Genji Japanese Restaurant7533 Market Crossing, Burnaby
Koreans trying to run a Japanese Restaurant
Submitted Sunday, June 8, 2008 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

i work in industrial area behind the mall this restaurant is in and i was thrilled that they were opening up a japanese restaurant. Having lived in Japan as an english teacher many years ago i've learned 'GENJI' is a very high class tradition japanese name. I was disappointed to find out they were owned by Koreans but i still gave them the benefit of the doubt. But the waitress did not even speak communicable english. I asked some very simple request and she couldn't understand me. Food was mediocre definitely not worth the amt they are charging. For lunch time i can easily drive up to kingsway and get jap food for better price and better quality. My bill was almost 30 dollars and all i ordered was a salad, 2 rolls and a bowl of rice. that's ridiculous! i usually get the same stuff wherever i have japanese food and usually it's around 20 dollars. If the quality doesn't match the price. they're not going to be around for long, but perhaps people are catching on, it's never busy anymore everytime i drive by these days.

all the reviews below me basically sums it up. food is fantastic. i love the 4 course menu. service was fantastic, both my wine glass and water glass were never empty. The rack of lamb was out of this world. great portion. My date had the halibut and that was equally fantastic. and for dessert with had a cheese plate and the sorbet. the sorbets were really good. ambiance was warming, very sophisticated crowd. definitely going back.

Very nice and simple decor. My date and i thought it was funny that underneath the tablecloth they're just chinatown brand tables. nevertheless, decor is very cozy and functional. The open kitchen setting is great too. It was a friday night, so perhaps they were too busy to keep tabs on the food quality. other than the soup with the scallop (which was INCREDIBLE) everything else just kinda went downhill from there. FOOD TOOK FOREVER! our server was very nice to keep informing us that our food is on its way. Food tasted pretty bland. I'd definitely go back, but probably on a more quiet night to give Fuel a second chance.
