A little better than average
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2009 - 12:25pm [Dine in]

A group of four went out to celebrate a friend's b-day... He's just moved back to BC and was hankering for some decent Greek food. He had fond memories of this place... After reading the previous reviews, I was a little hesitant... I should have told him to go to Greektown next time he's in Toronto...

Food: Portions are quite generous... You won't leave here hungry but I have to agree with other posters... I usually associate Greek food with lots of herbs, garlic and tangy citrus - very savoury... the roast lamb for which they are "famous" for wasn't as good as I could have made at home... If it's not better than homemade, why bother going out? It was upper shank cut which isn't the best cut in the world... We shared vegetarian dolmades which weren't bad.

Service: was pretty good... Our server was quite friendly and accomodating... We chatted her up as we were leaving...

Value: Prices could be lower and portions smaller and/or quality better... For me quality of food is more important than quantity...

Ambiance: A pretty good "faux-taverna" Greek look... but you get the feeling the restaurants best days are behind it...

I did a takeout order yesterday from the only Jamaican restaurant on the North Shore... I went there when it first opened up this summer and I have to say it's improved quite a bit... I had the Jerk Chicken with Rice and Peas. I asked the cook/chef to drizzle a little oxtail gravy on the R&P... No problem... He even threw some oxtail meat on the rice... Sweet! (that gets extra points for effort)... The Chicken skin was slightly crispy and had a nice kick from the scotch bonnett peppers... Just like it's supposed to be... The Rice and Peas were quite improved since the last time... The oxtail gravy was scorching hot! I hope this place makes it, because the owner seems like a nice guy and the food represents a much-needed tropical escape from the Winter blues...

Great Family Place...
Submitted Saturday, November 22, 2008 - 1:32pm [Dine in]

It was a cold and wet Vancouver Friday night... My wife and I were looking for a little tropical "pick-me up" and checked out the reviews... Thai Pudpong seemed to fit the bill and it didn't disappoint. Our server Mani (who I believe is an owner) was gracious, funny and extremely welcoming. He is so attentive... he helped my wife put on her coat as we were leaving. The food is excellent... The Tom Kha Gai (chicken cocunut soup) was one of the best I've ever had. My wife shared the soup and the deep-fried crab & shrimp roll. The roll was very good and different from the garden variety... the shrimp tail sticks out from the end... nice touch.

The mains were good. We had a good quantity of rice (asked for two servings) to accompany the beef red curry and my wife's vegetable stir fry with peanut sauce. We specified we wanted medium heat and everything was just perfect. A great blend of the traditional thai tastes... Sweet, sour and spicy. We told Mani we would be back... He joked "Tomorrow, I hope..."

If you're in the neighbourhood and are looking to support a nice family restaurant and enjoy some simple, authentic Thai food, this is the place.

Impressed!... the reviews are right
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 8:27pm [Dine in]

Came here with a client for lunch today. My client had the pea soup with mint with a main dish with risotto. She especially loved the risotto. I had the prix fixe ($30) which included a dungeness crab salad with hollandaise, a chicken breast and a desert. The dungeness crab was the height of freshness, the chicken was excellent and firm and the desert was amazing - they called it a soda pop, I think. Our server was a little on the young side, but was very good at what he did... he just seemed a little uncertain sometimes. The decor is top notch... It's a great place to bring a client without breaking the bank (a la Yew!).

My fave Szechuan Place...
Submitted Wednesday, April 30, 2008 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

I love this place... I did some takeout last night. For a neighbourhood place, it's exceptional. Their szechuan style green beans is one of my favourite dishes anywhere... They put so much garlic on it, it's almost unbelievable... Their Chicken with chilies and garlic is also very good... It's so good, I sometimes fantasize about their food and can't wait to go back to get some more... in the same league as Green Lettuce on Victoria and Kingsway.

Their service is very professional and efficient. The only downside is their ambiance... it won't bowl you over - that's why I usually I do takeout. I can't think of a better place for szechuan in the lower mainland other than chonquing on Commercial.. and that's a very close tie...

Good Dim Sum, Excellent Service...
Submitted Wednesday, April 30, 2008 - 10:23pm [Dine in]

I found Luxe a cut above the rest when it comes to Dim Sum... No surly service here... the wait staff are exceedingly professional and helpful. They fill your tea pot with hot water without asking for it. They ask you if you'd like hot sauce... Wow! Like I said, it's not like the typical way I'm treated during dim sum. The dishes are beautiful and delicate - not your typical dim sum garbage service... The skylight is covered with a translucent sheet to make the light more diffuse. All this wouldn't matter if the food wasn't prepared competently or wasn't fresh... The dim sum was quite good. I had the Haa gau, sui mai, tripe with ginger and curried squid. All of it was top notch and fresh to boot. I wouldn't hesitate brining a client to this place.... I'll be back and so should you.

Didn't wow me...
Submitted Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 8:05pm [Dine in]

Came here with a client for lunch today. We had the escargots and a terrine as appies. We shared the Coq au vin for a main meal. The food was prepared competently... Terrine could have been a little more moist and escargots at a french restaurant is a little cliche, but anyway... Service could have been better... our server (who I assume is also the owner) didn't ask if I wanted my drink refreshed (I did). As well there was a black hair in the bread basket... I didn't want to say anything because my client thankfully didn't go for the bread... I wouldn't go out of my way for this place... Le Crocodile is my fave place for French food in the lower mainland.

Get a Second Mortgage Before Coming Here....
Submitted Thursday, April 3, 2008 - 6:40pm [Dine in]

I wish Dinehere.ca had a "value for money" rating... If that's the case, YEW would rate very poorly. I came for lunch here yesterday with a client... yes, the food was amazing, yes, the service was great, yes, the Four Seasons has done a great job with the re-design, but damn it's expensive! My client and I had two soups, two salads, two cran-sodas, 1 coffee... and the bill (with tip) was over 100$. I nearly choked. If you come here, make sure you have an expense account, or a creative accountant... My coconut asparagus soup was fantastic, but at 12 bucks, pricey. I also had the salade nicoice... again, creatively put together, but the portion was tiny. I felt like I should have went over to Mickey D's to get a burger to fill me up afterwards.

Submitted Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 11:36pm [Dine in]

Came here for lunch last week. I am a fan of the Tandoori King on Scott, but Original Tandoori Kitchen gives these guys a run for their money. I had their Lunch special and I was amazed with the quantity and quality of their food. The Lunch special was 16.95 and included... quarter tandoori chicken (leg - moist and amazing), saag paneer (very tasty), lamb curry (OK), butter chicken (Amazing), daal, raita, naan and a desert! The quality was amazing... everything was very flavourful and not overpowering.

As Arnold Schwarzenegger says... I'll be back....

Can't wait to try their other menu items...

The long line ups are usually a good sign... Good food at good prices mean people are willing to waste their time in a lineup... These guys are masters at Shawarmas. As other have mentioned, come here for a takeout since the place is usually too small to accomodate sit-down diners... it's really crowded... The chicken and lamb shawarmas are a thing of beauty. The owner even puts an aluminum foil on the chicken/lamb to keep the heat concentrated on the surface of the shawarma... that's a man on a mission... Spices are amazing... Every time I come back I become more addicted to their cuisine.

If you come from Halifax or Ottawa, you'll appreciate Babylon cafe... It's hard to explain, but for those of you from those cities will understand what a good shawarma represents for the true fast food foodie...

Great Neighbourhood Find!
Submitted Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

Came here for supper with my bride this evening. We had spent a romantic afternoon together so this thought a nice Italian supper would be a great way to end things... I wasn't disappointed... The service was above average, the food came quickly (almost too quickly) but I have to say I was happy with this find in North Vancouver. I had the Linguine della Casa, which is a pasta dish with a creamy curry sauce with Spotted prawns (nice touch) with diced tomatoes. The pasta was Al Dente, as expected and the lentil soup was also excellent. My wife had the al fredo pasta which she enjoyed as well.

As far as neighbourhood places go, this is a very solid choice. I don't think this is a "destination" restaurant like a Vij's but if you live in the North Shore and are looking for a solid italian restaurant at reasonable prices, Bravo Cucina will make you happy.

Great Hole in the Wall Shawarma Place!
Submitted Saturday, March 22, 2008 - 11:42pm [Dine in]

I ate here twice in the past month... I used to live in Ottawa which had an extremely competitive Lebanese cuisine scene... no bad shawarma here... I had been very disappointed with the arab fast food scene since I moved here over a couple of years ago... until I came to Baghdad Cafe... Their chicken shawarma pita was amazing... you could really taste the carbonized bits and the mint in their sauces. All of their condiments are really fresh. My only complaint is the narrow width of their restaurant... you can't move inside without bumping into the weird counter chairs behind you... Anyway, if you're looking for good "fast-food" arab fare, this is the place to go downtown...

Took out a client here for lunch on Thursday. We weren't too hungry so we had some appetizers instead... I had the Chicken Tandoori quesadilla (excellent with the mango chutney) and my client had the hawaiian poke. The girls who work at this place are quite visually appealing. It can be a little distracting when you're trying to do business ;-) The place was packed, which I guess is a testament to it's quality and presentation.

Excellent place for a corporate event...
Submitted Friday, March 21, 2008 - 4:33pm [Dine in]

Hosted a supper here with 10 clients a couple of days ago. The crew at Blue Water do a great job of accomodating requests. We had a couple of seafood towers - shrimp, oysters, scallops in shell, all on ice. I had the beef tenderloin which was cooked to perfection. Everyone else loved their dish - white sturgeon was the other choice...

What is great about this restaurant is the ambiance and the service. The service is professional and attentive. The decor, with the exposed brick and the wall to wall wines makes quite an impression. The evening came to 180 dollars per person but was definitely worth it.

A colleague and I ate here for lunch yesterday. We shared three dishes for about 20 bucks plus tip... pretty sweet deal. Singapore vermicelli was quite good and plentiful, hainanese chicken was bland and the seafood noodle "mini-wok" was just OK. Service was quite quick but the menu has a couple of issues with it... Many menu items which are nearly identical and interchangeable and there are NO vegetable dishes whatsoever... Trust me, I looked. Service was pretty good for an asian restaurant. Come here if you're in the neighbourhood, but don't come out of your way...

A great taste of Singapore...
Submitted Saturday, March 1, 2008 - 12:02pm [Dine in]

Had lunch here on Friday a little before 1 PM... The place was packed and we eventually sat at the bar for lunch. They have a set lunch menu for 2, 3 or 4 people... The two of us opted for the "three" size for 36 bucks... we were hungry. The hainanese chicken is awesome... it's a cold dish but the chicken is very tasty. The Sambal Seafood was also quite good... shrimp and squid in a tasty and spicy tomato-based sauce. The gai lan was... just OK. Go for the roti prata as an appetizer. I've been to Singapore and Malaysia and the food tastes quite authentic (Banana Leaf, please take note... ahem.)

The service here is quite good - congenial and are willing to have a conversation, even when it's busy.

A step up from PHO
Submitted Thursday, February 28, 2008 - 6:40pm [Dine in]

I'm used to the delicate blending of tastes of vietnamese pho... The taiwanese soup here is made with beef (like pho), but the broth is really hearty and the noodles are made with wheat flour instead of rice. the noodles are chunky, thick and velvety. A small soup was about 7.50, which I thought was very reasonable. I didn't leave hungry... I came in at around 1 PM for lunch and it was still full... a good sign. Service is quite efficient and the food comes out quickly as well. The place is kind of small with limited seating.

Came here with a client for lunch... better than expected. Even got my parking validated after we paid for lunch! I had the Wild Salmon Tandoori Salad which was quite good because it had generous chunks of mango which married quite well with the grilled salmon. The dressing was a nice light vinaigrette. The salad was nice and light, yet filling. What I like about this location is you can carry on a good conversation without being drowned out by the background noise (take a hint, Italian Kitchen). I'd come back for lunch...

Great Little Discovery on Scott Road
Submitted Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 11:11pm [Dine in]

I was driving on Scott Road on my way to White Rock for meetings. It was around 1:30 and hadn't eaten all day. I saw this place and decided to stop - WTF, why not... Anyway, I was the only person in the restaurant but the owner was at a table in the back with a couple of his buddies. Anyway, the guy comes over, he's very friendly and asks me if I've ever tried tandoor - I assured him I was a tandoor veteran... Anyway, I ordered the quarter chicken tandoori chicken, raiti, naan, desert, rice and a lentil daal - all for less than ten bucks. I was very impressed! A full meal deal. I thought the chicken was excellent - very moist and savoury. The owner said I wouldn't leave hungry and he was right... he even offered to bring me a second mango lassi for free... Nice touch. I hope these guys do well because their portion size, quality and hospitality are all in the +++ column. I will be back.

Submitted Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 3:06pm [Dine in]

The bride and I went for supper here since we were schlepping around Commercial drive and I was too lazy to cook. We've been before but now know what to get from this "ambiance-free" restaurant. Go for the Szechuan green beans - they're amazing. Go for the Chongqing Chicken - spicy, flavourful on a bed of crunchy spinach. My wife also likes the Deluxe Mixed Vegetables with crunchy noodles. The service was very good for a chinese restaurant. The waiter was patient about explaining the various differences in the dishes. They were also very prompt about refilling water, brining tea, etc... Three good sized tasty dishes, no booze for less than 40 bucks... sweet deal. No wonder we love coming to this place. I agree with the previous poster - don't order cantonese stuff at a szechuan restaurant...
