Never again!

I really wanted to give this restaurant a good rating. On a good note, the decor is nice and clean since the renos, the hostess is nice and friendly, and dim sum is priced well. But, personally a few patrons and I had a terrible experience at this establishment. If dim sum is over at 3pm why let anyone else get seated at 2:20ish and say they will stop the dim sum carts 5 mins after? My bf and I were seated as well as many other groups around 2:20ish the dim sum carts were still carted past tables at the time. We only got 2 plates before we realized they were not pushing the dim sum carts around anymore. The dim sum was okay not great. Looking at other patrons I realized that they too noticed they and were getting upset. I guess it is our faults for coming in late but regardless we should have been informed they would shut down dim sum service right at 2:30 instead of 3:00pm. I decided to make a last ditch effort to ask a server if we can place an order for some simple items: "hargow" and "siu mai" the server quickly shouted "wait for carts!" wow..wutta bitch. hmmm...no carts no food I guess that was our que to get outta the restaurant. Another server noticed we needed help and tried to approach us only to be stopped by the bitch server who said in cantonese "don't help them, they came late they can't get any more food!" She thought I could not understand her talking in Cantonese. Other customers started getting up to leave because they were clearly upset they too could not place an order for dim sum. So we just asked the nicer server for our bill to leave. The bitch server still had the audacity to bring us and some other groups around us the dinner menu and ask if we would like to order for that menu (i guess the manager noticed her crude behavoir to us and the other guests sitting nearby) we shook our heads no and she gave us a snide, sarcastic reply "no problem then"
Never again!

Not too shabby...
Submitted Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 12:41pm [Dine in]

So been to this location a few years back and did not have the best experience, but went there yesterday for a company Christmas dinner and WOW! Renovations are incredible and now the restaurant really looks like a modern, classy, steakhouse. Although a bit dark and nosy the experience was great! Ordered the crab, artichoke, & spinich dip with chips to start it was pretty good the chips were freshly cut and fried. I am not a big steak eater but decided to give it a try and now I am definately a steak fan! Ordered the NY Keg Dinner which comes with a caesar salad, New York striploin, vegetables, and garlic mash. I expected the steak to be flavourless and tough but it was so tender, juicy, and full of flavour. I had so much left over to take home as well. So now I am a definately a Keg steak fan. Will definately return!

Overall a great spot!
Submitted Friday, December 14, 2007 - 2:24pm [Dine in]

Tried this noodle house for the first time and had a pretty good experience. The food was satisfying and good they have straightforward comfort foods like ramen in soup, gyoza, rice, and noodle dishes. Like previous reviewers mention, this establishment is more Korean than Japanese although they do have some Japanese ingredients here and there. Service here is pretty good the servers (two girls) were polite and very accomodating. Ambiance is alright nothing really special but overall quite clean. I will definately return here again and again!!!

Just yummy eats!
Submitted Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 1:38pm [Dine in]

My bf and I love to frequent Bao Chau simply for the reason that they have good and cheap eats. I usually order pho bo hue and my bf a large bowl of beef flank pho just great comfort food and perfect for the day after partying way too hard! Spring rolls are to die for! We have tried the rice dishes and they are hearty, meaty, and filling! Service is solid nothing to complain about and ambience is lacking but the food is really what keeps us coming back.

Sushi Town is awesome!
Submitted Friday, December 7, 2007 - 11:06am [Dine in]

Went to this location yesterday after reading the reviews. I confirm that yes it is almost identical to Sushi Garden. They even have the same spicy tuna sashimi as Sushi Garden.
Anyways, the food was pretty amazing. My bf and I got a variety of sushi (rolls, nigiri, sashimi) All delicious, fresh, and large portions. I tried the awesome roll (after reading reviews) and wow does it ever live up to its name! It is AWESOME!!!! It's basically a california roll with baked salmon on top and a spicy sweet mayo and sweet soy sauce. It also comes with masago and bonito shavings for garnish. What a creative roll! Reminds me of the many creative rolls at The Eatery in Vancouver but this roll is so much better! I am definately going back to try other rolls they have to offer!
Service was good no complaints at all. Ambiance is blah but nonetheless clean and bright. I am definately going back!

Great Service
Submitted Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 1:53pm [Dine in]

Had a nice dinner at Joey's with my bf yesterday night. First time to this restaurant and it was very pleasant. Expected it to be a loud, busy restaurant but it was actually quiet. I guess it was a slow night.
Ordered the meditteranean hummus and pita which also came with bruchetta and tzatziki sauce it was a massive plate! The pita also had some melted parm and feta cheese on it. YUM! Also ordered the ahi tuna tacos which tasted fresh, crunchy and delicious. My bf had the chicken and ribs which he said was tasty too. Service was top notch and we got all of our items in good timing. Our server even came by to let us know our entrees were on its way. Wonderful!

Submitted Friday, November 23, 2007 - 12:41pm [Dine in]

My bf and I love to eat brunch so one day we decided why not brunch by the sea? Milestones was a great choice in a prime location. Food was outstanding. My bf ordered prime rib hash with poached eggs and I had the eggs benedict (my personal fav) Both were made with care and presented well. Service was good no complaints. Would like to go back to try their other menu items!

Sometimes I pick up a sandwich at this little bakery in Metrotown Mall. It is located right under the food court on the lower level. The sandwiches are to die for. Super yummy and fresh with great flavours. You can get turkey, roast beef, ham, tuna, veggie and specialties such as roasted salmon, roasted lamb made with their freshly baked bread. Delicious!

I was pleasantly surprised by this HK style cafe serving up chinese and western dishes. Ordered the baked pork chop on fried rice and hot and sour soup and both were pretty good. I will definately order take out or even dine in next time! Probably go try the specialty curry as it is their house special items. Recommended!

Best Guu!!!
Submitted Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - 9:52am [Dine in]

Tried all Guu restaurants and I have to say this one is the winner!
Food Ordered:
Oyster Gratin-Delicious with well rounded flavours
Duck Breast-Bland but presented nicely
Halibut Cheek-Delicate and fresh tasting
Negitoro-Awesome negitoro!!! Except they give you nabisco type crackers with it which i felt tasted like cardboard.
Bbq Kalbi-Best dish we had so tender and flavourful!
Drinks were absolutely delicious and they had a great pitcher special for $8.50!!!!
Service was not too bad but our server forgot to put in our order for fried banana for dessert and had taken off after his shift. We waited a while and decided to leave.
Overall not too bad of an experience! Definately my favorite GUU for food!

Decent but not the best
Submitted Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 10:28am [Dine in]

Got seated right away and ordered bimbimbap rice stone bowl with veggies and meat, bbq beef which came with soup, rice, and side dishes and tuna and salmon sashimi. Rice stone bowl was bland but still tasted good and presented nicely. BBQ beef was really tasty but arrived slightly cold and also arrived first before any side dishes, rice, or soup. Tuna and salmon sashimi tasted fresh and nicely presented. Side dishes were decent.
Service was not good but not bad either.
Restaurant was clean.
All in all not bad but there are better Korean restaurants.

Sooo Delicious!!!! I'm craving more!
Submitted Wednesday, September 12, 2007 - 10:11am [Dine in]

Living in Burnaby/Vancouver I should frequent this restaurant more often! This is the 2nd visit that I have made to the restaurant and I am sooo glad I did. After a rollerblade session along the seawall I was famished and excited for Phnom Penh!
I wanted to try everything on the menu but my boyfriend (who eats at Phnom Penh all the time) suggested we order three dishes since they are pretty large portions. So we ordered the trieu fried rice, butter beef, and duh....the CHICKEN WINGS!!!!! Fried rice was not anything special but arrived piping hot and smelled so yummy. Chicken wings lived up to the hype and were hot, crispy, and tasty especially with the lemon pepper dip! Now...the BUTTER BEEF!!!! OMG! I seriously love this dish. It combines all my favorite flavours, sour, sweet, and salty. The cilantro/parsley gives it a nice fresh flavour, the beef is soo tender, and the sauce is so tangy...thinking about it makes my mouth water! All in all the service was quite good as it was not too busy but ambiance was lacking. I didn't really care I was too distracted by the food! Yum Yum!! Next time i'm going to try more dishes!!! Totally recommended!!!!

yummy pho in burnaby
Submitted Friday, September 7, 2007 - 11:00am [Dine in]

Usually i order Bun Bo Hue which is the spicy beef/pork noodle in soup. DELICIOUS! You can smell the lemongrass and spices and broth is so delicious and comforting. You can get a special deal for a large pho and spring roll for $7.95! I can honestly say there are better restaurants that serve up Pho in Vancity but this Burnaby establishment is great for those not willing to make the travels to Vancouver. Service is good the waitresses are usually on top of things. Ambiance is lacking and the interior needs a major clean up but who cares if the food tastes good and your in and out in 30 mins?

Off day?
Submitted Friday, September 7, 2007 - 10:39am [Dine in]

I was super excited to visit Guu since my last visit was about a year ago. My bf and i decided on Guu w/ Garlic. Waited about 15mins for a table and sat at the bar...host ask if it was ok to be seated at the bar, which was nice. Got our hot towels and drink promptly. Ordered a total of 5 dishes, baked oyster w/ mayo sauce, beef carpaccio, daikon salad, tuna tataki, okonomiya (spelt wrongly but it's a japanese seafood, veggie pancake). Only the baked oyster and daikon salad amazed our taste buds. Beef carpaccio was chewy and tough maybe the wrong cut of beef. Tuna tataki needed more sauce and the garlic chips fried too long so it was kinda bitter. The seafood pancake was drenched in 3 sauces and was a little bit too saucey and that made the dish extra salty. Overall the food experience did not meet our expectations. Ambiance is good and it was loud which i didn't mind I also got to see the chefs cooking which was fun while waiting. But I will stick to Kingyo from now on.

yummy sushi!!
Submitted Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 10:29am [Dine in]

I have been to Sushi Garden since it opened years ago when it was half the size it is now. Since the renovations the space has opened up greatly and allowed for more seating. What keeps this place soo busy is the quality of the food and the prices. All the sushi is fresh, nicely presented, and tasty. The most popular item on the menu is the spicy tuna sashimi it is truly delicious with large chunks of fresh tuna slathered in a sweet spicy hot sauce and accompanied by smaller chunks of cooling cucumber. If you like spicy and you like tuna try this dish!
Like the other reviewers have mentioned, this restaurant does not have the greatest service. Although my bf and I had pretty good service from a male server yesterday. Female servers for some reason always seem to have a bad attitude here.
Ambiance is not particualarly stunning
Expect not so great service, but just enjoy the yummy sushi!

Breakfast Heaven!!!!
Submitted Monday, August 27, 2007 - 1:13pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I had a severe craving for breakfast and decided to visit O'Doul's since we had heard that they have terrific eggs benedict. Although it was noon, the kind host said we could order from the breakfast menu. A professional server came by and offered us a beverage of freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee and gave us some time to order. Of course i ordered eggs benedict and decided on the smoked salmon benny, my bf had the corned beef hash with a poached egg. Both plates came with breakfast potatoes as well. We received a basket of olive bread and flatbread before our meal came with some jam, butter and peanut butter which was great! The servers were quick to get us any extra sauces we needed and refills for our beverages. Overall the meal was absolutely heaven...the eggs were poached to perfection not rubbery at all the smoked salmon was delectable smoky and salty and the hollandaise sauce was creamy and delicous. I had a bite of my bf corned beef hash with potatoes and it was just as good! Definately an excellent dining experience and now I crave for eggs benny from O'doul's all the time!

Korean BBQ lovers dream! Service nightmare...
Submitted Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 3:14pm [Dine in]

A group of my friends and I visited this restaurant later at night for some good BBQ eats. We ordered a variety of food including noodle dishes, BBQ meats (of course), chicken dishes, and the appetizers that came with the meal. It was all delicious and tasty. The chicken was breaded a little to much though. Service however was extremely poor. Even though we pressed the service button no one would show up. We had to personally walk up to the servers to ask for drinks, extra napkins, etc. We were a larger group but were polite and ordered way more than we could eat so we expected service to be a little better we were even the only group left in the restaurant besides a couple smaller tables. A man even came by our table to rush us out! He pointed at the clock and said we had to hurry as the would be closing in half and hour! GEEEZ....I guess the food makes up for it!

Excellent comfort food
Submitted Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 2:25pm [Dine in]

Like all the other reviewers mentioned, this place does look like a cafeteria but even though the decor is lacking in style the main highlight of this restaurant is the food. I went there for lunch and had the agedashi tofu which was topped with green onion and bonito shavings as well as drowned in a sweet soy sauce...yum! I also had the Oden (hot pot) with fish cake, tofu, veggies. Delicous broth and delicate taste although i found the hot dog in the hot pot to be a bit strange. I was served with a side of rice cooked with mushrooms and carrots. I would definately frequent this restaurant more often a lunch and I definately recommend it!
The food is so comforting and delicious I will be back to try many more dishes!

Good Dim Sum
Submitted Monday, August 13, 2007 - 12:08pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for a little dim sum and it was pretty busy. Overall the dim sum was pretty good, service was not bad, there was no ambiance here. If you are looking for a well priced dim sum place go here. Our bill came to under $20 for about 5 plates and 2 soft drinks.
