Somebody Get Me A Drink!
Submitted Wednesday, October 21, 2009 - 6:15pm [Dine in]

Hi came here with my family and had a quick linner meal a couple weeks ago. Simply, the food is mediocre and although I can't remember the names of the soups I had, they were all extremely filled with MSG and left me gasping for water. The pasta was much too salty as I could feel me hair fall out of my head while eating! The service was decent, just like most other "grill restaurants" of this genre, but the food was not good at all....

Not a Bad Place For Hungry Hot Pot People
Submitted Monday, March 16, 2009 - 2:36pm [Dine in]

My fiancee and I are among many people who eat out a lot. We usually eat Chubby Lamb Hot Pot in Richmond but thought to try Top Gun a few weeks ago -- quite solid food and service during weekdays. It was unusual, however pleasantly surprising to have a cart full of different sauces to choose from; I would recommend getting an extra scoop of satay sauce to balance the flavours.

The menu is well rounded, although the balls are not quite as fresh as my benchmark, Chubby Lamb. The sliced beef is lean and tender. It happens to be my main reason for eating there, along with the wonton and dumplings. Satay soup is always my preference, but again, not as up to par to Chubby Lamb, but not bad.

For the proximity to my house and decency of the quality of food, I would actually rate this a 3.5-4 out of 5 stars. Service I'm sure is better on weekdays than on weekends, as usual for most places. Give it a try and see what you think.

Quite Tasty

After reading these reviews, my fiancee and I decided to try this place out. You sit at an oval bar where each person has their own small hot pot bowl (shabu shabu). Hopefully the person across from you isn't always looking at you.

The dipping sauce is almost the most tastiest (I'm a sause fan so I get 3-4), and the set meals are quite filling. Each meal comes with lthe main order plus lots of veggies and a small variety of other things, which is not as much as you'd get for paying the same price for all you can eat hot pot, but is still good value. Meals are $15-20 on average. My fiancee loves the sliced fish meal, and I get the short rib meal.

Don't get spicy soup (too spicy and no flavour), get plain. Most side dishes expensive - 4 balls/$3.50. Slushies come with the meal, we love their slushies! Staff is friendly. All in all, a great place to eat!

Chubby Lamb Is Sure To Make You Chubby...With A Big Smile!

This restaurant is an absolute favourite on my list because of its quality of food and the prompt service. I'll have to admit that at first, their hospitality was not quite up to par as I'd hoped it would be, but the workers proved to still be efficient, hard working and attentive. During the next few visits, they greatly warmed up to our familiar faces and have since been very accomodating as well as much more cheerful in our presence. They frequently refill your soup base with chicken broth; a world of a difference for your tastebuds as opposed to plain, hot water . Mashed garlic, cilantro, jalapenos, green onions, satay sauce, sesame sauce, and soy sauce are standard add-ons, something other places charge extra for.
I've never had such scrumptious, fresh rolled, balls (of all flavours) from anywhere like this, ever! The KEY word to all the ingredients in this tasty meal is FRESH! Fresh from the vegetables, to the meat, to the noodles, to the balls, and all of the above. I highly recommend ordering the "Special Beef" slices -- expensive and mouth watering! Nothing compares...please, take my word, as a meat lover myself!
I also must applaud their selection of appetizing soup bases. It does cost a little extra for 2 soups but well worth it. My fiancee and I enjoy a balance of flavours, so we usually order the Satay/Mushroom soups or the Tom Yum/Mushrooms soup bases. The Tom Yum base balances the harmony of Salty/Sour/Spicy flavours into one savory experience, and the Mushroom soup is the lighter, more earthy counterpart. Their plum juice is also quite pleasant -- light and thirst quenching.
Becuase of their profound success, the restaurant requires reservations in advance. For food lovers and especially hot pot lovers, Chubby Lamb is the ultimate food experience for your starved stomach. Fresh food, great service, superb value, and incredible soups is this restaurant's recipe for repeat customers....and I'm definitely one of them!
