Desserts to die for!!
Submitted Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 10:11am [Dine in]

I've eaten at the bistro next door before, but had never stepped in to this little cafe. It was packed (a good sign), and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Unfortunately there was no room for my group to sit. The waitress (who was super friendly, don't know what other reviews are talking about) said that we could go next door to my old haunt Trafalgars, so we did. It turned out to be a great plan - it was more quiet that time of night, and we had liqueur pairings and wine, and one of my party had a cheese plate (yummy selection too!). The desserts were aweeeeesome - my favourite in the city. Try the toffee cake and the zucotto (sp?). The servers there were really pro and friendly, but the cake was a bit more $$. If you want a more casual setting go to Sweet Obsession, and if you want a more elegant place go to Trafalgars...but either place, you won't be disappointed. :)

La Buca4025 MacDonald Street, Vancouver
solid experience all around
Submitted Saturday, May 9, 2009 - 12:58am [Dine in]

we went to la buca for my boyfriend's birthday, and had a good night all around.
the food was well thought out and presented.
the starter salad we split was good, but unmemorable. the only thing i *do* remember was that the plate it was served on was not only warm...but HOT! it wilted the greens almost immediately. the mains made up for it, almost entirely: i had the green pea agnolotti with lamb, a good selection. the texture of the peas gives away their frozen history, but they're not in season anyways. maybe a squash or other seasonal alternative would be better for the chillier months?
the room itself was great - packed and loud, two things i like in a restaurant. i just wish they'd dim the friggin' lights! no candles or anything for ambiance made it feel kind of clinical and cold.
service was great - unobtrusive & attentive. the kitchen staff seemed very friendly as i walked through the kitchen to go to the bathroom (I still have a hard time with everyone in the kitchen stopping to look at you & say hi while you've got squatting & peeing on your mind! oh well.)
all in all a good find. i'll be back.
one final thought: please join OpenTable?

This restaurant has a great atmosphere, the modern design is original and stylish but also comfortable. The quality of the food is outstanding, and I was impressed that nothing on the menu cost over $18 (even though I was somewhat disappointed in the portions!).
I'm still confused that they don't offer bread or crackers for the cheese plate, was I supposed to use the cylindrical crostinis like chopsticks, or balance the cheese somehow on them, or just eat the cheese with my fork? Kind of wierd. (And they're really salty crostinis too, not great to top with salty cheeses)
Giovanni in the wine bar is fantastic. What an asset he is - he made us feel like he was there just for us, we were so well taken care of! The other 2 times I was there, the servers made me feel rushed, and didn't inspire confidence in their knowledge of menu description.
All said and done, I'll be back. This is a great place to relax over wine and a small bite of delicious food (try their cured meats, mmm!). The only other noteworthy suggestions would include putting a space heater in the f-f-f-freezing back room, and making the menu more accessible (I feel quite confident in my food knowledge, but didn't know what *anything* was on the menu)

Absolutely Perfect

My partner and I are still smiling from our time at Trafalgars Bistro. Every detail was exquisite! The service was flawless, professional but warm and attentive! I had the salmon & avocado tian to start, and the delicious striploin for my main - I'm still drooling! My partner had a caesar salad followed by the duck with home made pasta - fabulous! Our server must've picked up on our birthday 'cheers', because without us even mentioning it, there was a candle in my melt-in-my-mouth three chocolate mousse. The atmosphere was cozy, dim, but a little loud - understandable because it was packed. These guys are doing everything right, check it out.
