Veneto1450 Douglas Street, Victoria
Great Victorai Tapas
Submitted Monday, May 25, 2009 - 2:44pm [Dine in]

The girlfriend and I wandered into Veneto in the newly reno'd Rialto Hotel Staurday night. The location is in a bit of an "economically depressed" strip of Douglas, but that was quickly forgotten. This may work to the advantage of the "tourist jaded locals" who are looking for a culinary experience restaurant and not just a "fill the seats with fat wallet tourists" eatery that pervades the Victoria restaurant scene.

The place looks fantastic! The marble and walnut finish is very casual classy. (Make sure you take the looong journey to the washrooms! )
The food selection wasn't exactly unique for a tapas restaurant, but preparation and presentation were exceptional. The grilled shrimp with smoked chili butter and roasted corn salsa was perhaps one of the best prawns I have ever eaten. The blue crab spring roll with fresh cilantro and smoked chile dressing was my GF's favorite and got high marks from me.
They have an excellent wine selection and offer a great 3/2oz wine sampler.
All the staff were very friendly and personable.
Dinner for two was about $100, but compared to other Victoria restaurants, we'll be back very soon.

Granville Room957 Granville Street, Vancouver
Much better than a lounge - not quite a restaurant.

The Granville Room is a great downtown place to stop and get out of the rain and away from the street punks before a show or after work. It's a warm inviting room with an excellent scotch selection and a good wine list. Although the menu isn't very large, the food is excellent with above average presentation.

Don't go to The Templeton, I'm trying to keep it a secret.

The templeton is a slice of authentic stainless steel roadside diner heaven. Tableside jukeboxes, milkshakes served WITH the aluminum milkshake container and a history going back to the 30's makes this place a feel more like Arnold's Diner than Vancouver circa 2005 on sex shop infested Granville street. But once inside, don't let the pre-atomic age, slightly greasy spoon ambiance throw you off.
The surprisingly lengthy menu offers everything from those little boxes of cereal to Portobello Mushroom burgers as well the standards such as a huge BLT, solid burgers and the advertised “worlds best 5 dollar shake”. The "1/2 LB. AHI TUNA STEAK with fresh pineapple salsa, organic mixed greens and house chipped fries or garlic mashed potatoes" for an astounding 12.95 makes it look like higher end restaurants are ripping you off.

The Ambiance is what makes it.

Good bang for your buck in the food department.

I think the funky atmosphere is what makes it. The hundreds of hand colored reinterpretations of the menu cover will at some point be a topic of conversation during your meal. The variety ranges from krappy kids stuff, to the one that looks like a poster for a john wayne movie. This place also has the lowest turnover of staff in town. Amongst others, that dude who wears shorts all the time has been working there forever.

Big food, small place.

A generous plate of jumbo Digby Bay scallops and tiger prawns arrive in a bonito butter sauce-for $10, steal it. The wine list also offers some real bargains. Perfect for postmodern, commitment-fearful diners.
