More a sports bar than anything

I agree with other reviewers that it was a well-lit, cozy diner with plush booths with decent diner-type food. We went for lunch on a Monday with our two and four year old boys. Pros: They have high chairs and a kids menu at $6.99 with drink and dessert and handed out crayons to the boys. Cons: My two year old said, “mommie, why she not wearing pants?” referring to the hostess in a miniskirt. I looked around and saw TSN streaming from all corners of the place along with dedicated screens for each of the four counter seats and other scantily clad and busty waitresses, I realized that this was a place vying for sports bar traffic. This was something we did not notice during our first visit for Sunday brunch months ago. It is located in a strip mall with a Club 16 fitness so I guess that makes sense. Just not a place I’d take my family with young children again.

Following a building fire that shut all the businesses down for a few weeks. Sarpino's re-opened with a $4.99 12 inch pizza special for take out orders. After about a month of staring at this deal on a sandwich board walking up and down 8th St, I finally took the bait.

The service was fast. Literally a five minute wait. The cashier was no nonsense. The pizza, after all, was only one step above frozen, with a bready crust, slightly below typical pizza by the slice places. Why the low score on value, and the motivation for my writing? Despite being cheap eats, I was not at all prepared for the underhanded way they shoved a packet of ranch dressing in my box of pizza while asking "Ranch?" I blurted out a, "sure" and realized when I got back to my office that I had paid 50 cents for it.

Not since my travels in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe have I had to keep my guard up for these kinds of antics. Buyer beware.

I proselytize about this place to anyone who would listen. Once, I even convinced a van full of Boeing engineers to take a detour from their ride home to try the burgers there.
This is a franchised chain and I’ve been to four locations in the great LA area and now the one in Saskatoon. Despite having what I consider the best meat and buns I’ve ever had, the stores are folding and here is why: the restaurants are huge, barn sized affairs complete with their own bakery and butcher shop, arcade games hall, and indoor/outdoor seating.
Here are the goods: the in store meat shop and bakery supply the kitchen with fresh ingredients. The burger patties aren’t seasoned until just before they hit the grill. You choose the size of the burger, ranging from 1/3 to 1 full pound of meat. The fixings are self-service and the toppings bar, complete with even pump cheese for nachos, would rival any salad bar. Unrelated to the hamburger but noteworthy is the self-service fountain drinks, coffee, and that the place is licensed.

A rundown little café devoid of gloss and glamour: specials posted on colored copier paper the Korean couple couldn’t fit on the marquee, something they likely inherited from the previous operator. A narrow counter runs along the glass windows, and a few wobbly tables are bunched together in the middle with small baskets of ketchup, mustard, and vinegar. Laborers were eating here, and a lady from the Salvation Army across the street came in to place a large order for her clients. It is refreshingly hard to love, a working man’s café.
What it lacks in style, it makes up for in substance: hand formed patties smashed down on the grill, real bacon (or mushroom), a slice of processed cheese, topped and steam finished with fixings, if you want, and a soft, pillow-y Kaiser bun, lightly toasted with a little mayo. I disagree with other reviewers that the fries are fresh cut. The fries have the skin left on but it is still from frozen. Frozen fries have gotten smarter. But all this and a can of pop for $5.69 plus HST.
You won’t discover anything amazing here, no holy grail of burgers, no overwrought, organically passionate proprietors with an easy grin, no themes harkening on our insatiable appetite for the nostalgic. Just good and cheap burgers that you can feel guilty about eating and loving and, perhaps, this is the best discovery of all.

The Real Deal in the Heartland

First heard about this place when it was featured on SCN, the now defunct public television station in Saskatchewan. A really nice story of someone who is trying to re-create the flavours from his homeland in the prairies. I skipped the plates that charge you essentially $5 for beans and rice (fillers) and opted to order two of each kinds of tacos, empanadas, quesadillas, and tamales for about $1.75 each. The portions left me wanting, but the flavours were dead on except for the tamales which were made with too much broth/liquid and not enough masa harina (perhaps they were running low?).

Loved the funky, bohemian decor and Mexican groceries when you walk in. Would have dined in but Uncle insisted it was a shady part of town.

Ordered take out on an early Saturday evening. Walked in and was intrigued by the simple, pared down menu, something drilled into me by watching Restaurant Makeover and Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmare, that good restaurants focus on a few things and do them well.

So I was disapointed when the vegetable currie that included in the description: fresh, local greens turns out to be frozen mixed vegetables and our chicken curry had the distinct aroma of something quickly reheated in the microwave. I distinctly recall while waiting for my food the owner made a point to tell me that the restaurant was so empty because they were catering a wedding that night. It made very little sense then, and it still makes little sense how their involvement with a wedding had anything to do with how many customers were eating there.

When you are curious about the wings, and you ask the disheveled drone taking your order how they are, and he tells you he doesn't eat there, then you've got the restaurant owner's blues...

What followed was the loveless special: pulled pork on a bun with a heap of shredded (vs. pulled) pork piled on a cold, dry bun and covered in a barbecue sauce that was more Kraft than hand-crafted. The fries, herbed with garlic salt, was good, but James Brown didn't get soulful about french fries, and this is a place trying to invoke the South, right? What else just wasn't right? A piece of cornbread the size of triscuits piled three high on my plate. Cornbread, as important to southern barbecue as the saxophone is to the blues.

Read about how the owners stopped in Memphis and fell in love. They went back and brought the barbecue home. I just wished they had brought the love back with them, too.

Once you get through the 18 levels of over-branding hell (the comic book store decor, the cryptic menu names (Hawaiian is called Greed), the seemingly endless supply of puns built into its namesake, etc.), what you'll find is decent delivery styled pizza with interesting flavor combinations and good friendly staff.

Be warned: It is unspectacular. But you should come anyway because it's the only place around here with a menu dedicated to Taiwanese dishes. This should mean nothing to you unless you've spent time in Taiwan and miss it. Pork chops pound thin, then dipped in sweet potato starch and fried, colorful posterboard cutouts as wall decor, staff whom you suspect live above the restaurant or at least seem too "at home" and make no pretense about looking busy.

It felt strange to be waited on when all I wanted was a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The cakes were sitting behind the glass counter by the entrance which I could have pointed to, on my way in, for slicing and taken to my seat with no need for the masquerade of a tableside service. Maybe if someone opened a restaurant and served only appetizers and had waiters come by and take your order for drinks and food, it would also be seen as weird. Oh, wait a minute, someone did. It’s called a bar. Perhaps it’s the ubiquity of the self-service coffeehouse that puts me at odds with accepting wait-staff for coffee and cake. The cakes—we tried three kinds—like their prices (room on the bandwagon?), were decadent and cloying.

It was a busy Thursday evening in this alley of an eatery painted in Latin market pastel and awashed in tungsten yellow, complete with Our Lady of Guadalupe. I had the deal, four meat tacos for $9.50, and ordered chicken mole, al pastor, carnitas, and the special of the day, lamb birria. While waiting, I watched the cooks spoon heaps of onion and cilantro on the tacos and I listened to a young couple telling the proprietor that they were from Philly and that they had already been here on a previous night. I took my four tacos to the park on the corner and sat on the concrete bench and ate them and licked the juices from my fingers and wished I had four more to eat before giving up and wandering back up Cambie to the station. The tacos were appy-size small but a nice little reminiscence nonetheless.

Large pub styled burgers ranging from the basic, for $11 to $16, through to the ridiculous with eight patties at $29. We came with a buy one get one free (up to a $10 value) coupon widely available in the New West Recorder (Hence the 4 rating). I had the breakfast burger topped with a fried egg and paid $2 more for onion rings and wondered if the waitress ate half of them while walking it over to our table. The beef had an off taste which reminded me of frozen meat thawed quickly in a microwave. There was also an unpleasant taste to the fixings but I couldn't quite pinpoint it. Perhaps it was just an off day. I loved the decor with old photos of patrons from years past with their mullets, beach-themed tees, unironic moustaches and aviator sunglasses plastered all over the walls and under the glass top of tables. The waitress was part of this local institution and seemed to know everyone, including those in our party. Enjoyed the sincere, relaxed interaction.

From its history, recommends in guide books, and numerous awards in Northshore news, I was anticipating a Guy Fieri Triple D type experience but was disappointed. I Ioved the authentic teak, diner throw back decor left in place from a different era with chocolate bars, candies, and bubble gum for sale at the till. The breakfast was lackluster with potatoes clearly from frozen, and the unique twist: "Yukon-styled" bacon, back bacon with ample marbling, not worth the trip. Felt that it was not bad but also not worth the $11 paid. Went back a second time during a weekday for the "reader’s choice" burger and was disappointed to be paying $12 for a dainty, fast-food portioned burger that failed to live up to its chieftain-inspired name (even if the beef were organic). I agree with other reviewers in adding that the waitresses not only fail to tend to your needs, they plain outright seem to be hiding from the diners behind the prep counter which ultimately robbed me of a wonderful indulgence: washing down my greasy diner breakfast and burger with cups upon cups of weak diner coffee.

A hidden gem tucked away from view just a stone's throw from Lonsdale. We went for Sunday brunch but opted for a la carte instead of the $16 all you can eat super buffet which included a dozen different meats, a beef roast carving station, ribs, waffle station, and a spread of cakes, pies, and other sweets. We struggled to find dishes above $8 ($7 for eggs benny with smoked salmon). Chicken fingers were hand rolled in bread crumbs and generously portioned (5 large pieces) and for $5 ($13 if you order 3 appie's). Surprised to learn they had Granville Island Pale Ale on tap ($4). And with a burger and fries special for $6, I'm certain to return for Monday Night Football to watch on their two flatscreens in the main dining room. Large, catering-oriented place meant we didn't have to wait for a table for 5 adults and 2 toddlers. Clientele is seniors (and their respective service clubs) and service was slow (we had to ask for coffee refills each time) but understandable on account of it being geared for buffet service on Sundays. Now the real find: American diner-styled shredded hash browns. I'm home at last.
