Something different
Submitted Monday, April 28, 2008 - 3:46pm [Dine in]

This little restaurant is a nice change from the usual fish and chips thats virtually everywhere in Steveston. My mom was the one who told me about this place because she and her friend had lunch here. She thought the food was good and the price was fair for the 2 of them so she decided to bring the whole family here. We've eaten a few times since then. The place is cramped and small, however they have recently expanded their restaurant.

For our appys, we ordered the tofu goreng (deep fried tofu with chili sauce) and the satay ayam (marinated and grilled chicken with peanut sauce). The folks love the tofu, and me and my brothers enjoy the satay. The peanut sauce is delicious and it compliments the chicken nicely. The for our entrees we ordered the stir fry eggplant in sambal sauce and the rendang beef curry. The eggplant is a bit greasy and the curry is so-so. But for the price, the food is plausible. One of things I really enjoyed is the dessert- deep fried banana with green tea ice cream. Nice and simple.

Quite an experience

This was my first time dining at a Cactus Club and I must say it was absolutely good. The only issue I had was that my friends and I had to wait 15 or so minutes to be seated; people who came after us got seated first. But it was understandable because we were a party of 5 and it was a friday evening so it was busy as heck. Nevertheless, when we were seated, everything was smooth sailing from that point on.

We got 1 of the better tables in the house because there was a view of the working kitchen (which I personally enjoy viewing) and how the food was being prepared. We started with the Calamari appy. I've had better calamari but it wasn't too bad. When our entrees came, I was impressed with the way they plated the food. I had the Cavatappi Alfredo with prawns and it was simply delicious. One of my friends had the Blackened Creole Chicken- it was spicy, but the spice wasn't overpowering, it was just enough heat. I also got to taste the Yam Fries which I think is a step up from the regular fries. We also had the dessert trio to end our meal and it was scrumptious. The cheesecake was decadent, the baked apple pie was hearty and the lava cake was wonderful.

The service was great, I have no complains about it. Our server was very friendly and helpful. The overall ambiance was very casual, although the food elevates everything to the finer end of dining.

One of the things I like checking is a restaurant's washroom. If the washroom is clean, well stocked and doesn't smell, it's a plus in my book. This restaurant's washroom definitely gets an A.

A nice cozy place

My first impression of this place was definitely positive. It felt like one of those small Italian eateries that is just warm and inviting. There weren't a lot of tables for customers, but I'm thinking that's what makes it cozy. The wine cellar is just fascinating to look at. It's entertainment on its own.

I ordered the Prawns, Scallops and Mushroom in pesto sauce. Huge portion, although I thought for the price I paid I should have gotten at least a garlic bread or an extra side. Nevertheless, it was still pretty good. I tried my friend's Fettuccine Alfredo and I thought it was good. It was sauced perfectly, unlike some places where their pasta is swimming in sauce. I had a good time

The service was okay. It took 45 minutes before the food arrived. But our waitress apologized. My only concern was it almost felt like they were trying to shoo us off the place since more people were coming in and they needed our table. My friends and I were eating and chatting quite slowly. Our waitress kept checking on us and asking if she could clear out any plates. She also gave us our bill before we asked for it, stating that she'd leave it there 'whenever we're ready'. I didn't think there was a need to do that.

I would definitely come back here again. Decent price for quite big portions, I'm on board! Overall rating 7.5/10

Good grub... service not so much
Submitted Sunday, April 6, 2008 - 4:43am [Dine in]

My friends and I went here to celebrate because 1 of my friends just got engaged. My first time dining here all I could remember was the amazing food and the good service. When I returned a week ago, the grub was still impressive but we got a not so impressive server.

We were told we were to wait 45 minutes to be seated since it was busy that evening. It didn't even take 20 minutes and we were seated. The chips and salsa is always good in my book. I ordered the salmon burrito because it sounded interesting. To my surprise it was actually really good. 2 of my friends who tried it said they'd rather have what I was having than what they were. I tried my friend's beef enchilada and it was okay. Nothing very special about it. I did like the strawberry margaritas. It was very refreshing. Then we had the churros for dessert. Their churros is the perfect end to a satisfying meal.

On the other hand, the service, in my opinion could have been alot better. Our waitress kept passing by us and I found it hard to get her attention because she was busy tending to the other tables nearby. It took so long to get a glass of water and it seemed she'd rather be somewhere else than serve us. She did smile at us on the rare occasion.

Nothing special about the ambiance. It just felt like a regular dining place to me. Overall 7 out of 10

Fairly decent place

2 of my friends recommended this place so I brought my family here for my brother's birthday. My first impression was that it was a sophisticated atmosphere. Candle lit tables and soft linens but quite chic. Right away I felt that it was a place where you bring your friends and socialize or a place to bring your date. Nevertheless, the food and service was pretty solid. We had the Bison Carpaccio and the Waldorf to start. The carpaccio was excellent, the aioli was a nice complement to the dish. My mom and I enjoyed the creme fraiche and the panna cotta in the Waldorf.

I had the Duck as my entree. Wonderfully cooked, it had a nice crisp and a tender meat. I also tried my brother's Cod, i found the fish cooked just right; although, I thought the risotto was a bit undercooked. I found that they also had quite an extensive wine list.

The service was okay. It took more than half an hour for our food to come. Our server was very accommodating though. He apologized because the food was late. Bathroom wise, I thought it was going to be a fancy bathroom, it wasn't as fancy as I thought it was going to be, but it was nice enough to not be uncomfortable.
