I, like some other reviewers, have the luxury of having visited this restaurant in the past and present, and, as such, I can give insight into the restaurant.
I eat A LOT of sushi. Not just maki, but sashimi, nigiri, chirashi... you name it.
Sushi is an art form and a food. Now, AYCE sushi bars do not necessarily have to honour the art... but all sushi bars must honour the passion.
BC Sushi no longer bears the passion that drew me previously.
Service with a smile has been replaced with service with a snark, and the food has deteriorated in quality along with the ownership.
It saddens me to say that I will no longer be frequenting this sushi den when I have such a host of selection in this beautiful city which affords better pricing and service.
This place is fantastic.
The Roundel thrives because it is a down to earth homey place, not somewhere for people with a sense of entitlement.
The food is local and so are the employees. If you live in the Nanaimo and Hastings area, the Bennies at the Roundel should be a staple of your breakfast diet.
I have taken many of my friends and family to this restaurant and have never had an issue. Just arrive early if you want to beat the rush. This place is small and very popular among the natives... expect a full crowd of people who know one another.
I've been a regular at the Riz ever since I worked in the Technology Centre across the street from it and I have to say that I love it. The service is amazing, the staff are friendly, the food is above average in quality and price, and the new look is great.
When I went away to Australia for 8 months, the Vancouver sushi I craved wasn't from anything downtown or in Kits, it was from the Riz.
I highly recommend this place to any sushi junkies or Vancouverites looking to have a good cheap meal that leaves you satisfied.
In fact, I'm going there right now...
