Apres-midi Teahouse1 Gaolers Mews, Vancouver
Great Little (New) Place
Submitted Thursday, December 8, 2011 - 10:25pm [Dine in]

I signed up to warn people about an awful tea place (*cough* Adonia), so I'll also give kudos to a great one while I'm at it.

Apres-midi is only about 4 months old, but the ambiance is so serene (yet trendy) that it seems like it's been there forever. Tucked away in a little brick lane in Gastown, this tea house is spacious and stylish, with high walls and pretty lighting. ;)

They offer their tea selection on a sort of pyramid-shaped rack for you to sniff before ordering, but they also let you customize your blends. The teas we've tried are delicious, but the scones are even better! Freshly baked and served with their own unique cream, the savory scones & sweet scones are equally amazing. I don't usually like lemon-anything, but their lemon squares are yummy, too. My friend had cheesecake as well, and that was delicious of course. The price is also on the low side.

Service is IMPECCABLE. The owner and staff are extremely friendly without hovering around or anything. You can tell the owner really loves what he's doing, and has solid plans for adding more to the menu, and improving what's already there. I can't recommend this place enough... It's definitely one of the best places for afternoon tea in downtown Vancouver!

Adonia Tea House2057 West 41st Ave., Vancouver
Definitely Avoid

I've been to Adonia 4 times since they opened, even though, at the end of each meal, my friends and I always say to each other, "Let's never come back." It's always with different friends, sadly, because they'd see the photos and want to try it.

Don't bother -- this is one of the worst tea places in BC.

First off, the place is cramped and dark. As you have your tea, the cranky manager/owner and one waitress basically stand two feet away in the open kitchen(?), chatting or staring at you. That doesn't mean, however, that they're attentive. As you can tell from the other reviews, service is TERRIBLE.

The food and tea are mediocre at best. Bland or over-sugary sweets, dry scones, grocery-store-quality teas. If you're really bent on goign to Kerrisdale, choose from any of the other places! They all have better food and tea. Secret Garden, for example, sometimes has lousy service, too, but at least they don't fail as a tea house.

Most importantly, if you are considering Adonia because of a group-buying deal, AVOID THIS ONE. The place is so small they simply can't handle increased business even if they keep selling vouchers everywhere.

I only purchased 2 because it's half price. Even at HALF PRICE, my friends and I were reluctant to go. Anyway, I called a week before the vouchers expired, and the manager/owner told me they were booked up but would honour all vouchers after expiry. Today, I called to make the reservation, and she denies ever saying so, and said the vouchers are only worth half the face value now. She now says she is being "nice" even to let us use the vouchers at all, and argues in her poor English that there is no way she or any of her staff could have given us misinformation.

How's that for shady business practices?
