Samosa Garden Restaurant3502 Kingsway, Vancouver
What is going on?
Submitted Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 10:03pm [Dine in]

I used to go to Samosa Garden in it's hey day when you could not get a table and had to wait outside. After about 10 years, my daughter decided for her birthday that this was where we're going. So the 5 of us went and decided on the buffet. They had a nice variety but it looked like it was cooked a while ago and was sitting there, none of it was refilled except the naan. The tandoori chicken was hard and lukewarm, so did not finish eating that. The butter chicken, peas and paneer and fish curry were all just okay. The goat curry was a bit too gamey for me. The entire place was almost empty with people, yes, this was Tuesday evening, but the walls were empty as well, I think they're renovating or something, but they should tell people because it's so cafeteria feeling now. The bill came out to 70 dollars, 2 kids were discounted to 10 dollars and the rest of the adults around 14 dollars plus tax, no drinks. Overall, Jambo Grill would have been much better, much fresher. My kid is not allowed to pick a restaurant anymore.

Good food , no waiting

For some reason, this place is never busy. I know you're thinking well, then it can't be that good. I have been here twice in the last 9 months and it's been really good each time. We ordered take out the first time, a lamb curry and naan, fine, good taste, not too gamey. Second time with my husband and father. My father only eats indian food, so he knows if it's good or bad, and this was his first visit. He ordered the chicken curry spicy and that's what he got, he said it was very good. My husband and I ordered the thali, a few varieties of dishes that included a meat dish as well. We ordered butter chicken, very good. The surprise was the eggplant curry, OMG, I have never had such a delicious vegetarian curry anywhere. I told the waiter that it was fantastic and he says that it's one of the most popular dishes. We got rice, naan and papadum as well. The service was quick, friendly and we heard laughter through the restaurant with the staff and other guests. The bill came out to 30 bucks for the three of us and we had some leftover naan which we took home. No drinks, just water by the way. Next time will order just the eggplant curry and masala chai (another test to pass).

I'd rather eat the dirt from my own garden
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2012 - 9:33pm [Take-out]

After much fuss from a co-worker about sushi garden at Metrotown, my daughter and I decided to go to the Lougheed location on the way home from running errands. I walked in to a fairly crowded restaurant, tables about 1/2 to 3/4 full. I ordered california roll, tempura, miso soup and spicy salmon roll to go. They said it would be about 25 minutes. When I came back I forgot the little ticket in the car so they said they could not give me my food without it, fine. Went and got it from the car and got my food. Drove home, 5 mins drive and opened up the food at the table with my husband and daughter. Immediately, we noticed the awful fishy smell. The sushi was not cold, but kind of warmish. I think, in the restaurant, people do not notice because there are so many other cooked smells, like tempura and teriyaki that fill the air. The spicy salmon was a regular salmon roll with hot sauce poured on top, I could have done that! The tempura was okay, but of course a little soggy in the take out container. The miso was way too salty and the california roll was bland tasting. We go to Oyama regularly and compare all other sushi places to them. Once you've had really good, fresh sushi, you cannot eat this type of second or third class sushi anymore. It was like they didn't even care, not good customer service because they're far too busy thinking they have a loyal clientele. That may be fine for a while, but it will not sustain your business forever. Don't bother, and save your money. And by the way, the person at work got an earful about how bad my experience was, it will be a LONG time before I take their advice again.

Hat trick, always good
Submitted Monday, July 5, 2010 - 3:14pm [Dine in]

The first time we ordered way too much food. The miso soup is excellent, for only a buck, will fill you up. The second time, took the kids, not recommended, service and food was good, they were very patient with the kids. Third time it has become THE place my husband and I go for a quick date night. Had the red dragon roll, absolutely amazing!! Mangodise always good and spicy salmon or tuna is spicy, not just a hint, but right on the mark. 3 rolls, mixed tempura and miso soup, less than 30 bucks (including tip -we're nondrinkers) and we were out and at home before Grandma was tired of the kids. One problem? They gave our roll to the wrong table who ate it and enjoyed it, then sent our order after, which, of course we still enjoyed. Took home 4 huge pieces and ate them a couple of hours later. YUM-MMY.

Safari Snack House5121 Canada Way, Burnaby
Good but a little too busy...
Submitted Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 2:47pm [Dine in]

I love Safari snack house, but there is NEVER any parking out front, so you have to pick your times. The Beef kebabs are the best in the city, 4 for 5 bucks last I checked, and they are unbeatable. It's the only reason I go there. Other stuff is pretty good, like samosas and their sweet dishes which are on display, but the kebabs are to die for.

Could be better
Submitted Wednesday, October 21, 2009 - 12:22pm [Dine in]

I went here after hearing from people when it first opened that it was good. I tried the chicken shewarma wrap and it was totally bland! No garlic, no chilies, just chicken and bread. I've been hopping all over the city to find authentic middle eastern wraps and this is one place to avoid - you're better off at a mall food fair. Sorry.

This is our regular joint now, but we don't order by the slice, we call ahead and get a whole pizza, Spicy Beef is our favourite which includes onions, and banana peppers. For 13 bucks it's ready in 15 mins and once in a while I ask them to change one or two slices for another type, if they're not too busy and they're always accomodating. I did ask for extra sauce once and he charged me a dollar extra. The staff have been pretty constant and so the food is usually pretty good. It will last a family of four for 2 meals or more.
