Unfortunate Server in a Generally Great Place!
Submitted Monday, April 20, 2009 - 10:08pm [Dine in]

I've been to enigma a number of times, usually with my girlfriends, and almost all of those visits have been pleasant. Though the restaurant does boast a fairly large menu, there is something for everyone because of it, and so i can't complain.

Unfortunately, i was there with my friend last week for dinner and we had some of the most unfortunate service I've ever experienced there. I don't know if this guy was having a bad day, or if he was stressed, or if he was just plain off his game, but one thing he wasn't was attentive.

I arrived a few minutes before my friend, and they had a play-off special, $3.75 DRAFT PINTS!! (Exceptional in Vancouver!!) Anyway, my beer came quickly, but when she had arrived, it took him a solid 10 minutes to acknowledge her presence and then another 10 to grab a beer from the bar! I could understand this if it was busy, but this server had maybe 4 tables, and the time that we spent waiting for her drink i noticed him standing at the bar chatting with people instead of pouring anything.

Food was good, and came in a reasonable amount of time, but our request for ketchup (with fries...should've been at the table already?) went unanswered until we asked another server for it (Who was fantastically friendly and amicable i might add, kind've wished he'd been our server! -- Ask for the blonde guy with short hair and glasses next time you go!)

So we got our ketchup and ate our dinners, but when we were done, we sat there for another good 15 minutes chatting with dirty dishes at our table before he even came over to clear them :( Having your old dinner stare you in the face is not a pleasant experience.

When we wanted to pay, we had to ask for our bill (as he didn't come back again after clearing) and then had to go up and wait for him as it didn't show up at the table in the next 10 minutes. Waiting for the bill is the worst i think, it can put such a downer on your evening.

All that being said, the food was good and everyone else we interacted with in the restaurant was extremely pleasant, it seems that they're selective about their staff, so i'll give this experience a mulligan and just avoid the big, broad, dark haired guy with the well-groomed hair next time :)

I'd recommend this restaurant, and will be going back there in spite of this most recent experience!

Presto Cucina2272 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Great Spot for Delicious Pizza!
Submitted Monday, April 20, 2009 - 9:57pm [Dine in]

Oh man, what i wouldn't do for this place to deliver!! One up-side of that little inconsistency however, is that the in-house experience is not a total mess, as in most restaurants famous for their take out. Presto has bar-none some of the TASTIEST pizza i've ever had. Boyfriend and I were in the other week during the day; restaurant was dead but service was excellent as a result! He started with the mussels, which were delicious, and then i followed with a personal-size garlic chicken pizza and he had a panini. Though the drinks there are a tad expensive, the food really is fantastic! The only change i would suggest is a more inviting atmosphere -- though the italian-inspired design is nice, it feels quite cold and echo-y inside :(
All in all, a great little spot we go to often, and will continue to do so!

Never Had a Bad Experience
Submitted Monday, April 20, 2009 - 8:19pm [Dine in]

I don't know what a lot of the reviewers before me were expecting, but if you're at all familiar with Vancouver's chain restaurants, you know that milestone's is a great middle-of-the-road alternative to the pretentious air that hangs around Cactus Club, Joeys, or Earls. It's a family friendly, middle-tier menued venue and one should expect just that as a patron. If you want nouvelle cuisine, go CinCin and pay three times the price!
My boyfriend and I regularly visit this Milestone's location and we have yet to leave unhappy. Yes, there have been a couple of times where we've waited a bit longer than we'd like for our drinks, and yes it has occasionally taken a little while for a server to see us, but regardless, we never LEAVE unhappy. WIth any problem we have (and we usually don't even have to mention that it's a problem) the service team does an outstanding job to make it right.
One example, last time we were in on a weekday night, my boyfriend and i both had salads (big dessert waiting at home for us :)), he enjoyed 2 pints of their draft honey lager and i had a glass of red wine. The wine, in my opinion, wasn't the best but I had ordered it and it wasn't off, so I just didn't drink it. I would've been happy to pay for it, as it was my decision to order it, but it was taken off of our bill and we were offered a complimentary dessert automatically!
The staff there always exceeds my expectations, and as a server myself, i believe that's saying something. I must say it's refreshing to be served by someone other than an air-brained 20 year-old blonde in a mini skirt. The service staff at milestone's does a great job, and earn their tips accordingly!

Pinky's Steakhouse & Cocktail Lounge1873 W. 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Poor Sibling to Yaletown
Submitted Thursday, October 23, 2008 - 6:22pm [Dine in]

I was so excited to hear about a Pinky's opening up in my neighbourhood, as I'm a huge fan of the Yaletown location (amazing food, fabulous service and a fairly upscale feel). Unfortunately, my first visit to the Kits location was fairly disappointing. Though the decor is nice, the restaurant's feel is much more casual -- think Cactus Club -- as are the staff.
Though our service was good, I was a little surprised at what some of the girls were wearing (again, think cactus/earls) for a supposedly upscale-casual experience. Our server was efficient and friendly, but wasn't able to explain any of the dishes we inquired about past regurgitating what was on the menu.
Our food was good, though for a filet, my steak was slightly tough (something i attribute to the meat itself and place no fault in the kitchen for) and the baked potato was, well, a baked potato. My friend had the potato-crusted halibut, which he enjoyed, but would not likely order again based on price. Portions were ample, but for 34$ i wouldn't have minded a veggie option with my steak. For dessert I opted for the chocolate ice cream (decadent!) and my friend had the key-lime pie. Both were delicious, and i was pleasantly surprised to hear that they were made in-house.
Overall, if you're going to Pinky's, i would hands down recommend the Yaletown location for service alone, but if you're just in for a quick bite and some cocktails the kits location would do just fine.

On another note, the Kits location IS brand new, so i feel (and hope) after a few more months to iron things out they may up the bar a bit.
