Sushi California501A North Rd, Coquitlam
Good alternative to pizza delivery/take out
Submitted Tuesday, June 25, 2013 - 9:13pm [Take-out]

Before placing the take-out order at the counter I was told that the wait was 10 minutes, 40 minutes later got the food and two miso soups as an apology. If you must, order over the phone. The place seems chaotic and service rushed and the dining are a bit on a dirty side so wouldn't recommend dining there. The sushi is not bad, the portions are generous and fresh, the quality of preparation is hit and miss depending on which person behind the counter prepared your food, sometimes you get it nicely put together sometimes a falling apart mess. Cheap and large "Japanese" style grub, not a fine dining by any means but then again the place never aspired to be one.

Good for drinks but skip the overpriced and sub standard food fare
Submitted Monday, August 22, 2011 - 5:41pm [Dine in]

Went for lunch with some coworkers. We waited 40 minutes for food and at no point the waitress showed up to apologize for the long wait. Ordered a salmon burger which turned out to be a half a finger thin piece of overcooked salmon that would need a help of a gallon of water to chew and swallow. Sent the food back and ordered a seared tuna salad that was mediocre to say the least. My coworker ordered a medium rare steak that showed up well done. I guess it was still sizzling on its long journey to the table.
This is a good place for after work drink but for good food look somewhere else.

It's a gem in the rough - authentic Japanese food at reasonable price
Submitted Sunday, December 26, 2010 - 5:32pm [Dine in]

We used to eat occasionally at Matoi downtown and we were curious about their new location in Coquitlam which is much closer to our house.
Well, Matoi didn't disappoint. The sushi is the right size, the fish is super fresh and the rice is right consistency and taste. They have a nice variety of fresh fish if you want to venture beyond tuna and salmon.
The decor is nice and the service is good, although there seem to be a bit of confusion from time to time, which is understandable considering the fact that the wait staff is new.
We'll definitely go back and we're really glad that Matoi graduated from a little stand in the grocery store to a full-service restaurant. This is definitely our favorite sushi restaurant.

Worst Mexican food I ever had - don't waste you time nor money!
Submitted Sunday, September 12, 2010 - 7:36pm [Dine in]

Since the restaurant is in the hood me and my wife decided to give it shot one Sunday around lunch time.
The ambiance was as expected from a cheap restaurant and the service was good and attentive. Unfortunately the food was way below expectations and we didn't expect a lot knowing that to find decent Mexican food in Vancouver Metro is rather impossible. We have traveled in Mexico several times and love their street food. The chicken tacos were bland tasting and lettuce was the quesadilla's major ingredient. The red salsa was made from un-ripe tomatoes. The food is also not cheap. We definitely won't go back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone we care about.
It's a shame because the place is in a tough location (previous tenant Taco Del Mar survived only a few months there) so good food it their only hope to attract customers. Any taco stand south of the border beats them by a mile.

Good for take-out!

Korean style sushi with Chinese style service - won't go back! Waited for food for 20 minutes, waitresses to busy to serve take-out to pay attention to the dining customers. Agedashi tofu arrived with almost no sauce to dip. The sushi and sashimi looked big and sloppy. This was is grub with no presentation that Japanese food deserves.
Good take out if you wanna have a lot of mediocre over-sized sushi for not a lot of money.

The best sushi in Vancouver
Submitted Thursday, August 6, 2009 - 11:37pm [Dine in]

Korean owner trained in Japan married to Japanese woman; they know how a "real" sushi should taste like and they deliver - this is as close as you can get to the sushi you'll find in Japan. Perfectly sized, high quality, consistent. I'll eat there any time I have a chance - a real treat in the ocean of super-sized mediocrity!
