A great evening
Submitted Sunday, January 17, 2010 - 6:03pm [Dine in]

Went here last night for an anniversary after having a good experience about a year and half ago and decided to try it again. We ended up really enjoying our meal here and will definitely be coming back again.
The ambiance of the place is very intimate,we had a table near the kitchen.Lots of Buddhist figures and artwork on the walls and low lighting make it good place to go on a date or with friends.

The service was very friendly and casual but helpful and not at all obtrusive. Our waiter gave us good recommendations on some of the wines and described some of his preferred dishes. We ended up ordering quite a feast but thankfully they brought our dishes out one at a time,so our table never got overcrowded.
I'd definitely recommend the Lumpia spring rolls, the smoked sablefish with papaya/peanut salad and my favorite, the kalbi beef ribs.

We didn't leave enough room for dessert but I'm sure its all good.
Anyhow,we'll be back for more!

awesome little tacos
Submitted Tuesday, December 8, 2009 - 7:26pm [Dine in]

Just tried this place out this past weekend and had been anticipating it for a while.Heard that the chef from Flying Tiger was involved and really enjoyed that place so I was pretty eager.
Ambiance is pretty minimal, bar stools and counters.Service is quick and basic, just put in your order from the menu board and they'll bring it along pretty quickly.
I went with the 4 taco meal and had one steak asada with cuke,a chicken mole, pork al pastore and a fish taco. They were all pretty tasty and I especially liked the pork one,it had pineapple in it.The fish also had a fresh salsa that really went well with it.
I was pretty pleased with everything overall. The tacos are smaller than tex mex style but there's lots of interesting fillings to pick from, including vegan if thats your thing.
Thumbs up!

Even better than before
Submitted Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 5:51pm [Dine in]

Went here last night for my partner's b-day and was really impressed by the experience. We had very good service from both the owner and our server. The service was very friendly and attentive, with good recommendations for champagne and an alternative starter to their very delicious onion tart (it was not on the menu that day.)
I had the beef bourguignon and it was very generous in size,it could have used a bit more of the wine broth but thats because it was very tasty and I'm being greedy.
My partner ordered the lamb shank and it was good as well, very tender. And we shared an order of the glazed carrots and in my opinion some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever eaten.
Overall it was a great dining experience and am looking forward to trying them again!

Big portions...
Submitted Thursday, November 5, 2009 - 8:11pm [Dine in]

I'd heard about this place for years and decided to give it a try when I was coming back from hiking the Stawamus chief with a friend and we needed to load up on some protein & carbs.
The atmosphere is what it is,native figures etc...no complaints, except the two seater booths are a little cramped. Service is average and friendly enough.
The two of us ordered burgers with cheddar, bacon and I added mushrooms. Both came nicely done and pretty hefty sized, the fries were crisp and overall we were satiated. We saw a guy eating one of their famous big breakfasts and what looked to be half a loaf of bread toasted!
Came back a month later with my GF at dinner and tried their steak and mushroom pie. I enjoyed this much more and liked the large pieces of steak in it and the biscuit crust. It came with some nice grilled veggies and mash that was solid.
I'll be back to try the breakfast sometime...

Off night in the kitchen?
Submitted Sunday, September 27, 2009 - 4:36pm [Dine in]

I'd read about this place opening up a while back and people raving about it,so 3 of us decided to give it a shot.Any new mexican joints opening in this city is a good thing but I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed by it all.

I had heard about the long waits to get in and sure enough there was a line up out to the street. It moved quite quickly though,so no complaints there. We managed to score a table on the patio and its pretty good for drinks in the summer if you don't mind the drone of Robson behind you.You also get to have everyone in line gawk at your meal...
Service wasn't anything special, pretty indifferent but it was a busy night.

As far as the food is concerned we started with a nice, fresh order of guac and tortillas and tortilla soup, both of which I enjoyed. It was the mains that we ordered that came up short.I had the carne asada steak burrito and my other dining partners ordered enchilladas, one mole and the other a regular tomato/red sauce. The consensus was that the enchilladas were saucy but bland and the steak in my burrito was in need of a bit more spice/marinade.
I'd like to give this place another chance and hope that it was just an off night, but in the meantime I'll check out la Taqueria.

This is def. one of my GF and I's favorite places to dine out at.The atmosphere is busy and loud but the staff are super friendly and the whole room is really inviting.
Only had sub par service once when we booked for a group of 8,we seemed to be rushed.Otherwise thumbs up.
Prices are pretty decent. This is tapas food,so it can add up if you're real hungry...

Favorite dishes...hard to pick just a few but they include: Okonomiyaki, tuna tataki, popeye salad and the spicy squid. The Robson st. location does have a few things better done than this one such as the ebi mayo, and we haven't tried the Thurlow or Richmond spots, but this one is our regular spot!

Interesting new find
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 1:25am [Dine in]

Was curious to see this place's menu (besides the beefy beef noodles) and it was a pretty pleasant surprise.I'm not too familiar with HK style cafe/diners,so this was a good one in my opinon.Servers were helpful in explaining some of the daily specials and prompt.

We ordered the hand made noodles w/ pork & cabbage, spicy eggplant w/ pork & rice, various dumplings and the wasabi salty chicken. All were nicely presented and with the exception of the salty+peppery chicken(exacty like the name implies) were very good.

Overall, glad there is a new place to eat on Main that is open latenight and with very reasonable prices.

Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 2:51am [Dine in]

Didn't know that this bakery was listed on dinehere but glad it is.

This place hasen't changed a bit since I went to school nearby, many many years ago.Neither has their recipe for bbq pork buns and curry beef buns.

Every other chinese bakery's buns are measured against these ones in my opinion!

Grilled meats!
Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 2:41am [Dine in]

My family and I have been coming here for a while and always enjoy the food. The owner is friendly and asks if everything is good and always lets you know what is his recommendation.

Portions are massive! If you like meat, you'll be pleased. For about $15 you get a large portion of kebabs with salad and rice or fries.Tried the curries too. They're pretty rich, but good. You'll have to pay a bit more for rice and naan but its all good.
The spicy chutney has a pretty decent amount of heat too,so you can add as much as you like.
Will be back for more.

Love coming here for their chicken paratel, masala dosas and prawn or fish curries.Lots of different spices and flavours.Good for when you want indian food without the richness/heavyness but still want something spicy.
Service is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Haven't tried their brunch yet,but it seems interesting.

Submitted Friday, July 10, 2009 - 12:11pm [Dine in]

Went here last weekend for breakfast after wanting check it out for quite a while. We weren't disappointed. We were seated immediately and got a nice little table in the front corner. We had a few different servers throughout the meal but they were all friendly and helpful enough.Price wise they are a bit higher than average for breakfast but the quality makes up for it.
My partner and I both started with one of their waffles.Hers came with a really good fig and orange marmalade and mine with a raspberry caramel.Highly recommend the fig orange one. She then had a tortilla skillet with shrimp, peppers, chorizo and avocado and I had les boulettes which were awesome.I have never really thought about having meatballs at breakfast but these tasted amazing. They came in a spicy tomato sauce and had two poached eggs. Also came with grilled foccacia and hummus.
Getting hungry just thinking about it...will def. be back to try more of the menu.

A regular for their dim sum
Submitted Monday, May 4, 2009 - 11:59pm [Dine in]

We like to come here often for the dim sum, especially since it's served daily til 3pm. They have all the regular items you'd expect like siu mai and har gow and sticky rice. Its all very cheap at about 3 bucks a dish,so you can order away.
Only the sticky rice isn't very good compared to other places like Sun Sui Wah,but other than that we like it alot!

poor service kills it
Submitted Monday, May 4, 2009 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

Went here about a week ago and although the food was pretty decent(average at best) the service was weak.On a sunday night they had 3 waitresses plus the manager working the floor and they were still running around like crazy. This is for a room of maybe 20 people total.

Serving isn't an easy job but they had no organization whatsoever. We were seated by one waitress who we had to flag down after 15 mins. for water and then gave our orders to another only to have the third waitress ask us after another 15 if we'd ordered yet and that she'd have to check to see if our order had made it to the chefs...
We noticed at least two other tables looking irritated ,as well as one couple leaving in anger.
The whole time the 3 servers were scrambling around the restaurant we could see the manager just chilling out,not too concerned.Even when an older couple seated next to us raised issue with being overcharged he just pawned it off to the server to let her deal with it.
Not impressed at all...

Nice little place
Submitted Thursday, March 5, 2009 - 11:33am [Dine in]

Went to Grub the other night with my girlfriend and her family, heard about this place from her.The food is an interesting mix,a small menu of regular items like flatbread pizza and tapas plates. They seem to do a variety of daily specials which we all ordered from.We started with a stuffed mushroom and grilled veg. salad that was quite flavourful and some bread, houmous and tapanade.
Went for the beef tenerloin wrapped in bacon with potato and yam gratin and greens.Beef was cooked well,I didn't really like the bacon that wrapped it though. It seemed like it was some kind of gamey meat, not pork. The stilton custard with poached fruits for dessert was pretty good, but I tried the lemon brulee tart that my GF ordered and it was much better.
The service was friendly. The prices aren't too steep, about average for a main dish($16-19).
I think that the restaurant itself is the best part, really cozy.
Worth another visit, but I'd skip the bacon next time.

This place is such a good deal,a really good spot to grab lunch in a hurry for less than a fiver. The cold cut combo is the best.Tried the meatball sub once, not so good. The bread is always really crisp. The husband/wife duo that run this place are nice and helpful explaining what some of the more unknown items are.

Where to go when I need steak
Submitted Friday, February 27, 2009 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

Been here a few times and I'm impressed by everything about Hy's.I find the staff very professional and the inside of the place is exactly what I think a "steak house" should look like.Very old world style. The steak with green peppercorn sauce is really good and so are the side dishes.Although,I wish you didn't have to pay extra for each side dish. The twice baked/stuffed potato and the asparagus are both done well.Making the caesar salad at your table is a nice touch.
Overall, although its not a cheap dining experience its well worth it for the quality and atmosphere.

Favorite place for indian
Submitted Friday, February 27, 2009 - 12:44pm [Dine in]

I've been coming here for years with family and have never had a bad meal here. The owners and servers are all friendly and the room is nice, even though its in a bit of a random area of Broadway.
The food is always consistantly good,to the point where we always get the same dishes every time, but we have been trying to branch out lately.Highly recommend the butter chicken or butter prawns, the eggplant bharta is tasty and the big tandoori meat/seafood platter is a pretty good value for about twenty bucks.Naan bread is nice too.
As far as prices go,I suppose there are places that are a couple of dollars cheaper per dish but I think the quality more than makes up for it.
Always interested in trying new indian places, but Raga always does everything we like the best!

Went for Dine Out with my partner. The inside of the place looks great and the staff were friendly even though it was during DOV and were rushing about. The pulled duck and the baja fish tacones were very good, but the mains we ordered were pretty underwhelming.I had a flat iron steak on potatoes with veggies and she had sablefish.I think they plated our food too soon before it was all ready because both our dishes were only lukewarm, they still tasted decent.Overall its got very nice ambiance with alright food, maybe better for a drink and a quick bite than making an evening of it.

Good place for breakfast
Submitted Thursday, February 19, 2009 - 5:20pm [Dine in]

Went here for breakfast a couple of times and am impressed.Nothing too fancy, just good hearty breakfasts.Had the mexican scramble the first time and it was tasty, nice rye bread and shredded hashbrowns like a lot of places used to serve.Service is friendly and it was late afternoon so there wasen't a huge crowd. Had the farmer's omlette next visit, definitely for carnivores.I'd even say it had too much meat in it (bacon, ham and sausage with cheddar), but you get a tons for 8 bucks.
Seems pretty popular around the lunch hour,so tables might be harder to come by.Worth it though.

Best pho spot.Been going there for almost 3 years now and my girlfriend and I love it.Brian(the owner) is always super friendly and so is his wife/partner.Food always comes hot and quick. They only do one size of pho but its always plenty. The beef ball version is my choice and always comes with lots of them and plenty of noodles and basil. They also do really tasty salad rolls and the fried roll dips are good too.
Pretty nice atmosphere, could do without the tv,but even then he offers me the remote!!!
