Sweet Obsession Cakes & Pastries2611 West 16th Ave, Vancouver
Rude Customer Service
Submitted Tuesday, May 28, 2013 - 4:20pm [Take-out]

I've been coming here since we moved to Vancouver for the last five years and for the most part have enjoyed their baking, although the service has never been great. Today my son and I popped in quickly to buy a treat. We bought a $3.00 cookie and broke into it as soon as we left the shop. The cookie crumbled immediately and when I tasted it, it tasted stale (probably a week or so old). I went back into the store to let them know and see if we could exchange it for a fresher cookie. The individual working the counter looked at me like I was crazy, grabbed another cookie from the tray, took a bite and said "I need to speak to the pastry chef". She came back, asked me to take a piece of the cookie and asked what I thought. Seriously? I didn't want to cause a scene because I had my son with me, and I have better things to do than hold up my life for a damn cookie. Whatever happened to "I'm sorry, you have a stale cookie, let's get you a fresh one!". I left with a somewhat fresher cookie, but a really bad experience. If I'm going to buy a cookie for $3.00, I want a fresh one and a smile and decent customer service from your staff would be great too.

The worst...
Submitted Wednesday, July 18, 2012 - 7:49pm [Dine in]

There might be worst sushi joints in Vancouver, but this is the worst one I've experienced. Not only are the front-of-house staff rude, the place is dirty and the food is awful. Sure it's cheap and quick, but it's food is disgusting and the "fish" questionable. I've never seen so much crappy, unseasoned rice packed on my rolls and literally tossed into the containers. My three-year old could produce better rolls. Pay a few extra dollars and get a considerable better product and experience a few blocks in on Dunbar and West 16th at Dunbar Sushi. You'll thank me.

Great sushi spot in Kits!
Submitted Wednesday, July 18, 2012 - 6:52pm [Take-out]

You can't get better than this in our neighbourhood! We've tried every sushi joint in the Kits/Dunbar area and you can't beat the price and freshness of Dunbar Sushi. While I was waiting for our order I watched the Chef work his magic and you can tell he takes pride in what he does. The sushi was placed neatly in the containers and the rolls were rolled with love and care. The Agedashi Tofu was delicious, the fish fresh and the sushi rice well seasoned (something sadly missing in most sushi rice). We'll be back!

Fresh, perfect sushi rice and cheap!
Submitted Saturday, February 11, 2012 - 7:14pm [Dine in]

Stopped by today by accident while visiting the North Shore today and were we happy we did!
Delicious, fresh, inexpensive and FINALLY perfectly prepared sushi rice. The tempura was crisp, fresh and the dipping sauce was so flavourful I could have drank it... The portions are also extremely generous.
We'll be back!

Fast, Cheap and Tasty
Submitted Sunday, December 11, 2011 - 6:49pm [Take-out]

We live in sleepy Kitsilano and because we have a young child we rarely get to eat out. What a relief to have a really great pizza joint open in our neighbourhood!
I've had pizza from here on two occasions. The first time was a quick slice for my two-year old and judging from how quickly he consumed it - I knew this had to be good pizza.
The next time my husband picked it up and we ate it at home. The crust is chewy but crispy, the toppings are high quality and most of all, it isn't too salty. All the other joints in the neighbourhood leave me parched for hours.

Go across the street
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 6:14pm [Dine in]

We've tried to like the Eatery for the fact that they have imaginary rolls and the atmosphere is kind of fun but I think we're moving on. The last food we ate was take away and was a disaster. The rolls looked like a five-year old made them; the fillings were falling out and the slices of fish were pathetically small.

Today's dissapointment was the rice. It was some of the worst I've ever had. The kernels were so squished together it was basically "rice paste". Go across the street to Sushi Vancouver where we've found better quality sushi for 1/2 the price.

Nu1661 Granville St, Vancouver
best patio I've found ... so far
Submitted Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - 10:32am [Dine in]

We're relatively new residents of Vancouver and have been busy checking out restaurants. Living in such a beautiful city also gaurantees out-of-town visitors almost every weekend, so we find ourselves looking for great spots that showcase the beauty of our new city.
I think we found the quintessential spot! Nu patio!
Amazing ambiance, comfortable seating, bomber outdoor heaters but best of all a view of the harbour, water and granville island (without the annoying seagulls and tourists).
The food was tasty (we had the chicken wings and fresh oysters).
The bartender also made us some wicked shaken margaritas.
Our first server was warm and friendly but once things picked up we were greeted with a new server who was a bit on the cold side.
Regardless of the cold server, we enjoyed our experience at Nu.
I can't wait to try brunch!

What happened?
Submitted Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - 10:24am [Dine in]

Iki was my go-to sushi spot in my neighbourhood but the last few visits have been extremely dissapointing.
The sashimi was tough and fishy (I actually had to send an order of salmon back).
One of the reasons I ate at Iki is the brown rice option for my sushi. But come on... warm rice for your tofu fiber roll?
I don't care if the roll didn't have fish, at least make sure the rice is cold. I would have taken the white rice option had I known.
Unfortunately I won't be back.

Fresh, Tasty and inexpensive authentic Mexican
Submitted Sunday, July 13, 2008 - 9:57pm [Dine in]

I know - I rated ambiance rather high. But you get what you pay for and at least it's super clean!
We shared the pork tacos, and the chicken burrito. I also ordered the guacomole (more like a chopped avocado salad and I loved it!), and beans and rice. I also noticed a lot of spanish speaking diners and the food tastes very authentic.
In fact, the food is so tasty it's bordering on narcotic.
Everything we tasted was perfectly seasoned, and super fresh.
I can't wait to go back.

Pescatore's Seafood & Grill614 Humboldt St, Victoria
Needing facelift and lessons on how to cook lobster
Submitted Sunday, July 13, 2008 - 9:46pm [Dine in]

My husband and I were visiting Victoria for the weekend and heard Pescatores is the place in town for great seafood so we made reservations.
The dining room isn't terrible but it could use an update: fresh paint, new artwork and lighting. It feels a bit 80's.
We started with some calamari and a peanut papaya salad topped with seared ahi tuna. The calamari was tough and underseasoned. On the other hand, the tuna was perfectly cooked and super fresh.
We shared a plate of fresh oysters, which were also super fresh and delicious.
For a main entree my hubby ordered the crab cakes and I ordered the live lobster. The hubby's crab cakes were okay, although a bit on the cold side. My lobster though was a HUGE letdown. It was overcooked and rubbery. The butter served on the side was barely warm.
Looks like we'll search for a new spot for seafood on our next visit.

Probably the worst service we've experienced in Vancouver thus far. Yes they're busy but it doesn't take much to say hello or force a smile out once in awhile. We've tried to like this place because it's fast and cheap but the service is so bad it overshadows the better qualities.
