Nice Neighbourhood Pub, food was just ok.
Submitted Monday, March 28, 2011 - 2:12am [Dine in]

Hubby and I stopped in for a quick drink and appie....liked the place when we walked in. Sat down and got comfortable, and the waitress came by and gave us menus and drink menus and then walked away. Would have been nice if she asked if we "knew what we wanted" as we were in a hurry (and they weren't busy)...however she did come back fairly quickly. She then took our drink order but even though our menus were closed didn't ask us if we also wanted to order food at that time. She left like a bat outta hell. Came back with our drinks a little while later and we gave her our food order. We just ordered the battered cod with yam fries and chipotle mayo dip. It came in a timely manner, however the batter was overwhelmingly thick and the fish was stringy and hard to find amongst the crumbling batter. Hubby liked the yam fries...hard to go wrong on those. We paid up and left around 7pm Sat night and it was just starting to get busy....probably a fun place if you're not in a hurry and don't care about the food quality too much!

Food is quite good, Front desk/phone service SUCKS
Submitted Friday, February 18, 2011 - 8:11pm [Take-out]

It's too bad the owner doesn't get rid of the rude, angry Asian woman who takes your money when you go to pick up your order. She is the reason I won't order/go there any more.
Fortunately for Chili Pepper House, my husband is much more forgiving and patient with rude ignorant people, so he still orders and picks up from there, but when he orders he requests to talk to the owner directly.
The food is pretty good, probably some of the best asian around this area.
Rarely see people eating inside the restaurant, the place is void of any ambience.
So, to sum it up , good food, owner is a nice guy, employee sucks, no ambience, and also parking is a real hassle, you have to park in the back which is quite dark and scary and walk around to the front past Money Mart and along 96th Ave.

Good Food and Service...but WAY too expensive
Submitted Wednesday, December 8, 2010 - 12:22am [Dine in]

I come here quite often, as it is close to where I live. I am always impressed with the menu, the service and the atmosphere. But I am always amazed at the bill at the end of the night. The food is absolutely killer, but I have to seriously reconsider coming here so often because of you have a few drinks the bill can go crazy in a heartbeat! Last time I was with a couple girlfriends and we had appies, and drinks....in the lounge...and my single bill was $85, and I wasn't even drunk! Now that's a $200 night if I go with my hubby! WAY too much!

Great burgers, loud, and good service
Submitted Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - 11:11pm [Dine in]

Went here before a Canucks game on a friday night, around 5pm, so it seems 3/4 of the crowd was working class and the other 1/4 were going to the game. Either way, MAN, was it ever LOUD! Which was ok with me, (that night). Service was QUICK for how busy it was....we switched chairs up to the bar after ordering and no problems...drinks came, bartender took our order for food, all good. My Cajun Chicken burger was actually really really good, and I'm not a big chicken fan...I only ordered it because I ws tired of beef. That being said, the menu is a little small. I would've liked more variety. Maybe some pastas or more variety of .....everything. Anyways... My other half loved his Bleu cheese burger, which I tasted and loved also.
So, I will go here again before a game...I also really loved that as I sat at the bar I could watch three screens with a CFL football game , a hockey game, and the Texas-NY game.....sweet.....and the walk back to Rogers Center is all downhill! lol!

Jolly Mac's Pub14815 108 Avenue, Surrey
OK pub in need of updating
Submitted Saturday, January 2, 2010 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

We come here every now and then, and usually the food can be fair to middling. I've never found any of their menu items to be outstanding...even the burgers.
We were here on New Years Eve and had the buffet, which was average. The roast was a little dry, buns were hard, and really not a very large selection for a buffet. Plus the lady serving it looked like she wanted to punch someone out. Which really wouldn't be a surprise in that bar....we ended up having to leave early due to some unsavoury characters causing a disturbance in the bar, and we felt it better to leave and be safe then to stay and bear witness to whatever could happen.
The decor is late 70's, early 80's. Needs updating. Service is usually pretty good...not always friendly, but usually quick. Sometimes they have decent live entertainment on the weekends.
It's a typical Surrey pub, whattya want?

OK for Prime Rib, but service could be better
Submitted Saturday, January 2, 2010 - 10:59pm [Dine in]

We've been to this place many times with large parties, usually for birthdays. I think we usually end up coming here because it is cheaper than the Keg, and they can usually accomodate all of us.
But every time I remember being here, the service has always never been that great. The food is usually so-so, depending on what you order. If you're going for the prime rib, it's usually pretty good. But other items can be hit and miss.
Price wise it's average, maybe a little bit over priced for the quality and service, and also the tables always seem to be very crowded together, making it a little bit uncomfortable.
It is dark inside and I think that could be hiding some uncleanliness. It just feels a little divey inside.
Overall, an average steak/pasta joint, nothing fancy, a little over-priced, but ok if you want a mediocre night out. Don't expect great service though.

Tokachi Japanese Restaurant10767 King George Highway, Surrey
Amazing Service, really good food.
Submitted Saturday, January 2, 2010 - 10:47pm [Dine in]

Every once in a while we come back to Tokachi. We are North Surrey residents, and when we think of going for Sushi, it usually involves a drive to Richmond or downtown Vancouver. But when we do come back here, we always wonder why it's taken us so long to return!
It's located right in the thick of Whalley, and the area isn't pretty. But the service and food and ambiance inside make it worth the trip.
Tonight we had a young japanese girl serving us and she was absolutely amazing! When we walked in we were greeted at the door by the owner, and asked if we wanted a tatami booth, even though we were only two people. Once seated, our server was very attentive to our needs, and I can honestly say I don't remember having better service anywhere in a very long time....if ever! We ordered a mix of nigiri, sashimi and maki, tempura, and some appies. All was wonderful! At least as good as most places downtown or in Richmond.
So if you're in Surrey looking for a good Sushi place, don't by shy about trying Tokachi's!

Pho Tam Restaurant10302 135 Street, #10, Surrey
Best Pho so far, by far!
Submitted Friday, October 2, 2009 - 3:17am [Dine in]

My hubby and I have been coming here for years now, and we have our favourite, which is the beef ball and rare beef slices pho along with the salad roll or deep fried spring roll for $8.95. And it's verrrry large, so go hungry. The difference between this place and other pho establishments is the amount of beef and soup you are given, as well as the quality. I don't know how they do it, but I've never tasted anything like the broth there. And I've tried many many pho places (I work in Richmond and go to a lot out there!) as has my hubby, and we agree there is absolutely no comparison. This place is cash only, and parking is at a minimum. You can park in Safeway across the street and pay a buck or two to park, and Pho Tam will re-imburse you. It's not the best area of town, but I've never ever had a problem there. The staff are fast, efficient and friendly enough. They seem to focus more on getting their job done efficiently and correctly than making friends, which is ok with me!

Kalamata Greek Taverna1481 West Broadway, Vancouver
Overhyped and terrible service
Submitted Friday, October 2, 2009 - 2:58am [Dine in]

I chose this restaurant based on the reviews, as I wanted a good greek place for my birthday dinner. We arrived early, around 6pm, and there were only 3 other tables in the place. We still stood at the door for about 5 minutes before the waiter (who was miserable) acknowledged us, even though he knew we were there. After he seated us we waited at least ten minutes for a server to arrive, and she didn't even ask us if we wanted a drink, just if we were ready to order! I was just about ready to leave, but we did order, and also ordered a half litre of wine, which took another ten minutes to arrive. The food was fantastic, I had the spanokopita dinner and my husband had the lamb, no complaints at all about the food. Also the Kalamari appie was delicious!
The terrible service continued when were were trying to get the waitresses attention to pay our bill. (We had tickets to a play, so were on a time limit). She seemed to go out of her way to ignore us all evening. We even contemplated just getting up and walking away, as we were getting tired of saying "excuse me" and getting no response.
Overall, the food was great, service totally lousy, and I thought the ambience was lousy as well. Maybe after dark it's better, but it is old and in need of freshening up in that place. And the fact that it's old doesn't work to make it quaint, just dirty feeling.

We stopped here today for lunch, and the service was fantastic! This is part of a chain of restarurants on the corner of the main square village, and it is awesome for just sitting with your food, drink and watching the world go by......

Like I said,it's in the village so it's pricey....but lot's to do!!! cheers!

Best Dim Sum in Richmond
Submitted Monday, August 24, 2009 - 1:55am [Dine in]

My husband and I have been coming here for years, and it is hands down the best dim sum we have had to date. We often will try a new place, but always come back to Continental, and are always satisfied.
I would say I've been to this place about 50 times, and only ever had poor service once. But I have been very satisfied with the food every time! We find it best to get there before noon, as it can get very busy later than that for dim sum.

Overpriced and over-hyped
Submitted Monday, August 24, 2009 - 1:47am [Dine in]

Very good service and treatment by our servers, the appetizers were amazing and the duck was very good. I had the Halibut, which was very ho-hum. Flavourless and bland. We were in the cigar room for a group dinner, and were under the impression we would be able to have a cigar after our meal, however because there were two wedding parties using the restaurant, we were not able to do this. And we were limited to how we could get to outside of the restaurant to have a smoke as we weren't allowed to cut through the wedding parties. Excuse me, I thought this was a Restaurant, not a private hall!
Overall it was an ok experience, but for the amount spent on the meal, I won't be back anytime soon, especially if I have to pay myself!

We have been to this place about 20 or so times, and was usually pretty good. The last couple of times the service has been bad. This time, in particular, the service was horrendous. Usually the entertainment is great, and this time, they had a "improv comedy" group there, and I use the term comedy very loosely, and to say the least, they were horrible. Not funny in the least. It took 1/2 hour just to get a drink and the server didn't seem to want to take our order at all, for anything, all night. Same server we had trouble with the last time we were there. We will be avoiding this place for quite a while and try to find somewhere new to spend our money. The one good thing is the food is still very good, but not good enough to keep us coming back.
