My husband and I finally decided to try out Sui Sha Ya for the first time for lunch. We were hesitant to go due to all of the negative reviews, but based on where we live, we decided it would be good to finally try it.
Upon arrival, I waited close to 8 minutes before anyone even said anything to me. Finally after waiting, a server mumbled that it would be a 5 minute wait; which is typical of a good all you can eat sushi joint. We waited for about 10 minutes and the waiter finally motioned that a table was ready. I figured, like any restaurant, that the server would guide you to the table. Not here! I found the table myself and the server came and plopped the menu and ordering cards on the table.
This was the first sign of the bad things that were about to come...
We decided what to have, and ordered. We placed our ordering card on the edge of the table and waited...and waited...and waited. Finally our server came and grabbed it off of the table, not making eye contact, saying a word or even asking us if we wanted anything other than tea to drink. He then came with our food, slammed it on the table and walked away as quickly as possible; still not asking us if we wanted anything else. This kind of service continued as we waited for our food and when our food finally did arrive.
My husband asked for a glass of water, it never came. We asked for more napkins, they never came. We did notice however that our server was having a seemingly good day; chatting behind the counter, sipping on his drink, and not making eye contact with anyone other than the woman on the till.
During our entire 45 minute meal at Sui Sha Ya, our server did not say one word or make eye contact once. If you are looking to be treated like cattle, this is the place to go! We were not the only ones complaining about the service either. The tables all around us were having the same experience as us. I then went to pay for our meal and not once did the woman ask how it was or how my day was going. She grabbed my debit card and threw the machine back at me to pay.
My husband and I frequently eat out and NEVER leave without giving a tip; but I gave our server $0 at Sui Sha Ya. This restaurant is NOT a typical, friendly Japanese restaurant so if you are looking for mediocre sushi and to be treated like crap, go and visit Sui Sha Ya!
