Submitted Saturday, April 24, 2010 - 2:20pm [Dine in]

We like to shop here as the selection of many specialty items is great and their prices are by far better than many other 'gourmet' shops. The lasagna they sell in the deli is very good and inexpensive. Not sure about the little cafe area-we did check it out but were not hungry at the time. There was no one manning the counter there and no one eating. I must say the paninis in the display case did not look all that appetizing but I can't comment on the taste.

Overall, a great place to shop for food. The olive oil we like and purchase by the case is $4.00 per bottle less there than the warehouse we used to buy it at-that should give you some idea as to their better price points.

I Like It Here
Submitted Saturday, April 24, 2010 - 2:14pm [Dine in]

I used to drop in for coffee and snacks a lot while at university and still do so once in awhile. I like the buzz in here, you can easily set up your laptop and work away the afternoon if you want to. I have met many friends here over the years and everyone enjoys it. It is plain and simple, but the service is friendly, the food selection for a cofee place decent and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Three Tries is My Limit
Submitted Saturday, April 24, 2010 - 2:04pm [Dine in]

I have tried this restaurant for brunch twice. The food was okay both times but the service was poor both times. It takes much too long to have your order taken, the food delivered to the table and then you don't see your server again until you hunt them down to get the bill. Something about the ambiance is off in that room although I can't really explain it.

When several of us tried it for dinner-well we all left still hungry after paying a rather large bill. We ordered a lot of dishes to share, which came to the table in odd spurts. We sat in between with nothing waiting for the next dish, then 2 came out together. The food was not that good and certainly not worth the amount charged for the dishes. We had to walk up to 4th Avenue to find somewhere to eat before going home.

So, they have had my three tries, and they are out.

As this coffe shop is always full we have only been able to try it once. The coffee was fine and the pastries we had with it were okay too. So often pastries in the coffee shops are dried out but these were not. I recommend it-but be aware it is a very busy spot so you may not be able to get a table.

We don't do that well trying to make reservations as we don't like to plan our meals so far ahead of time. Consequently we have only been able to eat here once as it is always very busy.

I had reserved for a birthday dinner and was able to choose the table we wanted which was great. The service was excellent, just the right amount of attention, we were provided with great explanations of the various foods. The wine pairing advice was perfect, just the right wine with each dish.

The restaurant did get very full while we were there and the noise level was a bit high but it didn't really bother us-we were able to converse quite comfortably. The food portions are pretty hefty and we ended up taking some home with us as it was too delicious to leave behind.

We will be back as soon as we can motivate ourselves to make reservations.

I Enjoy this Restaurant
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 12:00pm [Dine in]

I stop in here for their black bean soup and quesadillas [off the appetiser menu] once in a while. I don't find them overly expensive compared to a lot of other restaurants and also don't expect too much. However, I have always liked the food I have tried and will be happy to continue dropping in once in awhile.

This isn't intended to be an 'authentic' Mexican restaurant-it is basically California style. I do enjoy my visits there and have always had pretty decent service.

I usually have a glass of wine with my food and haven't tried any of the other drinks so can't comment on those.

Disappointed Here
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 11:54am [Dine in]

I tried Joes several times and suspect that they use margarine instead of butter-not a good choice for my taste buds.

The last time I went there I waited 40 minutes for a table, finally got the one I wanted, ordered and had just been served when the hostess came over and said she was moving me to another table. The other table was not in an ideal spot and I did not want to be moved after waiting 40 minutes to get the table I wanted. She insisted that I move and picked up my plate and took it to the other table. I was shocked but had no choice but to move. I realized after that she moved me because 4 young males just walked in looking for a table and she wanted to give them my table.

For the first and only time in my life I did not leave a tip as she was so incredibly rude and moving me like that mid-meal was obnoxious.

I never went back and never will ever.

Fun for Brunch
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 11:48am [Dine in]

I have enjoyed Sophies since it opened for brunch. The amount of food served is a bit overwhelming and usually my plates go back half full but the price is reasonable and the food at breakfast is well done. The only thing I really can't handle at breakfast there is the coffee-ugh! I stick to tea when we eat there.

The sandwiches at lunch are pretty good too. I can't recommend the burgers though as the few times I have tried them they have been overcooked/dry and hard to swallow.

For brunch, especially with a group-it is a great place to go and the decor is of course fun to check out.

Decent Dinner
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 10:36am [Dine in]

We have only been once. It is incredibly hard to get reservations and you have to know you want to go there many days in advance. (Not our best thing all that planning ahead-how on earth do I know I want to eat there so far ahead of time?) Finally after several attempts we get a reservation for 4 at 6:30 for a Friday night. We were told we had to be out within 2 hours though which I don't appreciate hearing from a restaurant. When we are dining with friends we want to be leisurely and enjoy the process and get caught up with each other. They could change that aspect-don't accept a reservation and tell someone they have to get out-if you can't accomdate then don't take the reservation.

The food was good, everyone very much enjoyed what they had and we all had different dishes. The wine list is okay, but not too exciting; I did manage to find something that paired well with my pasta but the choices are limited.

The service was pretty good as well-not excellent but fine. Two of us wanted to try the "family style" but they said the whole table had to have that or we couldn't. No idea why though-why not accomodate what your guests want?

The room is very small and they have crammed the tables in so tightly that you can't really have a private conversation-you inevitably have to hear what is happening right next to you. They might consider removing some of the tables and making it a little nicer atmosphere. The tables are small so 4 people at one made it pretty tight for the plates as things arrived.

Favorite Place for a celebration
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 10:22am [Dine in]

Have been to West many times now and with the exception of the desserts which aren't very good the food is awesome and the cocktails and wine list are excellent.

The bartenders are very entertaining if you opt to eat at the bar and we often do just to chat with them and enjoy a cocktail. I love the Kaffir fling. The bartenders really know how to pair wine with whatever food you choose so I always opt for their recommendation.

We have had good service (only on one occaison was it a little on the slow side) pretty much every time we go there. The food has always been so very good. Just skip the dessert menu (unless you opt for choosing some cheeses which are great); for some reason the desserts have disappointed every time and we don't bother with them anymore.

It is expensive and for us a treat for special celebrations, but we never leave disappointed. Many of our friends also eat there regularly and they love it as much as we do.

Great Lunch Place
Submitted Sunday, April 4, 2010 - 10:13am [Dine in]

Have had lunch here 3 times now. One time during the Olympics it was extremely busy in there, with patrons jumping up and down and yelling at the action on the TVs, yet the service was outstanding. Our server never missed a thing and did it all with a big smile.

I like the pub lunch, there was plenty of cheese, meat and vegs on the platter. The one thing they could have changed was a bit more bread or crackers as there wasn't enough compared to all the cheese and meat. Otherwise it was very enjoyable.

I have had the quesadillas at another time and they were fine, just the right amount of filling and arrived at table warm. Haven't tried the burgers yet but will at another trip as we plan to go back there.

Overall for a mid-price, comfortable lunch spot we quite enjoy it.
