Caffe Fantastico965 Kings Road, Victoria
They take their coffee seriously
Submitted Friday, April 8, 2011 - 7:37pm [Dine in]

Not the best espresso in Victoria, but damn close. The baristas at Cafe Fantastico are often seen taking top awards at local competions, so you know they've got some serious skills. Not only that, they're pleasant and never seem unhappy to sling you a cup of whatever you like. Nice airy atmosphere, and the reviewer below is right about the overpowering coffee smell. ...It's because they have a FULL SIZED ROASTER going in the back, freshly charring off their beans just before they grind them up and serve them to you. Some of the freshest coffee on the island, and a little essence in the air is a small price to pay.

Azuma Sushi615 Yates St, Victoria
Pretentious tourist trap
Submitted Friday, April 8, 2011 - 7:23pm [Dine in]

Having spent a year in Japan I know a little bit about Japanese food, and what Azuma serves up doesn't even come close to resembling proper sushi, with the fish cut far too thick for the unseasoned rice, and taking over 40 minutes to arrive even in a half-full restaurant. The staff are unfriendly; the menu is way overpriced; I don't know what the "yakisoba" dish that they serve is meant to be, but it doesn't even vaguely resemble real yakisoba... The only good thing about this restaurant is that it looks pretty and has a trendy location.

Avoid at all costs.

Alzu's On Bay811 Bay Street, Victoria
Better than Denny's
Submitted Friday, April 8, 2011 - 7:14pm [Dine in]

Perhaps not quite on par with QV, but for a 24 hour place Alzu's has got Denny's beat hands down. Cheaper, tastier, healthier food, and by far less packed with rowdy teenagers and no bus stop for homeless guys and junkies to hang out around trying to bum change at 3am. Typical family restaurant fare with nothing unexpected on the needlessly huge menu, the only disappointment being that belgian waffles seem to have recently been taken from it. Would return again for a late-night stop in.

Ali Baba Pizza2401 Millstream Rd, #109, Victoria
Bad takeout
Submitted Friday, April 8, 2011 - 7:09pm [Take-out]

I don't know what it is about this location, but it absolutely sucks compared to the other outlets. Soggy, greasy pizza, death glares from the dude behind the counter, still expensive compared to other chains... Tried to give it a chance four times, but met with dissatisfaction each time. Never again.

Might not do it without the discount
Submitted Friday, April 8, 2011 - 7:02pm [Dine in]

Hit up this place because of a Groupon deal - $10 for $20 worth of food - and I have to say that without the discount I might not be tempted to return. The staff was incredibly friendly and very attentive, almost too attentive for my taste. I expect to be asked once if the food is satisfactory and if I'd like anything more, not five times in the space of 30 minutes. However, this also meant coffee refills were prompt, which was good as we were both on the verge of falling asleep. Contrary to expectations, the atmosphere wasn't too weird or pretentious (more hippie than hipster) which was a huge plus, but the food was only passable, and the coffee wasn't anything special. I have a rule that if I can cook the dish I order better than the restaurant chef I don't return, and sadly this was the case for "The Canadian" (read: typical eggs benedict). Hollandaise was too tart, and the eggs ordered medium but came out soft anyway. I took a friend for two mains and two coffees the total was $29. I would not have been happy to pay that much for what we recieved, considering I've had better food at a similar price from MoLe just a block down the street.
Aside from the nice staff, there's not much more to this place than an average greasy spoon. Not worth it unless you also bought that Groupon.

Banana Leaf820 West Broadway, Vancouver
Best service in a long time
Submitted Monday, March 28, 2011 - 2:35pm [Dine in]

If you're looking for something a little different this is a great place to try. The staff here obviously likes their jobs and the restaurant really values the business it gets. On two seperate occasions I and all the people in line were given free appetizers because of a thirty minute delay for seating. It's rare that any restaurant is willing to do this for a mere thirty minute wait. As far as the food goes, it doesn't really compare to some of the Malaysian restaurants I've been to in Sydney Australia, but it's still a different experience from the scads of Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Pho, and Korean restaurants that Vancouver seems to have on every streetcorner. Highly recommend.

The truth about this restaurant is, until you are familiar with how to order at dim sum, you are probably going to feel like you got poor service. It's commonplace to wave and raise your voice to get a server's attention- the restaurant is going to be noisy and chaotic and the waitstaff don't have time to be personal or attentive to everyone that crowds through the door. Once you become a regular (it took me about 5 visits, once on a slow night for dinner instead of dim sum, and pretty generous tip so they'd remember me) you get welcoming smiles and even hellos when you ask for your table. My favorite waitress and waiter even try to recommend particularly good dishes for me to try when I go in to eat. The food is excellent and fresh, and I've never left disappointed. Get over your culture shock and give this place a try.
