Vij's Rangoli1488 West 11th Avenue, Vancouver
Pretty presentation but not much else

I think I was expecting Indian food, and Rangoli is more fusion than anything else. The food here is toned down and is catering to the south granville crowd. Meat was a bit tough in the curry. There is an interesting mix of mild flavors, but not my cup of tea. What disappointed me the most was the naan. WTF? I could not believe they were passing off those gluey pita looking things as naan. You can find more authentic naan at Curry Express for goodness sake! Lets end on a positive note: the mango lassi was very enjoyable.

Ok bowl of Pho
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 8:58pm [Dine in]

I really had my doubts about this place. I went just before 6'clock on a weekday. The place was empty. It looks more modern than your average pho joint. Which ironically made me question the place. There was one lady working. She was the server, cook and cashier. Yikes. Only four other people came in during the time I was there. Not a busy place. When the pho came I was pleasantly surprise. The broth was clear and flavourful, and the noodles had enough chew to them and weren't "clumpy". The beef flank was a bit tough, but the other toppings were fine. They provide bean sprouts and thai basil but no chilli pepper on the condiment plate. Spring rolls were hot and crispy but not outstanding. In terms of a bowl of pho the price was a bit pricier than other places but still comparable. The service from the lone employee was friendly, but saw less of her as the 3 other people came in. I would definitely return to try it again in order to compare it more throughroughly to other pho places.

Good xiao long bao
Submitted Wednesday, July 9, 2008 - 8:53am [Dine in]

I have been to Chens a number of times and usually go for the dim sum fare. It is consistantly very good. The xiao long bao is nicely done each time I've had them. I haven't tried the the whole menu but so far each dish has been decent. The service is typical of most asian restaurants where the focus is quality, taste and value. Very efficient, but not overly friendly. I will definately be back until I finish sampling all the dishes on the menu. TIP: not everything on the Chinese menu is on the English menu, if you dont read Chinese; just inquire.

Efficient but not worth it.

The expresso drinks and sandwiches are decent here but not worth the money. I can see the attraction if you want to grab a coffee and go as their system is efficient. Not always in the order of the line up, but efficient none the less. However, $15 for a mocha and a sandwich is a bit overpriced. The atmosphere and ambiance is more like a cafeteria than a coffee house; which is fine for me but for people wanting a place to hang out and linger with a drink, this is not the place.

Always friendly.

I have been to this ramen place numerous times and although I have never been disappointed in my meal I find it is inconsistant. I find the soup base sometimes is thicker, and other times thinner (I order the same base each time). When it first opened, the first few times I ate here the char sui was as thick as your tongue, now it is only a few mm in thickness. Service is sometimes slow and other times very efficient, but always friendly. Everything still taste good however. They really need to get air conditioning in the restaurant, especially for the summer!
