Disappointing is theme of this review.
Disappointed that we paid 18% service charge to sit in plastic chairs/tables from the patio.
Disappointed that we had to remind our server that our appetizers still hadn't arrived yet.
Disappointed that a steak ask for "rare" arrived "well done & dead".
Disappointed that our table spent easily over $700 and still get nickel & dimed.
Finally: Disappointed that we didn't spend our time and money elsewhere.
Disappointment is the word to describe Griffins. It was a friends suggestion and at least we used out Entertainment coupons, otherwise I would feel even more ripped off. Dessert buffet is just a gimmick in my opinion.
The special that night was a T-Bone steak. It sounded great and so I ordered mine rare, my friend order med.-rare. My rare steak arrived and it was so tough I was unable to cut it. I sent it back for another, but the waiter returned to say that another T-Bone would be just as tough, because I wanted it rare. What a bunch of BS.
I didn't want to argue and he suggested the Prime Rib. The Prime Rib was OK, but nothing great.
Very disappointed in the waiter/kitchen feeding a line to the customer about a bad cut of beef.
I will not be back.
What's with the dusty flowers and greasy floors?
Don't these owners have any pride in their restaurants?
Having customers sitting in the corner next to the take-out containers and plastic flowers is just tacky.
The $6 dishes were good. The calamari was very salty. Place was busy, but again, show some pride.
The reasoning for the Keg at Still Creek to not accept reservations is that it's too popular, too busy. All other Kegs will take reservations, but not Still Creek.
They spent big $ to build a new restaurant, but then go half-ass on the service/system for customers.
Put in a policy, if you're 10 minutes late for your reservation, you lose your spot, because we are so busy. Leave 40% of your restaurant as first come-first serve and then you can accommodate both walk-ins and reservations.
Booths and such are fine, but if you can't move tables around to meet demand, what good is a new restaurant.
We've been there 3 times, service was great, but the staff can only do so much when the infrastructure isn't flexible.
Steaks were OK, but as noted in other reviews, lots of fatty pieces, which takes up 10-20% of the steak.
We took the family to Pho's for lunch after bowling because it was convenient. We order salad rolls and a couple of large noodle soups.
Salad rolls looked decent enough, but they filled it with too much lettuce. For a 5 year old, this means lettuce explosion.
It lacked any real taste.
Large noodle soup was considered small in other restaurants. $7 for a large with barely any noodles or meat. Very disappointed with the portion size and there was not much taste.
Ice coffee was major disappointment as well. A small glass that barely held any ice and which meant the coffee was too sweet.
I do not recommend going back there no matter how convinient.
It's always good to find a favourite Chinese restaurant, but the key is to not know how they cook the food. That's the case with a lot of restaurant, otherwise you might be shockingly surprised and not in a good way.
AWK in Vancouver is a diner style restaurant, no ambiance but good food. I actually hosted a 40 person Chinese New Year 2009 dinner and everyone was very impressed with the food and the value. The servers were very nice and attentive. Food came out at a reasonable pace.
However the past couple of dinners at AWK was a bit lacking. The service was still good, but there wasn't much taste to the food. And it was quite bland. It's still good value, but our expectations will be a lot lower next time.
I've been to this place a few times with my friend. He introduced me to the Black Cod box set. The one time we sat at the bar facing the BBQ, we watched how they cooked the Black Cod. We've always enjoyed it, but were disappointed (we suspect) to see them microwave the Black Cod to ensure it's cooked through. Usually if the Black Cod is BBQ thoroughly, the skin is crispy, but if it's nuked, then the skin is soggy.
It's a great flavoured dish, but because we saw how he cooked it, the "shine" was off.
I recommend not to sit at the bar unless you want to return to work smelling like BBQ. Ventilation around that area was not strong enough.
But the rest of the food is good. It's busy so reservations are recommended.
We've frequented Bao Chau for a few years now. It's where I get my Vietnamese ice coffee fix. All their noodle soup dishes are good value. Price has gone up a bit, but still good soups. They made good sandwiches also, so very disappointed when they took that off the menu.
There other noodle and rice dishes are great. Our kids love the salad rolls, spring rolls are OK-bit too oily for my liking.
They didn't spend too much on ambiance and the place could be cleaner, but I've experienced worse. Not sure why they have the TV with the fireplace looking set-up. Just a couple of small changes would make the place look better. Food and service is good, even when it's really busy.
We also order take out once in a while and it's always been good.
