Earls4361 Kingsway, Burnaby
Allergy Aware
Submitted Monday, June 7, 2010 - 1:07am [Dine in]

a positive dining experience at the Kingsway location in Burnaby.
A group of 14 had dinner reservations on the above mentioned date.
Due to the fact that we were a large group the tables were split between 2 servers.
My husband and I informed our server of my severe food allergies to all nuts. She told us that she would let the kitchen staff know as well as advise if there was anything on the menu that was not safe for me.
Shortly thereafter, the manager appeared at the table to verify who had the allergy and to speak to my husband and I.
The manager, whose name I wish I could recall, did say that he would check the ingredient listing for the sauces etc.
I had ordered the Los Cabos chicken taco. My husband ordered fish and chips and mentioned to the sever that by extension, he could not have any nut products either.
When all the meals at the table arrived they were brought out by the 2 servers. There were people in our group that had ordered meaals which contained peanuts as well as other nuts.
Our server brought my husband and my dinner along with a few others meals on a tray which was kept seperate from the tray of plates which did have nuts, which was reassuring.
There were several quality checks during and after the meal.
Our server even asked if I had my Epi-Pen with me, which I always carry!!
I also felt I was in "good hands" being seated with 13 Nurses and a Paramedic!
As a Registered Emergency Nurse, I have encountered patients with allergies who come in with varying degrees of reactions, primarily due to accidental consumption of the allergen and/or cross contamination.
Earls is an Allergy Aware restaurant.
Dining out is always a challenge. Not every meal out is a positive experience. But when we do come across an establishment that not only understands our needs and challenges, but takes resonable precaution and just as importantly emphasizes and educate the servers, it makes for a great time out!
Next time I come to Earls, I may have to order something other than the Cabos Tacos....I found the portions very small ( 3 discs) and left a little hungry.
But the positive experience made up for it!!
