Luckily the food is good!

Nestled in a giant ex-heritage/funeral(?) house, is a surprisingly good sushi place in this area of Burnaby. Definitely try one of the special rolls (the mangodise is great.. at least when mangoes are in season) or the sublime spicy tuna tempura roll. Enjoy the warmth from the (relatively) eager wait staff and the often-too-hot fireplace. Just make sure to avoid the wrath of the hostess, who seems to switch between being surly/rude to butchering phrases like 'bon appetit!' faster than you can say 'nigiri'.

Good all around

Had lunch here a few times now. Everything is pretty solid.
Their Champion ramen is my regular: noodles have the right amount of elasticity, the charsu pork was pretty tender, and their kimchi was flavourful. Service is usually quick and polite no matter how many customers are in the restaurant. I gave an extra star for ambiance for the crazy Japanese shows they have on rotation on their TV.

New (worse) management & changed recipes.

I dropped by for a drink with some friends and promptly ordered our usual half-sweet mango green tea & matcha milk shake.

We've been regulars since it opened, so we had suspected that management had changed when we stopped seeing the owner/owner's wife, and when the entire staff suddenly changed. But we never really had an issue with that as our usual drinks were still made in the same manner. However, once we tasted our drinks, we realized that something was quite wrong.

The matcha milk shake was definitely less matcha-y in taste and flavour, and definitely more ice-y. It was sub-par.

Their mango green tea was the worst though, as it had a decidedly bitter tea flavour (think day-old over-steeped tea -- I'm not joking) and there was absolutely no mango taste. Mango always has a amazing aroma when you have it, but this one didn't even taste like mango, but was extremely artificial - almost like how food tastes after it's been in a tin-can for a long time (think metallic).

I brought it up to the counter to complain and the server informed me that it was because we ordered it half-sweet. He offered to add the remaining syrup to fix it. That was when I realized he used the term "syrup." When we first starting going to Pearl Drops, the owner told us that they always added the fruit and the caramelized sugar separately, so if you wanted it less sweet, it would still have all the fruit flavour.

After talking to my friends, they had all noticed a drop in quality for their drinks as well. Sad but true, Pearl Drops is no longer the best bubble tea joint in town.

Great Pasta place

After hearing of the reviews, I brought a small group to check this place out. I had linguini with scallops and mushrooms in a cream sauce, and I must say that it was quite good. Portions were large as well - a small was more than most of my friends could finish - and all for under $10!

However, a few of my friends who had the light cream sauce felt that it was too light - not flavourful enough. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable experience. Reservations are a must though, as we saw lots of people dropping in throughout the night and having to wait a while for a table.

Good food

Mango roll was very fresh and tasty. Good complement of flavours.

Duck roll was chewy and forgettable. Tuna and sushi wasabi tempura wasn't as rare in the middle as promised, otherwise it was good.

Grilled sablefish with miso puree was very tender and full of great taste.
