I've read the reviews on here and am surprised because we've only been once but we had a great meal. I had halibut which was well prepared and really tasty, but the outstanding dish for me was the gigandes, amazing. Just wanted more and more of them. And I really enjoyed the potatoes and rice too. The service was fine, there wasn't much ambiance, but it was a Sunday night so probably not unusual. Would go back for sure!
My partner and I didn't have a good experience at Uli's. I think they were having a bad night as they had had a call from the City telling them not to use the water. We don't drink wine and are big water drinkers, and the only water they could offer was San Pellegrino which we didn't really want, and which they charged us for, despite there being no tap water available. The service was incredibly slow, (and that's coming from a Brit who usually has no problem with slow service), the house salad arrived brown and limp with sloppy green bits on the leaves, and some anaemic looking tomatoes that looked like they were days old so we sent it back. The server returned with apologies from the chef but no attempt was made to redeem the poor start. About 30 mins after ordering our main dishes arrived, barely warm. We were so hungry by this point that we didn't even think about returning them. I had ordered the halibut, which was cooked very nicely, but due to food allergies I had asked for the sauce on the side, so I was disappointed to find that the basmati rice which came with it was also coated in some sort of sauce that the server hadn't mentioned. My partner had the bison which he said was good. The mash that came with it was very tasty. We had only 2 mains and a small bottle of water and the bill was over $60. For that price I expect a lot more. I think the food here is probably usually pretty good, and the ambiance is nice, especially out on the patio with the water view, but the poor service and overall lack of efficiency really let them down.
The whole substandard experience took so long that the sun had set while we sat on the patio and so the server offered me a blanket. It also took quite some time to arrive but I have to say while I was disappointed with all other aspects of the meal, I'd give that blanket a five out of five!
Solid, tasty western style Chinese food. Friendly people, good value. We only had the Chinese dishes so I can't comment on the Vietnamese menu. I had the sauteed prawns and vegetables which was pretty good and my partner had the deep fried prawns, (really good), pork fried rice and a beef dish we can't remember the name of but it was cooked well and tasted fresh. One point to note though, I asked for mine MSG-free as I have food sensitivities and I did have an allergic reaction afterwards - I'm not totally sure what caused it, but if you are allergic I'd suggest you make sure they aren't using any MSG in the base ingredients or sauces.
New Italian restaurant on Yew which we enjoyed very much. Sitting out on the patio on a tree-lined street off the main drag is so refreshing and, going off topic for a moment, I wish more areas in Vancouver would offer this euro-style delight in the summertime. Anyway, back to the food - as a vegan and someone with food restrictions I was overjoyed with the vegetarian pasta, which somehow they managed to make mighty tasty despite it being comprised of what seemed to be only grilled veggies and garlic. My partner had spaghetti bolognese which was flavour-icious and well balanced. And you just can't beat the beach-happy atmosphere on Yew in the summertime. Overall, simple, Italian cooking (the best kind) which was really tasty and satisfying.
We will definitely go again.
