Mexicali4424 Dunbar Street, Vancouver
Its not authentic, but its good for Canadian
Submitted Sunday, November 8, 2009 - 1:35am [Dine in]

While finding authentic mexican food in Vancouver, let alone Canada is impossible, MexiCali does a good job at trying to replicate it. The portions and value are well worth the trip to Dunbar. Not much else comes close to this, not even fast food! They have a good lunch special menu with a good variety and a quite good lime slushy, the "Mexi Fries" are nothing special. Heck, they don't even have those outside of Canada. The ambiance is dark and seating is limited to party's of 4, or you can cram some tables together. Bathroom...wow...tiny(literally). Bang for buck is what its all about and this restaurant is up there.

Don't waste your time going downtown
Submitted Saturday, August 15, 2009 - 4:35pm [Dine in]

Been here more than a few times to get a good taste of the menu and submit a legit review.
The plate meal is definitely the most bang for buck, its loaded with meat or falafel and has probably the best tabouleh from a donair shop. The rice is very moist and has some butter in it to bring out the flavour of the meat. You get 2 pita's with the plate where most places don't even give you anything. The donairs are quite large and packed with all sorts of fresh veggies. There has been times where the beef has been a bit dry but if you go with the chicken or falafel your are guaranteed it to be very moist and yummy. The atmosphere is o.k, there are some Iranian pictures on the walls and the t.v is always on BBC World News so if you want to catch up on your current events you can, however its quite warm inside so be prepared for the fan noise.
If this review doesn't speak for itself the massive daily traffic of bus drivers coming in there will tell you that its worth your money and time to stop in and take a bite.

Doux Crepes1371 Richards St., Vancouver
Doux thumbs up for Doux Crepes!

I live in Yaletown and yet never knew about this place until very recently stumbling upon it. I stopped in for a morning bite to eat and a coffee and was quite pleasantly surprised. I ordered the ham and cheese crepe and was not disappointed, solid comfort food on a weekend morning. Fresh ingredients, speedy service, and most importantly a delicious meal!

I've had better cappucinos, but I did enjoy the laid back atmosphere. The crowd there was very friendly. I think because the restaurant is totally off the beaten path - it seems to be most frequented by local residents. It looks like they are still in progress on some remodelling, but with a little more work this place can only get better!

Great meal for under $7.50

There aren't to many good cheap restaurants downtown but this is one of the better ones that we've been to.
The best deal is the dish of chicken, beef or falafel. The falafel is hit and miss but its usually pretty good. The chicken plate is probably the best out of the 3, definitely get all dill rice, the white rice is pretty bland and you get tired of it. The dolmathes or as they call it " stuffed vine leaves" are a no no, don't even think about it ! Another hit and miss is the greek salad, sometimes its pretty evenly saturated with ingredients, other times its all cucumber. The tabouli salad is much better ( was super fresh a few times)but you get less of it, so its your call.
Do yourself a favor and get it to go, the ambiance is very crowded, a group of 3 or more aren't going to sit comfortable at one of the 4-2 seat tables. Floor is pretty dingy but the service is usually good for being a 1 man show and the people are very friendly and polite.
If DineHere had a 3.5 rating on the food being solid but didn't blast your mind then it would be ticked but they don't but given the benefit out the doubt, its a 4.

Mr. Pickwick's Fish & Chips8620 Granville St, Vancouver
Could be better ?
Submitted Friday, May 22, 2009 - 11:28pm [Dine in]

Got the 2 piece cod+chips for $6.99 ( friday special). It was quite hot and the fish portions larger than average. I guess not everyone got the same meal...
Its your average hole in the wall restaurant with limited seating and mediocre ambiance. The radio was playing quite loud which was quite intrusive.
There isn't much to say about this place other than the special was worth the money. The regular menu is a bit pricy for what it is.

Best Buffet in Vancouver under $15?
Submitted Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

Not the best "ambiance" but who cares. We went there to eat the fabulous $7.95 buffet !
Their selection of dishes isn't as large as most places but it's quality over quantity. Great curry's and the mint chutney is top notch. Not to mention their right out of the oven fresh Naan with the right amount of melted butter on top, not chewy/rubbery nor burned like every other Indian buffet.
The only dish that was bad was their spicy chicken wings, they were quite dry. Probably the best rice pudding we've had as well.
There are some other Indian Buffets that will charge you double the cost for dry old food thats hardly suitable for the price you are paying but Mezbaan is not one of those.
They've got a regular menu as well with prices that are more than fair for the portions.
Definitely on "The Clan's" list of "we gotta go back there !"
