Went late on a Friday evening (8 pm) and didn't have to make a reservation as the bulk of the busy time had passed. We ordered the sambal green beens (excellent), chicken curry (great sauce but the chicken seemed rubbery to me), the papaya and mango salad (good) and the roti (excellent). This was plenty of food for the two of us and the service was friendly and fast. My only complaint was that it was quite dark in the restaurant and since there were no candles on the table, I had to get out my iphone flashlight to read the menu. For the 4 dishes, a soft drink, and a beer, the bill came to $60. Will certainly be back. Nice to finally have a good malyasian restaurant in North Vancouver!
A friend and I were there on a Monday night and although it was almost empty when we walked in, it was full and busy by the time we left. Obviously a very popular spot. We ordered some sashimi and 3 rolls but when the bill came, we weren't charged for one of the rolls. Turns out they had a special on so that brought our bill down to $24 including HST, which was quite decent considering we were both full. The Vancouver Roll tasted a bit fishy to me, but the other rolls were quite good. The food was well presented and inventive. The tataki nigi was a bit disappointing as it should have been warm having just been blow-torched but it was actually cold. The service was solid and they were happy to keep refilling our cups with complimentary tea and didn't mind that we lingered long after we finished eating. I would consider this a little "hole in the wall" gem. Nothing fancy, but good for sushi on a budget.
Food: My husband loved his meal (tenderloin), and mine was quite good too. Similar to what you would get at much pricier restaurants.
Service: A bit slow, although our server was quite a character with her off-beat outfit. Kind of a laid back hippy style of serving, not completely on the ball.
Value: Great value for the money, especially considering that there is live music
Ambiance: Great place for local live music, blues, jazz, whatever the band is playing. I was a bit put off by the fact that the lead singer of the band came by each table with his hat, asking for donations after their set. He kind of stood there looking expectant until we coughed up some money. I think he was a bit disappointed with our donation. I would rather they put out a hat by the stage rather than put the diners on the spot like that . Maybe thats the way things are done now, I don't know.
All things considered, a fun, off beat place. Not your usual cookie cutter eatery.
This restaurant isn't fancy but it's a great little neighbourhood place. The food is always very good, especially the rolls. The staff are very friendly and really seem to enjoy working there. Once, while waiting for a pick up order, the staff insisted we wait at a table and gave me some chinese tea and my son a soft drink, on the house. It's the little touches like that that make it a neighbourhood favourite. We usually get take out but when we have stayed to eat, the service has always been good. Recommended for a "cheap and cheerful" meal.
We used to go there a lot for lunch with people from work and it was always busy. I took my dad there last week at lunch time and we were the only people there. We were there from 12:30 to 1:30 and only one more couple came in. The food was mediocre to poor and the ambiance is terrible; plastic covering the windows, dark, old furniture, faded hand printed signs on the walls. There are many, better sushi places on the North Shore so we won't be going back.
We have tried several of the menu items and have enjoyed all of them. Once, my son's burger was undercooked and even though I didn't notice until he had almost finished it, we were not charged for it. The manager appeared almost instantly and apologized and explained how the burgers are cooked, etc. The food and drinks are well priced and everything is very tasty. Just try to avoid the section at the back of the restaurant if you don't have small children; this seems to be where they put the families so it can be a bit noisy with restless little kids.
Highly recommended.
Service: Poor communication among staff. The table the hostess took us to on the patio was not cleared or cleaned and then we were were told it was going to another group who were already seated on the patio but who wanted a better table. We could have the table we were vacating. We took it but felt as though we were getting their rejects. A complimentary menu item or drink would have soothed us a bit but nothing was offered.
Food: Good, but no better than several more moderately priced restaurants.
Value: see comment under "food".
Ambience: Amazing location and patio. The heaters and blankets on the patio are nice once the sun goes down.
Not sure if we'll rush back.
The location is great and the view is amazing but we were a bit disappointed with the food and drinks. They need a much better and longer cocktail menu for starters. The appetizers and entrees were okay but not worth the price as far as quantity and quality goes. The staff was very friendly and eager to please which was nice but I don't know if we will be back unless the menu improves. There are just too many great restaurants in metro Vancouver where we can get better food and drinks for our money. The upstairs lounge will be open soon and we might go to check it out but only for a quick drink. Having said all that, this is a new place and hopefully they will read these comments and endeavour to improve.
We went here twice last year and had excellent food and service both times. The chef even came out to chat with the diners which was a nice touch. We were there again recently and although my husband enjoyed his meal (the rack of lamb and lobster potato leek soup) I found both my selections very salty, so much so that I couldn't finish my entree. However, the amuse bouche (squab leg) and complimentary dessert taster were nice touches. The restaurant wasn't very busy but even so the service was a tad slow. In general, this is a lovely place with a very talented chef who comes up with interesting taste combinations. You won't find the same food anywhere else.
We have been here a few times now and have always had good food and service. Yes, it can get a bit loud on Friday and Saturday nights but then go a different night if you want a quieter atmosphere. My husband loves the charcuterie with a variety of cheeses and condiments. We often let the server decide on the combination and surprise us. The little loaf of bread that it comes with is warm and soft. We have also tried the soup of the day (always good, especially the broccoli cheese soup when they have it), as well as several salads. The only thing I've not enjoyed is the pea sprout side salad (tastes like grass). The best thing on the menu is the amazing Thomas Haas chocolate lava cake. Amazing!! Best. Dessert. Ever.
