Best Sushi in New West
Submitted Sunday, August 1, 2010 - 9:48am [Dine in]

I walked in with my man-person partner, and was a little anxious about the lack of folks in the restaurant, but it certainly did fill up with a few more tables before we left. We were warmly greeted and seated at a table which had couches on either sides -- very comfortable! I can understand that the space would have been expensive to renovate, so the ambiance is a little lacking, but it is certainly clean which is all that matters.

We ordered two of the Sushi combo specials (30% off that day), and even for the regular price of $16.95, the amount of food you get is ABSOLUTELY INSANE! One full roll -- not the typical 5 - 6 pieces, but rather a good 8 - 10 pieces --- 2 piece salmon nigiri, 2 piece tuna nigiri, 2 piece tuna sushi, 2 piece salmon sushi, 2 piece chicken karrage, miso soup, ebi sunomono, AND dessert (deep fried ice cream or deep fried banana). Perhaps I should have read the description a little more in detail before I ordered, because I was floored by the amount of food (my guy and I could have ordered 1 sushi combo special between us) Not only was i floored by the amount, but the quality of the food was phenomenal, all things considered!!! The salmon nigiri was particularly good. After 20 years of living in Vancouver, which really means years and years of eating sushi (of all levels of quality), I would recommend this place to any of my friends, family, etc. I moved to New West a couple months ago, and don't live too too far from this location, so I certainly hope it stays around because after trying numerous other sushi places around here, this place is the all-round best in the Royal City!

Good place if you have the time

I really enjoy this place for lunches or a mid afternoon snack and drink, but you have to make SURE you have the time to sit and relax. It takes a long time to get your food, but when it comes you'll be relatively pleased. It is place to relax and take in the scenery of gastown-whether that be the random celebrities or the grubbies-not to go for a first class meal.

GREAT selection of interesting beers to choose from, and the mussels are always tasty!

So dissapointed and disgusted!

My boyfriend and I had been meaning to try the Orange Room for some time, as it is one of the few in New West that does not cater to the +75 year old crowd and unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed.

Supposedly the restaurants was taken over a little while back, reopened as is now all about tapas and drinks. Too bad the menu is not at all reflected in the decor or the atmosphere. Fake plants, dated decor and awkward, ugly, seating? No thanks.

If you're going to boast about your drink menu and your tapas, make sure the restaurant feels like a chic lounge, rather than a space which lacks any sort of identity. We get that you're the "Orange Room", but really... That's not an identity.

The fellow who seated us was friendly, and his service was adequate but JUST adequate. He failed to mention that two out of the 4 the beers on tap -- which are supposedly exclusive to them and bolded on their menu--are all out. He also failed to mention that they were out of certain food items on the menu. I first question why they are out (it isn't busy so who the heck is not doing their job?) and second, why not tell us BEFORE we get our hopes up?

Finally, the food... Oh horrible food. We ordered the calamari, the beef skewers and the spicy yam fries.

Calamari - fish does not taste fresh. Sauce is a shrimp cocktail sauce (from a jar) which they seem to have added capers & pepper to... Failure.

Beef Skewers - These scared me to death. For the first few bites we couldn't figure out what was wrong... But here goes... they buy cheap cuts of beef and BOIL the hell out of them, to the point that the meet tastes mushy and "fuzzy". THEN they shove the meet on a skewer with a few pineapple chunks, put it on the grill so they get the grill marks, then plate it with honey Dijon mustard. Tasteless horrible meat. The pineapple was the best part.

Spicy yam fries - garlic mayo dip, not spicy, and similar to every other restaurant's yam fries. The least scary thing we ate.

We went on a Friday night at 6:30 and they were almost dead... That should be their busiest time. I hope this incarnation of the orange room either fails or DRASTICALLY improves.

Rivers Reach Pub320 6th St., New Westminster
Top Pub ESPECIALLY considering the local competition!
Submitted Saturday, May 23, 2009 - 4:32pm [Dine in]

This pub is not only one of of the best pubs in New West, it is one of the best places to get a meal in New West (although, I realize that is not saying too much).

The food is fantastic and the price is beyond reasonable for what you're getting.

Service can be a bit rough when it is busy, which seems odd because they tend to have a lot of wait staff on all the time. Nonetheless, the girls are very sweet and try hard to make sure everything is taken care of.

The crowd is quite varied which is nice because you never feel out of place!
