Good food and cosy atmosphere
Submitted Thursday, February 16, 2012 - 4:23pm [Dine in]

Nice family restaurant with good food and cosy atmosphere. This is a third restaurant at the same location in a last few years so I’m hoping "Third time's the charm" as we need more Mexican restaurants in New Westminster. I’m definitely coming back for both dine in and take out.

All you can eat - service charge of 15% will be added to your bill
Submitted Tuesday, October 12, 2010 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

Went for all you can eat with some out of town guests. We were group of four. Food was good and we really had no complaint about the food. Our main complaint was service and service charge. Service was really bad.
Young woman that was our server was really unpleasant. She was expressing her displeasure every time we ordered more food (as their all you can eat is not a buffet). She was very condescending and rude. She even made comment “Are you serious?” after we told her what we would like to order next.

When I went to the cash register to pay the bill she only gave me a bill with the total amount. It was more than $80 which seemed high as we only had four all you can eat – $16 each. I paid with my credit card and even left a small tip, but still no bill which lists all the items. I finally had to ask her to give it to me and she had it right there in her hand. I was under impression that she didn’t give it to me so I won’t see that the service charge of 15% was already added. I told her I don’t want to give the tip anymore as it was already added. She said she already run the transaction. At that moment manager came and reversed transaction for me. He wasn’t particularly pleasant either. I didn’t want to argue or complain because of my guests, but I will never go there again.

What motivation servers have to give good service, when they are getting tip automatically, no matter how they behave.

Nasty washroom
Submitted Monday, January 28, 2008 - 2:15pm [Dine in]

I agree with most reviews about food and service. The food is good service is solid but the atmosphere is to frantic and rushed. Small tables for two make me feel like I’m sitting in the hallway and the washroom is N-A-S-T-Y. It’s a good place if you’re hungry and want to have a quick bite, like at the fast food restaurant. If you want to have romantic dinner or anything like that - not so much.
Stepho’s guys if you’re reading this please renovate and regularly clean your bathroom. You’re doing well - you can afford it.

Affordable, generous and tasty lunch menu, great service and atmosphere

Takis is a great place for weekend lunch. Dinner is a few bucks cheaper at Stephos, but lunch is the same price at Takis and at Stephos. Takis has no line-ups, pressure, nasty washroom, and bus stop atmosphere like Stephos.

We left hungry...
Submitted Monday, January 28, 2008 - 12:34pm [Dine in]

I went to Nyala for Dine Out Vancouver 2008 last weekend for $15 menu. The portions were so small we went home hungry. I told the owner’s son that it was too small, and he said that’s what you get for $15 and tat the regular menu is different (more food).
Why didn’t they have $25 menu (if $15 is too low for them) and normal amount food instead so we don’t have to go home and eat dinner again? Come to think of it, they did have almost the same $25 menu with goat, ostrich and prawn, instead of lamb, chicken and vegetarian. Appetizers and deserts were exactly the same. I never saw such a small piece of the cheese cake in the restaurant before.
It’s a small restaurant, and there were four serves, but the service was slow. The servers would go in the kitchen and stay there, so I was wondering if they were cooking the food?
That was a disappointing experience for me and I will never go there again. I thought that Dine Out Vancouver is an opportunity to promote your restaurant and attract more guests, not take their money and leave them hungry and unsatisfied.

Who is running the show, part 2?
Submitted Monday, January 28, 2008 - 12:04pm [Dine in]

I decided to try and use the gift certificate this weekend for lunch. I went with a friend and we were seated bay a different waitress. I noticed right away that the knife and fork were dirty. It wasn’t just the water stains from the dishwasher, it was greasy and there was dried food on it. I asked our server if we can get clean utensils. She looked very annoyed by my request. She brought me another knife ad fork as dirty as the first pair. I pointed out that these were dirty too and she took paper napkin and wiped the a bit (like that is going to clean the grease and food stains). I said that it was still dirty. She sad she cleaned them for me so what else do I want. I asked for the manager. Server removed all the utensils from out table (so the manager can’t see it?) and went to talk to the manager herself. I’m sure she told him a bit different story, because he came and said that she cleaned it for us and that that’s the best they can do.
I was debating with my friend on what to do should we stay or go, and finally I gave the gift certificate back to the manager. He just said “sorry” absent-mindedly without even looking at me and took it. We left wondering who is running the show at Samba - manager or servers. We had lunch at wonderful Takis Taverna on Davie instead.
