I've been going to Vietnamese restaurants for over 2 decades in Vancouver. Most of the ones I go to have Christmas lights blinking all year round and TVs blairing. (Yes, I know - I go to a lot of cheap places).
Spices is probably the only Vietnamese restaurant that I have been to that has incredible, non-traditional decore. The food is very good. I seem to always order the special beef noodle soup and it has never disappointed me.
The service is sporatic but solid.

This is probably one of my favourite little Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver. The family that owns it are incredibly nice. Food is very good. I almost always order the combo with meat patty and shrimp in sugar cane dish.
I found out about this restaurant when two differend friends recommended it me.
Everything is so fresh! Try some of the fruit shakes or iced coffee on a hot day.

I've been going to Toshi's since they've opened and have traditionally received good service and good food. However, the last couple of times that I have gone this year, the food was okay at best and the service was not what it used to be. The table had to be re-cleaned after we sat down and my girl-friend found a small string of hair in the rolled sushi. (Not that big of a deal, as I have seen worse).
I felt slightly claustophobic in the restaurant as they really pack the customers in like sardines.
If you want a cheap restaurant, don't mind the wait and really want to experience other customers' elbows, this is the place to be!
