Birthday Dinner in Ruins
Submitted Tuesday, December 4, 2012 - 5:44pm [Dine in]

Seriously.... dont waste your time, money or effort....
We went last night for dinner, it was my guys birthday and Rockwell's has always been a tradition.. the one in Coquitlam has always been amazing to us. We were in Cloverdale and decided to try this one... BIG mistake.
We arrived and I noticed a strong smell of Curry coming from the kitchen, no big deal but its a steak house, not a curry shack. My guy hates curry so this was a concern. We noticed it was very cold inside, and as such we moved to a table close to the fire... much better.
As is the tradition, we looked for Prime Rib, his usual order. Nothing. Not on the menu. So we decided on the New York Steak. Sounded so good. We even upped the order and asked for sauteed mushrooms.... OH BOY!!
Steak dinner comes. I ordered mine well, not over well and not charcoal. Didnt want to complain, it was his birthday. He ordered his medium well, not raw, not blue, but cooked. His was the most undercooked steak I ve ever seen. He decided to eat it anyway, but got to the middle and the steak ended there. It was just too raw.
The mushrooms I decided to include: burnt to a crisp. When we complained, the waitress told me they were roasted. Now come on, it said sauteed, not roasted and there was absolutely no moisture in the mushrooms, they were straw like. I might not be a gourmet cook at home, but I know a burnt mushroom when I see it...I commented on the mushrooms to the waitress. She argued with me.
Seriously, she saw they were inedible, we left them on the plates. So instead of comping the mushroom fee, she argued with me and left it on the bill...... I know working in the service industry is not easy, and the customer is not always reasonable or right but seriously? Can you not see the burnt mushrooms we left on the plate..I paid the bill, over $64 for nothing, and left. NEVER EVER AGAIN.
I m trying to find the Rockwell's head office to let them know this location is completely unworthy of the name. SERIOUSLY: IF YOU WANT ROCKWELL'S GO TO COQUITLAM AND STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

Goodbye glad to see you go!
Submitted Friday, March 6, 2009 - 11:22pm [Dine in]

Taisho is permanently closing on March 21/22 of 2009. They have stopped serving the ayce portion of the menu and are now only focusing on a la carte items, with every item being 10% off.
The food is basic, and the service is extremely lacking, no refills offered, and in order to get any service whether that be being seated in the restaurant or having the order taken, the food delivered or even corrections to the order- like you forgot my miso soup- you practically have to hit the server or other staff over the head.
Nothing remarkable about this place,
and then comes the bill- let me tell you right now
please don't even ask them to remove the 15% gratuity to the bill, just tell them you don't want to add more to the bill, and that you want the ordinary total. I did this tonight when we went, and she readjusted the total without argument. She would have had a huge problem should she have fused, I know my rights and I know the law and I know how to file a complaint where it will sting.
If you ask nicely for them to remove it, and then they disagree this is grounds for a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. No business can adjust your total and add a tip without giving you the option of deciding for yourselves what you would prefer to pay.
Like some of the previous entries, I had her remove the tip and left paying the total bill only with no extras.
I am sorry the restaurant is fallen on hard times and has to close, Im sorry that the cranky people they did employ are losing their jobs and Im even sorry that they didnt practice excellent customer service skills at the best of times, but what makes me the angriest is the fact that they are screwing people out of their hard earned money by these unscrupulous acts.
I would recommend people never eat here again, but since it's not going to last long it doesnt matter but please WATCH YOUR BILL, AND TIP WHAT YOU WANT NOT WHAT THEY SEEM TO ADD!!!!!! YOUR THE CONSUMER AND YOU HAVE MORE RIGHTS THEN THEY DO WHEN IT COMES TO DECIDING THE TIP!!!

Valentine's Disaster...
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 5:19pm [Dine in]

We were staying at the hotel and were given a voucher for a dinner here for valentine's night. We made a reservation and came down for it. We were shown to a small table in the middle of the floor of the restaurant- Awkward as everyone watched us enter.
We looked over the menu- hmmm interesting food but nothing truly edible.
Since it was Valentine's night and we had a voucher they decided to try to dictate to us what they would offer... like beef tenderloin wrapped in some sort of alcohol sauce or quail stuffed with something or other... we were looking over the menu trying to decipher what two non alcohol consuming adults might try when my partner asked for a pepsi or coke to consume... we were told they didnt serve the stuff and had none in stock.. OMG!!!!!!!
I was almost in tears as we snuck away and didnt even eat there, though it would have been free. Although a nice chicken breast would have been nice they went and tampered it with un edible sauce, trying to be pretentious and yet who are they fooling? They are right near a Cactus Club and a Boston Pizza, even a Church's Chicken and a Tim Hortons. If I wanted a pretentious meal I would have gone somewhere with a view like Horizons or the Tea House. But in the middle of Burnaby, with no great view and a small restaurant? I dont think so!!!
We gave the voucher away to someone in the elevator who had tried to get a table and was told they were full.
We wont return, even if i did eat west coast cuisine with roasted bone marrow, mesculine greens and alcohol reduced sauce, this is certainly not a place that screams ambiance and a place to do it..
so where did we end up eating? Church's Chicken, and let me tell you although the place was fast, it certainly wasnt what I was hoping for. Thanks Tivoli's you wrecked my Valentine's dinner. OMG!!!!

OMG!!!
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 5:05pm [Dine in]

We went there for lunch today- a sort of after valentine's day treat after a horrific night out ( Ill review that situation later)
We were seated immediately and liked the ambiance of the restaurant we ordered our non alcoholic drinks and waited for our server to take our order. After we ordered we looked around and noticed the restaurant was practically empty, we watched the t v s over the bar and remarked at the poker being played.... We waited over a half an hour for two burgers to come.....
When they did come we noticed she had screwed up our order, I wanted SALAD BIOTCH!!! When I commented on the screw up she tried to take my plate away-- I dont think so after having waited that long for a screw up. My Partner's burger was decent so I suffered with the fries as I had already waited far too long for a burger plate. I wasnt sure how much longer I d have to wait for a salad. There was no one in the restaurant still waiting on food, our order was the only one being prepared. I watched as the manager and other servers were socializing with the cook and waited as long as tolerable for our meals.. how long does it take to make a burger?
I ordered the Bourbon BBQ Cheeseburger- there was no taste to the sauce in fact I never even noticed it there except on the side of the burger. The burger tasted like straw. Im sure Mcdonalds does better and much quicker. All I can say is it's a decent size burger but really- that long to make it when hes socializing and the biotch of a server cant even get a salad order right?
Im never going back and I m advising those of you who might be willing to try this place out or go back after a while hiatus DONT EVEN BOTHER!!!

Submitted Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - 1:07am [Dine in]

My bf and I love this place, his fav has to be the salmon sashimi and I simply enjoy the rolls, they are large
We place a large order because everyone we know has to have some when we bring it home,
The service is wonderful since they know us now, we always get exactly what we want with smiles and pleasantries.
The sashimi pieces are almost the size of fillets, so my bf cuts them down.
The rolls are delicious and the extras are great too.
We only wish they served warm food as well like gyoza and terriyaki meats
This is one of the best sushi places we ve been to, well worth the feed at a reasonable price, but the restaurant is too small and you have to take it out.
Other then that we frequent this place with regularity.

This restaurant is a family fav, has been for years and now it has new meaning for me,,, Sunday Brunch!
I love the Chicken Souvlaki platter, so much food for a decent price.
And if you like Sunday Brunch you have to try this one, there is a lot of food including seafood and my personal fav ribs!!!
Its like 16.95, i think, for all you can eat sunday brunch buffet but its well worth it.
We like to go because it gives us a chance to chat and catch up with each other, its a great way to re connect and the food and the service is excellent.
My partner had steak the other night as a meal and not on the brunch menu and he said it was done perfectly to his expectations.
We frequent this place and give it solid reviews, a well run family restaurant with great staff and great value...
cheers!

The only thing decent is the decor...
Submitted Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - 12:19am [Dine in]

I took a special friend here after we'd had a good work out at Watermania. We were craving sushi and I d heard from family friends the place was pretty good, so off we went.
Boy were we wrong....
The food servings were tiny to start with and then came the service. It was deplorable, they practically ignored us the entire time and when I had to re order something that didnt come the first time, and I saw it being delivered to other tables who had ordered it after I had I was fuming.
Finally we got up to go and as we were paying and leaving the dish finally arrived to the table, sad thing was this was something very common like chicken karaage
When we were paying and leaving I tried to explain to the manager my complete distaste in the service, and he interrupted me to take a phone call, practically screamed in chinese at the caller and then hung up on that person. I finally explained we would not be back and we wont be.
The food is far too mediocre to go back to when the service sucks, and the management and staff are far too cranky for their own good.
There are far better restaurants in Richmond that serve sushi then this joint and I d advise anyone and everyone who are contemplating a visit to quickly think again. No one needs to be abused only to have to pay for the experience and leave hungry.
We polished off some m and m 's on the way home so much for a healthy day.
Avoid!

I waited an hour to end up crying...
Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 11:47pm [Dine in]

This was by far the worst experience of my dinning experience and I have not been back. I was there a year or so ago for my birthday and well... it was so awful I left in tears and even the manager had no excuses.
We waited for over an hour for the table and ordered quickly, when the server realized we werent drinking alcohol he rolled his eyes and gave us our pop and never returned. We had someone else bring us our food, and there were no pop or breadsticks refills. Our food was cold and no one asked how we were doing, or we would have sent it back. We quickly ate what we could, my bf had parts of his meal that he couldnt eat because they were too hard and sticky.
We hurried through the meal, which we shouldnt have had to because it was an important birthday for me, and left without a tip.
When the manager got wind of he complaint that I made, with tears streaming down my face with frustration and complete disappointment he offered a gift cert for 30 bucks off another meal at a different time. He offered no apology and we didnt ever use the gift cert as I cant bare to go back there and be treated so horribly again.
Instead we have found that East Side Mario's is pretty good, as is the old spaghetti factory. In Victoria, we went to Romano's Macaroni Grill with very nice results. I have never been back to Olive Garden and I dont plan on ever going back irregardless of getting a gift cert from the manager. I hope the server was fired, as I was humiliated and extremely disaapointed. Just because I dont drink doesnt mean I am a second class citizen, I still deserve service, with warm food and a server to check in on me. STAY AWAY!!!

Decent sushi place
Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 11:37pm [Dine in]

We like this place for sushi and its the only sushi place we frequently visit. The food value is decent for all you can eat and if you know to speak up when you arent receiving what you want it still works out. Its the only sushi place I have found that serrves free beverages- water, pop, tea,- with their meals and the value is worth it. The variety is decent we really like the ribs and the cones. It is decent value for all you can eat, and we ve never had a disasterous experience. Some servers are more calculated then others and dont really care as much. But others are so sweet and sincere it makes up for the bad ones.
Good value, good variety, and decent service with a decent facility ad excellent sushi will keep me coming back time and again

We had my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary here a few years back and the food was amazing. We even had enough room to have half the restaurant and my grandfather sang to my grandmother an old family song it was very sweet
Ok the food is always decent with great flavours and variety. I love the soup here, especially the hot and sour soup. We go for the special for 2 people and get so much food for nearly 20 bucks that we have to take it home. The servers are decent to us, always there if we need anything. We tried individually ordering the plates but we found we got more of what we wanted when we ordered the specials from the table/plastic menu.
I've never had a miss here, always enjoyed it. The parking is a bit of a mess sometimes when they are busy and there often is a wait but its well worth it. The restaurant is nice looking and clean, definetely not a hole in the wall. Well worth my money on my visits.

This is a great place. The ambiance is lovely, with the new move and remodel its nice to have a relaxing place to go to. The servers have always been decent to us and the food is amazing. Theres a large selection of fresh seafood, an excellent selection of seafood and regular dishes. The dim sum selection, although small is good as well and we'd welcome a bigger selection. Its easy to see why this restaurant has been voted burnaby's fav over and over again.
We enjoy their war won ton and the seafood platter. We recently tried their tofu platter- black bean sauce and loved it. The servers are always friendly and smiling which is great when there's a wait. This place is popular so it is likely there will be a wait
Escellent value, excellent service and excellent food = winning combination.

Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

This has to be one of my fav restaurants, for a lot of reasons. Its attached to a beautiful hotel and offers amazing food deals, exceptional service and the food is amazing. The patio feeling out back which overlooks out into the hotel pool area is beautiful. Sunday brunch which looks amazing is a little pricey but as one employee offered, just have a lite meal the day before and make it worth the value.
We had the prime rib special, it was beautiful. 2 full prime rib meals any choice of an appetizer and a shared dessert for 45 bucks. Although this is a bit pricey for us commonly, the treat was well worth it. The steak was amazing, and we were pleasantly full.
The server was hilarious, with a great sense of humour and pleasant conversation. This place is so much better then the keg, more value, better atmosphere, friendly staff, full bar and ambience you just cant find anywhere else. Its a top fav of mine for an enjoyable evening out and good value.
Its also nice having a good hotel nearby incase you drink too much, or you really want a bit of a vacation in town. Its wonderful!!!

Ok here the thing with this place the food is quite good and the burgers are decent and good. Yes its a hole in the wall and yes it serves chinese and canadian foods but the burgers are good as is the chinese food. Itys almost hard to choose between the two as I know i ll always be satisfied.
Delivery service is good as well and we find the owners and servers quite friendly. Service is decent and the quality is good as well. We havent had a miss with this place yet, and like it for its speed and price.
Its another one of those small little new west mom and pop shops that are making a name for itself that are better then the mainstream crap we are being led to believe is better then the little guy. They have my support the whole way!!

Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 11:01pm [Dine in]

This restaurant needs to be completely revamped. The portions of food are too small and the servers are overworked and clearly underpaid which results in them being rude and aloof to their patrons. We went in for lunch and ordered the turkey dinner paltes, at 3 pm. We were told mashed potatos werent available until 5pm, and were given french fries instead. Seriously, who eats a turnley meal with stuffing and cranberry sauce with french fires? and whats with not serving mashed potatoes until 5pm? They are on the menu without this stipulation so COME ON!!
Not only that but the portions were so small we barely even noticed the stuffing, and the servers were arguing over who had to serve us, and we heard this. There was no manager on.... the whole establishment is garbage and we won't be back. I get the impression they are used to serving seniors and have let the standards slip a bit just because seniors arent so comfortable with complaining, but remember they are people to and although I am not one of them it is just rude to take money from them and not give them, or anyone, proper service and value for their money. Im choosing to stay away, I think it's deplorable.

I thought this place was small for the building which meant long lines and then the food wasnt that great. Steaks were decent and the lobster was good, but it wasnt outstanding. Considering the price and the fact that I can make a lot more food at home, the way I like ti better then them I wasn't overly amused.
Then came the bathroom, there were a lot of unused empty tables upstairs by the girls bathroom and I was extremely disappointed that they would leave an entire section empty only to have extremely long lines down below. Parking is attrocious.
Theres nothing overly special about this location, the food is decent as its the keg but it doesnt stand out. However, when I later did some research about the historical building its located in I found that its one of the most haunted places in B.C. Maybe they should remarket the restaurant, and just give haunted tours because other then that theres not much special here.

the best ceasar salad ever!!!
Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 10:45pm [Dine in]

This place is a bit of a hole in the wall, you have to climb up stairs and the place on the outside looks a bit like a dive. On the inside it looks a bit like a greek villa, with nothing too special or amazing about it. Its ambiance is usually quiet and intimate and the views from the window seats are generally decent.
What definetely makes this place a gem is the prices, they are decent for the amount of food you get, and the dishes are really good. The greek and italian varieties are excellent, and the service is decent as well. I was really impreseed with the ceasar salad, the homemade dressing is delicious. The chicken or veal parmigana is so much food I was unable to finish it, and my bf had no hope of helping me.
The take out and delivery options are good as well and I ve never had a miss with this restaurant, its always a hit. I'd recommend it for a smaller restaurant and a cozy feeling with great mid priced italian or greek food.

we ve been here numerous times always hoping it will improve. The White spot in new west has recently expanded its floor area, unfortunately they didnt train their employees how to expand their services.
Of the last 4 times weve been in, there has been no follow thru with drink refills, the food was cold or better yet we ordered starters that arrived with the meal, and the service staff was absent and rude when she was present. We have never received our bill in a timely manner and have always had to approach the cash desk and ask for it. We ve decided to stop tipping here until the service improves, but seriously with all the other great smaller places in New West, serving up just as good food and better service for cheaper I think White Spot seriously needs to evaluate itself or it will lose more business.

this restaurant is a true find, one that our family loves for quick bites and sizeable portions, the specials are always decent and the chinese fare is really good. The ambiance is well, nothing special but all of that goes away when the plate of chinese food, or sandwiches and burgers arrives.
The only thing I will mention is that sometimes when we go on the weekends the service is really slow and if it's your first time there, and the service is slow its likely just the fact that its a weekend because during the week they are fantastic.
The plates are so big that we cant even finish them ourselves and its always brought home. For less then ten bucks? who can beat that?
Seriously another great new west find.

We accidentally found this place and what a find it is. Yes it's not much to look at but who really cares when everything is fresh and homemade and worth much more then the other guys...
My fav is the cream of mushroom soup, i ve never had anything like it anywhere and then the tuna melt OMG its delicious
the burgers are all homemade and the fries cant be beat.. theres a lot on the menu for a burger joint, including chinese fare and breakfast.
We go into this place for a quick stop in occasionally, and its always been worth it.
The couple that run it are always nice, and i ve never waited a long time for my food, despite how busy they sometimes get.
When comparing them to Burger Haven, the only noticeable difference is the price and that burger haven has grape pop on tap, but at Burger burger you can get it in a can. In these economic hardships, why pay a lot when you can just get a lot and support a local small mom and pop shop?
