I'd have paid far more if my table and chair were clean
Submitted Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 1:15am [Dine in]

What a true disappointment to have such incredible beer, and such terrible food. The service is mediocre at best. I got up and went to the bar, grabbed a rag, and came and wiped my own table and chair with it. Our server laughed, and remarked that it was the busser's job to wipe ...

It went downhill from there

a waiter recommended it to us ...

Imagine being in a neighbourhood restaurant 6 blocks away and being told about the food and service in another local room. Because of how much I liked this waiter's style and manner, I came to Chow the very next night.

The food and service were simply 'sterling', and i was amazed at the passion our server spoke with. the food was certainly worthy of it.

My only complaint was that the restaurant was a little sparse and austere, and looked a little dingy in the early evening light.

All in all, I have found 2 new faves in the same neighbourhood thanks to a charming and well informed waiter (from a competitor's restaurant).

second time lucky; glad i went back
Submitted Sunday, March 15, 2009 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

Twice in 2 weeks, and am I ever glad that I went back.

The first time there were 4 of us, and we had a reservation. We were sat promptly (we were early), but no one seemed to want to bring us anything. Like menus. Or water. I watched the man who sat us at the table stand at the bar text messaging instead of bringing menus. No one seemed to want to talk about the menu, but a woman did remind us that they need the table back at a predetermined time. Our friends come fairly regularly, and they were sorry that a favourite staff waiter was not there that night.

There was nothing special about our first time there except the food, which was very good.

My friends all but begged us to give it a second chance, and so I did, the following week on the same night. I was shopping on Granville Street, and came back with a friend for the Caesar Salad. I think we got the waiter that my friends talk about, because our experience was welcoming, and warm.

We were just seated when he arrived with our menus, and offered to get us water while we 'settled in'
He came back and talked about the menu, and actually sold me on something different (we still had the caesar) than I had thought I would try, explained how the wine list worked in concert with the menu. It was almost completely different from the service we encountered last time. Welcoming and hospitable.

I will be back, and hope to get the same sterling service that we received on the second visit
